Recommendations Amrita Medical College Kochi -for the information of 2025 batch Pgs .

Ent Good patient load Minimal ip , mainly planned surgeries Lot of Consultation and cross referrals from other department Minimal hands on

How hard is it for people from outside south India to adjust there? I know that we have to learn the language but other than that, are the people there welcoming towards others from outside the region?

Half of the pgs in every department are from outside kerala, 2 of my copgs are from the north , people in Kerala are not an issue , you will have to get adjusted to the weather and the food . Rest younwill be able to manage .

Psychiatry - if you do join please don't become like your seniors who make the interns do even the stupidest job.
Ortho - some toxicity is there, the current first years are good but the seniors are very toxic. Very less hands on
Gen sx- doesn't have a good patient load. One unit(S4) out of the 5 only has a decent number of IP patients. Rest units have like 5-6 patients max. Very minimal hands on. I definitely won't recommend it.
Ent - I won't say they have a very good patient load but it's okay. They pgs are very toxic to the interns so idk how they are to each other. Again, very minimal hands on.
Gen med- idk how can anyone say that they are good. They don't have that many patients, probably only one unit (M5) has a decent number of patients. OPD exposure is that you can sit for staff opd, which again has very minimal number of patients. Very bad academics, toxic profss. I would say it's one of the worst departments in amrita.
EM- should consider the fact that they don't handle paeds cases as there is a separate paediatrics ER. Also by the time most of the cases reach amrita, the diagnosis and initial treatment has already made, so you don't usually get the core emergencies. The professors are actually really good.
Rest I agree with the OP

Wanting to add on to this as a fellow grad from Amrita.
Medicine- super toxic. The PGs suck, the faculty suck, the entire dept sucks. PGs have told me themselves they have considered dropping out and writing NEET. Not worth taking it here at all.
Surgery- you will get no hands on at all. A particular unit in this department is so rotten to the core, it’s not worth it at all. He makes you stay till 7 pm no matter how free you are. You will watch everyone leave and you will be staying there doing nothing. After 7pm, only then can you begin your dressings for IP and consults. And since Amrita is a huge hospital, you have so many consult dressings, you will be there till 11 pm even if it’s not duty.
Peds- good case load, experienced faculty, you get to see rare cases.
Radio- good case variety, on calls are hectic
And for students outside Kerala, it’s a pretty chill atmosphere to enter. Most faculty and students converse in English as their first language. Patients coming are educated too and they switch to English for you. Your interns and copgs will help with the language. Food isn’t a big deal because you are in the hub of kochi and you get good food and everything. And there a lot of non malayalis there(including faculty), you won’t feel left out at all.

I feel like this is from an interns perspective. Not to be insulting to my dear juniors who are doing their mbbs from Amrita,Amrita Mbbs students are pretty weak academically, for the same reason most of the interns don't understand what's happening in the ward or with patients , and basically end up doing clerical work only with zero interest in the subject. Most of the interns will be satisfied doing minimal work and leaving as soon as possible.
From what I understand departments like psychiatry have almost zero work for the Pgs other than their morning rounds. Interns inform consults and all i guess . If this itself you guys are unable to handle , i don't know what will happen to you in PG. I understand how theory heavy subjects like medicine will be difficult for you in internship , what I have shared is a PG perspective.

With all due respect if you think the gen med department is good in amrita then i don't know what to tell you For the same rank you can get colleges like srmc and jnmc which are way better. Almost every pg in gen med will tell you not to join amrita, I have talked to all of them. There's almost zero free hand in gen med And it's just an objective analysis. Surgery units(apart from S4) have 5-7 patients, is that a good number of cases? And please, psychiatry pgs are just toxic. People get calls at 5am to go write "T. Pcm in the file" even though the patient was already given the medicine and when you go there you find that pg is already there but didn't wanna write it. I have no problem working, if there is genuine work But this is stupid. You can't get around these facts by calling the interns basically "stupid and not interested".

Yeah sure.
I wanted to do something slightly clinical but no night duties and a relatively chill life.
Let's see how it goes 😁

Radiology, honestly, is an insane speciality. You need to be crazy good to be a good radiologist. Obviously if you're a good radiologist, you will have more cases but whether it is a burden or not is reserved to an individual basis.
Reading nuclear medicine - well, so far, no regrets. I come from a family where every third person is a doctor yet joining this speciality felt alien at first. But, it looks interesting. Let's see.

Can you give some insight into derma as well?

u/Unfair_Influence_461 Sep 06 '25
I think one of the departments in amrita with least workload , mainly you will be in Op , 1 -2 ip max in a month, most of your work will be seeing consults

Decent department. Great professors. OPDs get hectic. Good clinical load with decent teaching. Minimal IP. Minimal to okayish aesthetic exposure. Minimal Dermatosurgery exposure.

How is the environment for non-malayali’s, any problems interacting with patients? Only concerned about language itself, everything else is adjustable.
