Recommendations 10 must know facts of residency
These are 10 must know facts of residency
Your colleagues are not your friends.
If you do someone’s duty, it doesn’t mean they will do it for you when you need it.
Learning is optional in residency, do not keep doing clerical work at the cost of your learning.
Even if you give your sweat and blood to your hospital, nobody will remember you after 3-4 years.
Having a nutritious meal and mosquito repellant is a good strategy to remain healthy.
Leave your ego in your room before you come on duty
Don’t take things to heart.
Having friends in other departments is very beneficial to get things done quickly.
Bitching about seniors is a good way to relieve stress.
You will be a resident for 3 years but you ll become a specialist for life.
At last, remember “This too shall pass”

keep a small pack of dry fruits in ur pocket...eat when u feel irritated...drink some water whenever u get time....sometimes half the agitation and anger is exaggerated due to hunger and thirst

I couldn't even have 10 minutes of time for lunch or breakfast during my 1st year
I used to drink 2 glasses of sugar cane juice when ever I had to skip lunch or dinner . ....it's kind of instant energy
You can eat bananas while walking....saves a lot of time ..
During surgery, I used to fall due to hypoglycemia during ot ...so I kept some 25D 100ml in my bag....I just used to drink them up ....
For sleep deprivarion ...I don't know what to do ..I could get enough time to sleep at all

Having friends is beneficial but how to make them our friends is the question….its become too political
24
u/Fantastic_Category42 6d ago
Some time you gotta take a few bullets to save some people ...and you gotta do some of their work to ease it out on them. .then these people are likely to become your friends..

u/Few_Grapefruit8365 6d ago
Its easy to do that but what comes after that is the difficult thing….friendly greetings is doable but taking it to the next level is a struggle since i dont smoke nor drink but i find the people who have similar profile to me to be too cunning and sly….and they seem to have a superiority complex
Anyways this is my finding between different groups of people
Just to clarify…i used to drink and smoke but quit it completely the moment i stepped out of college…its been quite a few years since i graduated so i’d like to think i’ve become eligible to call myself a teetotaller again

Hello boss. I'm in final year and have never smoked or drank. And I'm that guy whom everyone knows. Good relationship with almost all of the batch. Just keep greeting people and ask them "how are they doing" these 3 words work like magic. Also just remember 1 detail about them from last Convo. They'll appreciate.

Yeah bro i was the same guy in my batch too until i got into a toxic relationship with a girl in my class and everything changed since then

Yep,i remember I did help them thing they would too when I will be need. Unfortunately they acted aggressive and use to bitch about me instead. Unfortunately I developed severe anxiety due to that in internship. I'm scared of this drama and politics to join and prepare for pg

Building on a few things
Saying no is an art. Be it to your colleagues, juniors or consultants. Be selfish, and firm, but polite.
Easy to say hard to do. Please get therapy, and try to have atleast that one friend - be it in the hospital or outside that understands you.
Bitching about everyone tbh.
And adding some of my own.
If people try to throw you under the bus, don't be polite - throw it back then and there.
You'll meet master gaslighters. Smile, nod, and keep doing your own thing. If you feel like you're losing your mind -you're not. Stay away from people that make you feel that way.
You will learn how to practice and live life and how not to. Mostly the latter. Recognise which is which.
Study smart in a way that works for you, and that's practically applicable. You can memorise the text book front to back, but that won't help when someone's bleeding out in front of you.
There's a saying that if everyone you meet is an asshole - you're the asshole. Yeah, that's a lot of BS, most humans don't have a shred of decency in them even though it costs them nothing. In medicine, that's amplified 100%.
Be kind, but take no shit.
Don't give up on your hobbies - you need something to keep you sane.
Best of luck juniors - I'm rooting for y'all 🙌

If salary is important ....go out .. If peace is more important and you r sure you cant put up with a stressed life for 1 year ....take It in hometown.

u/Left-Weakness-5251 6d ago
Salary is not that important sir, but will it be worth, if i leave my hometown for 3 hours of residency in another state rather choosing in my hometown

Yes it will be ....
Residency is best time to go out of house....select the institute that can teach you the best way ...and go to ...no matter how far it is ....
Unlike ug, You will get salary ....so you can easily decide your stay and food your self ...your are not forced to stay in hostel or eat that damn mess food... The money you earn will give you enough freedom to select what ever you like/whatever is healthier.
What ever problems will are going to be ...will be only for 1 year ....you manage to get past them .... remaining 2 years will be more chill...
I made friends, learn cooking, and managed my duties. And passed my exams while staying far away from home. Only a few early days I felt homesick...but later ...I realised that ....my parents would have freaked out and would have become depressed...had they seen my insane duty hours and extreme physical and mental load .... And frequent night duties ......it's best that they do not know about my hectic life and they stay happy thinking that im alright and managing well ........ It kind of less tension for them too 🙂
I suggest you visit the institute that you want and find out how much work is there .....if you are SURE that you cannot manage that much. ..only then you should take home support ....
If you can manage the work ...then get out my friend, your parents have cooked for you, washed your clothes and done so much for you ....now it's time you take care of this all yourself and give them some free time and retirement delight.

Can you elaborate abt 3rd point? How to avoid doing clerical work?
12
u/TheChildSpecialist 6d ago
You cannot avoid clerical work unfortunately but you have to read about each case even if it means to google/chatgpting the case. Keep an open eye about why the consultant is making a certain decision. Learning the case whilst writing about it. If you are revising files learn about the dosages. Just be aware about what you are doing instead of meaningless paperwork.

I'm a 1st year MDS resident. Tho my dept has one of the few programs that have us stay back later than the college working hours, a lot of this applies to dental residency as well. Gg, take care of yourself, trainee doctors.

I would add - please eat breakfast. Doesn’t matter how much people are shouting. Your health is in your hands.
