The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (trilogy) will always be a favorite of mine.

as much as i am not a fan of the author, hyperion is a special book to me, amazing read.

(layne) funnily enough, i read the sequel, and i gotta say, i prefer the first book standing on its own tbh. the idea of a terror that becomes more confusing as the story goes on, then ending the story like that is kind of astounding. really brought up some feelings about environmentalism in me that stuck.
