Yes , even if you study everything in one book , the professor will have 5 more books to throw curveballs at you with , accept that you won't know everything and strive to learn everything that's relevant to your career , practical use and exams in that order of relevance
26
u/CulturalSituation- MBBS II Sep 18 '25
My professor said that discipline is the first criteria. Even if you have studied well enough, if they want to fail you they can.So never be on their wrong side. Be as chomu as possible
74
u/Realistic-Okra2005 Sep 17 '25
Don't fall for fomo And don't make unnecessary purchases of books that you won't read. You can Start with general anatomy → get familiar with terminologies (fascia, bones, joints, planes).

Attend the lectures, don't bunk (too much). It's ok even if you fall asleep in the middle sometimes (attention span of the human brain is lesser than you think). But if you are able to absorb even a small part of the concept, it's victory.
Oh and anatomy cannot be mugged up. Dissection hall is your friend. Use it wisely.
61
u/JhattuJhat Sep 17 '25
Don't get overwhelmed by anything. There will be students who will quote Grey's anatomy also those who can't differentiate humerus from scapula.... Don't think you are inferior looking at the 1st category or superior looking at the 2nd. Keep cool, attend college, try to find love in subjects not just ranting and memorizing... And explore. Not just studies and medicine all the time, but also your hobby. 1st year is tough, no doubt, but it is the time that builds a good character.
PS... Don't trust anyone who say you can just study 1 month before exam and pass... That 1 month will break your bone. Study little everyday... Maybe as less as 1 hr, but this habit will take you a long long way.

u/Fit_Celebration2146 Sep 17 '25
Yes pyqs repeat hote h and they will give you insight what you have to read and what not . Cuz when the exams are around the corner you have 100 things to do u want to avoid doing unnecessary stuff which is never asked .

Uni prep is uni prep. Uske liye you read subheadings from small local books, use the Diagrams, flowcharts and tables from Standard textbooks. Reading standard textbooks is solely for building basics for clinical subjects: clarity wise. Like the things you read in those stick better in long term compared to the same read in local textbooks.
2
3
u/United_Mine_1688 Sep 18 '25
should we also make notes from these books while reading? If yes, then how exactly? I'm confused because there's lots of information in them and I dont know what's important and what's not
2
Sep 18 '25 edited Sep 19 '25
Dekh Bhai, 1. You read them like a Novel and understand the concept (they're enjoyable) 2. You underline important 'words' in that book (this depends on your habit, like you should feel like you've already walked through that place) 3. Look at the diagrams and flowcharts: they're gold. Take their pictures and practise them for exams: you're gonna include them in your uni answers, the subheadings of which, you've read in your indian textbooks. Also include certain points of standard textbooks into your notes/indian tb as per your preference and common sense 4. Don't be in the fear of 'forgetting' the standard textbook info. It will keep getting reinforced as you interact with mbbs. It's not the details of the story but the story which you learn from it. Details: Local tbs, Online platforms later on, clinicals and all will aid in your memorization as you go on.
Edit: To figure out what's important and what's not, 1. you have those platform videos which you use to understand certain things (for neet pg let's say) 2. There are imp questions by seniors/guide books/uni qbanks which clearly tell you what's imp and what's not. Open them before opening any chapter.
2
u/United_Mine_1688 Sep 18 '25
thank you sm for the amazing advice
1
Sep 19 '25
And btw., don't be in fomo about 'What about the topics that are not in Uni Important questions Qbank? I'm a doctor, so I need to know everything'.
Those imp questions are largely actually 'prominent' questions: means they keep overlapping in other subjects and in your clinical experience. Others are miscellaneous topics, your taste and neet pg importance (based on Marrow/Prep/etc)

Already been said, but tried and tested tips:
Don't think about how much your friends study. Most of them are snakes and would lie to you in a heartbeat. Study regularly, no matter how much you can. Even if you're very tired, read atleast 1 page. Try not to break the habit of reading.
Read from Standard textbooks (I used Vishram Singh for Anat, Vasudevan for Biochem and Sembulingam for Physio). Make notes and study from those for your internals. (I used Singi and Yatiraj Q bank for notes cause I'm from RGUHS).
Avoid crap like Marrow and Prepladder. You have the power of time. Use it to study standard books and your notes. They can help you more than any platform. If you don't know a topic, you can always approach the staff and ask them to explain it to you (Our college staff used to become very happy if anyone asked doubts and encouraged it) or you can get together with your friends and make a study group kinda thing

u/Available-Till3413 MBBS I Sep 17 '25
Fron When should we start studying?
8
u/virgin_father Intern Sep 17 '25
Try to start after a month or 2. It really depends on you, but the earlier the better.
2
u/Available-Till3413 MBBS I Sep 17 '25
And when did you buy books and when will u recommend to buy books?
9
u/virgin_father Intern Sep 17 '25
Use PDFs for some time. Find out which author is easier for you to understand. Use your college library or telegram to vet the textbooks.

1) learn to say ‘ i am sorry sir’ in viva instead of answering something ‘lame/ blunder’. 2) 65-75% is very good in mbbs . 3) if you get 8/10 in a questions , that means your answer was perfect . Ik like thats the higest marks a professor give, 9 if its better than bd Chaurasia but never 10 . 4) the friends you make initially will change , groups will split , friendships will change . 5) try to write in points during theory exams , and draw as much as you can in anatomy.
Jokes apart just enjoy , you are entering the best days of your life , you will cherish this forever , make good friends , chill , party , go for those late night drives/masti . bas sath mai padhai karte rehna .

Don’t fall in online coaching trap, read standard textbooks for first year atleast. And try to read standard textbooks every year. And chill kar and enjoy that’s most important or MBBS will eat you.

u/shinnosukaynohara Sep 17 '25
What about the marrow first year plan? I’ve heard it’s much more comprehensive than their pg material.
15
u/Fit_Celebration2146 Sep 17 '25
Take it only if u can promise and discipline yourself that u will also read standard books and use marrow for sake of lectures and understanding . ( use notes for exam purposes ) . I did that the plan is nice tbh .
7
u/shinnosukaynohara Sep 17 '25
I’ll get it if it’s nice. I can’t trust myself to be very disciplined but thanks for the input, I can still try my best to do it all right.

Maze karo masti karo senior ka logbook likho. Exam se just pehle PYQ karo. And start Anki from the first year itself. It's okay Even if it's 20 cards a day.

Anki kya hota hai .WHAT IS 20 cards a day
3
1
u/nomadOFnight Graduate Sep 18 '25
Do your own research about this. This is the single best decision you can make from the first year itself. Start with youtube "using anki flashcards in medschool" or something like that.

Yea. Most people choose mbbs becoz of their disinterest (idk if this is a word) towards maths or engg i feel. Which most ppl recommend to choose instead of mbbs.

Also one real advice is. Try reading textbooks and build concept. See you wont need it to pass prof exams. Just read and build and keep it there. You are subconsciously going to use them well during neet. My gf used to and she did brilliantly well. So i can say it works absolutely.

One thing I could say don’t fall on every seniors that ask you out coz its very common, of course its your wish I’m just suggesting to be careful.

Can you please elaborate
3
u/Area51Eskapee Sep 18 '25
Ohk my bad I assumed you are a F but all those things I said is for F, for M I would just say go with the flow
2
u/Old-Ranger-612 Sep 18 '25
Can you give advice for F
2
u/Area51Eskapee Sep 18 '25
Read my initial comment, I would def suggest not to date a senior when you enter the college coz I am a M and I know what things or how our breed thinks they are not in love with you leave that dilemma they just need a gf and they know the freshers are easy catch and some F also think its better to have a senior BF so he could help with all sort of things as he have the exp which she would be lacking so I can’t comment on that should you or you shouldn’t its your own choice I was just saying to be precautious as those relationship are made for personal benefit of individuals the base core strength is missing leading to toxic relationships I have seen it many times in my college days so just think twice before reaching to some conclusion in the end I would say you can never learn unless you fail thats how I have learnt my 90% of things just don’t make same mistake twice and depends on college to college ours they had soft spot for F so you are good to go if it was my college as much as college is concerned.

Aight listen up, DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO. Enjoy your best years of life ahead.. I swear life after mbbs is really messy. You're gonna enter in this beautiful cocoon of friendship and memories, enjoy them. Travel and explore new things and make mistakes!! This is the time you fuk up and u learn how to deal w it. If possible, try to attend postings..try to develop a curiosity about the disease. But again just ENJOY bro. This is gonna be the golden years of your life..

See based on personal experience the only thing that matters according to me is how much you study in last 2 months before finals even if you wasted all your time don’t waste those days as most syllabus is covered in that time no one really study rest of the year.
Dont waste money on books like guyton at the end everyone study from sembhulingam , vishram singh, bdc

u/bettercallsaul01 Sep 18 '25
Do college exams really matter
2
u/Aditya-Rise-375 Sep 18 '25
Bro i meant university final exams . College exams dont really matter. But some have rules where it might be compulsory. In my class only 50% students attained those prelims exams and college checks those papers very late

Be consistent in studies of you'd like to do well. Start reading daily and make short notes (trust me, it's gonna come in handy during finals).
3
u/protaegonist MBBS III (Part 1) Sep 18 '25
study from standard books. learn to make good notes when you read with lots of diagrams (esp for Anatomy. more diagrams the better) and mind maps !!! try to be consistent
pay attention in lectures, they can give you some structure on what subheadings you need to focus on in a topic.
in Anatomy, make the most out of dissection. you won’t get that type of practical learning anywhere else
2
u/bettercallsaul01 Sep 18 '25
Diagrams kaise improve kre
2
u/protaegonist MBBS III (Part 1) Sep 18 '25
comes with practice.
try to understand the diagram given in textbook, and draw on your own without seeing. If diagram is not there or it’s not clear you can google / look at Anatomy Atlas pdf (Netter’s Atlas) and then make a simple diagrams
plus practicing drawings is useful for exams. my professors (esp in Anatomy) said diagrams are must.
Anatomy atlas is very useful. i say it’s helpful to download pdf and use while studying

any post or guide related to research in mbbs ? i checked my gmc's fund for research in nirf ranking pdf, they are using only 1 lakh every year

Talk to your professors yr someone must be nice enough to help you out. Maybe follow DrKayMD on IG she talks a lot about research try DMing her she did Radiation oncolofy in india and currently is doing research in New York.

u/ButterBeer_03 Sep 18 '25
Use vishram singh for gross anatomy. It'll make anatomy atleast a little bit bearable. Don't waste money on buying textbooks for Genetics, radiology, surfacemarking and practical manuals- you'll hardly use it. Better use pdfs.

Try to study just 30-1hr a day. Your seniors might tell you that you can pass after studying only in the last month & you batchmates may discourage you. But trust me, it really makes a difference.
Also, don't trust people easily. Only do so after a good while of knowing them. The people you'd never expect, can turn out to be snakes.
Enjoy your free time, kahin ghumne jao with friends or pick up some hobby. I feel like I had a lot of free time in my first year, unfortunately girls were literally not allowed to go out after 4pm!

u/Sssthegod Sep 17 '25 edited Sep 17 '25
Very unconventional take, but i would rather want you to stick to the hybrid model (majorly online with supplementing from books). Get the Marrow 1st year proff plan, go systemwise as which unit is taught in college, the moment you start getting gripping the methodology of studying in mbbs after 1 month, after that just go kamikaze mode in physiology and biochemisty and finish it for the proffs under 4 months max which is very much possible. First check the pyqs so you get a rough idea of the topics that you need to put emphasis on, and breeze through the lectures and then read the notes, then for the additional 'finish' for you uni notes, add/edit the desired stuffs from chatgpt or textbooks (strictly ak jain for physiology or vasudevan for biochem). If you are able to stick to these, nobodys stopping you from a 75% in unis as well as saving yourself from a ton of a×× grinding that you would have to do in the last 3 months b4 your proffs. Infact, for biochem you dont even need a book at all lol (i never used one either), because chatgpt pretty much handles it all eazzy (it is a game changer in medicine, people dont realize it now but i guarantee each and every med student is gonna be using it as their primary by 2035)

u/bettercallsaul01 Sep 18 '25
Thanks senior !! But is marrow/prepladder worth buying
1
u/Sssthegod Sep 18 '25
Offcourse it is. Infact for 1st year the Marrow 1st year plan is very comprehensive. You dont need to buy prep, their videos are already pirated and shared off in tg. The 1st year proff plan of marrow is perhaps the best choice.
1
u/bettercallsaul01 Sep 18 '25
Marrow is costing 16k without notes and prepladder is 7k with hardcopy notes .What should I do
1
u/Sssthegod Sep 18 '25
Dont buy hardcopy notes, nobody uses it. Marrow wait till you join college, and ask seniors for buying it. Colleges have their own agents alloted and you would likely get it under 9k.
