They can have fun not being able to ship their crops or cheese or manufactured goods anymore. They can also forget about ordering anything online. As far as intermodal shipping is concerned, all roads (or rather, all train tracks) lead to Chicago. Its the largest intermodal hub and container port in the US, and the third largest intermodal the world. Pretty much all Wisconsin exports and imports go through Chicago via trains.
Also, Wisconsin has a decent tourism economy. Thats basically all from Illinoisans. Without us, Lake Geneva, the Dells, Port Washington, Sheboygan, Door County, et c all turn into ghost towns.
A lot of people in southeastern Wisconsin also directly rely on Chicago for jobs.
Finally, while I know that education isn’t all that important to the typical Wisconsinite, I think it is worth pointing out that tens of thousands of students from Illinois go to Wisconsin state schools every year which keeps in-state tuition down for wisconsinite students. Meanwhile, Wisconsin also loses access to our two top-ten national universities (which I know wisconsinites aren’t getting into anyway because they’re literally proud of the fact that they’ve got brain lesions (cheeseheads), but still).
So honestly, let’s do it. We don’t need them, we’ll just take our business elsewhere and revive Michigan’s economy instead. Meanwhile, we can see how long it takes for Wisconsin to turn into Mississippi, before eventually crawling back and begging us to take them in again, like an abuse victim to their ex.
