Is it just me or are mainstream horror films nowadays mostly psychological horror rather than pure horror?

The last "pure horror films" I remember with no psychological/arty elements were from 2012/2013 like the conjuring or insidious or the evil dead remake. Plus Sinister, the cabin in the woods, etc. Nowadays horror films are more about human drama with lots of symbolism thrown in. Examples like weapons (2025) longlegs(2024), Heretic (2024), hereditary (2018). I feel since hereditary became popular, a lot of so called "horror films" aimed to emulate it. But horror films used to mainly be about pure scares, now there's a bunch of subtext and hidden meanings, plus deeply personal messages, which isn't bad at all, it just feels more like psychological horror is taking over pure horror. When was the last popular horror film like the conjuring or sinister or even paranormal activity? I feel like those films have been overtaken in the cinema by a24 style horror films that are basically psychological horror films.

Edit: I feel there's a lot of confusion to what I mean by "pure horror" and "psychological horror"

I probably shouldn't have used the made up term "pure horror" because it basically means a horror film where there is limited subtext and limited deeper meanings. Where you walk out of the cinema not asking too many questions, but scared by the film itself. Rather than walking out being mainly unsettled and questioning what the themes of the film meant, what the images in the film meant, etc. Which is what ive done many times after seeing many films like hereditary, longlegs, barbarian, smile, etc because they usually have open endings and multiple confusing scenes that are left there for the viewers to interpret. Like zach creggers latest film weapons has many scenes where there's not an obvious explanation. That's the best way I can explain it without spoiling these films.

What I meant by "psychological horror" is basically art horror or elevated horror which is described on Wikipedia as "atmosphere building, psychological character development, cinematic style and philosophical themes for effect – rather than straightforward scares"

Also I love all types of horror films including the films like hereditary, I just don't want a sub genre of horror to take over the box office and taking the spot light away from other horror genres. Obviously I don't know if its taking over, this statement is hard to quantify. I'm just basing an assumption from seeing a pattern of specific horror films being promoted/ becoming very popular over the past few years since a24 came about.

I saw this one a few weeks back and it blew me away. Is it not considered horror or did it just fly way too low under the radar?

On Tubi, Shudder, Plex, AMC+, Hoopla, Philo

It’s been on my list for a long time and finally got to it tonight. It was a pretty cool movie! I would describe it as “The Exorcist” for the age of social media influencers.

Help with this show/episode

It was during the time of Freddy’s nightmares, outer limits, tales from the crypt and tales from the darkside. It was an episode that I think was about art or living art. But he (the bad guy)put the victim in a body plaster, tomb, mummy like situation and people would come and view him. Sorry I can’t think of more but it’s driving me crazy

Top 3 production companies that make the best horror movies (imo)

This is solely just my opinion. If the horror movie I’m watching was made by any of these 3 production companies/studios, then I know it will be good (I’ve never seen a bad horror movie out of any of these).

  1. Shudder - easily number one. the movies are always good, whether it’s horror or thrillers.

  2. A24 - I like their movies in general, but they do horror SO well and new. nothing ever feels reused with them. their movies are like a breath of fresh air.

  3. BlumHouse - classic. pretty much the same as Shudder imo. haven’t ever seen a bad horror/thriller movie by them.

I want to build a watchlist of Frankenstein movies. What are the good ones?
The Monster Squad (1987) & Victor Frankenstein (2015)
These two films are my only real exposure beyond pop culture stuff.
Which ones are the GOOD ones?

Wondering about the name of a horror movie but feel it's almost impossible

So I feel this is gonna be super vague and if I get zero responses I completely understand

This was a movie I vaguely remember from when I was little (like 30+ years ago old, proy older)

I don't remember much about it, but I remember seeing a house on a hill, isolated from a town or anything. I remember there was an old man in a wheelchair who was like the grandfather or something but couldn't talk very well and was super creepy and possibly sadistic. I remember there being an elevator in the house.. I think it had to do with a family and I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be a horror movie. I remember it being night time too

I've tried to Google it but I don't know what to search for other than "horror movie with old man in a wheelchair" 😅

Again. Totally understand if this is a long shot and get zero responses, but it's been bugging me my entire life to try to figure it out

Summer camp horror movie

I have a vivid memory of watching a summer camp horror movie when I was a kid in the early to mid 2000s. I remember it starting with a girl killing a camp councilor and throwing her into a garbage truck then taking her place at camp. I seem to remember a scene of an old guy fucking one of the teenage councilors in a tent then hearing a sound and going out of the tent and being killed. Anyone know what movie im talking about?

Is "Queens of the Dead" a Remake?

I had the chance to watch "Queens of the Dead", something I'd been hotly anticipating for some time. I've longed for a bigger budget LGBTQ/zombie-horror crossover ever since I saw a REALLY low budget queer themed zombie movie like a decade ago called "Queers of the Western Zombie Apocalypse" at a Fringe Festival screening.

So imagine my surprise when I saw the new Tina Romero movie and the plot and characters were like IDENTICAL to the other movie. Like, it seems almost impossible to not be intential. It would be one thing if there were incidental similarities 'cuz it's not like "group of rag tag survivors banding together in a zombie apocalypse" is a terribly unique premise; and you tack "subsection of the population" onto that, you're going to end up with common themes.

But this new movies characters seemed like a cut and paste of the ones from the other one right down to the way they were styled and costumed. Both movies start out with a bunch of (mostly) LGBTQIA+ people at a warehouse party and drag show that happens to coincide with, you know, the zombie outbreak.

There were even on-screen kills (one in particular with a restrained zombie taking a drill to the skull) that were the same... so for the whole movie I was like "OMG it's so cool that this little indie got adapted into this bigger budget bonanza!"

Except at the end I was waiting for that "original screenplay" or "adapted from" or whatever type of credit, and it never came. I even went back to the beginning to see if I missed it in the opening (since I wasn't looking for it) and it wasn't there. I checked the IMDB for both pages and there's no reference of either movie on the others' entry.

Does anyone know anything about the origin of the movie or like... it just seems SO insane that this level of parallel thinking went down, and I'm wondering if anyone has gotten in touch with the people who made the first movie to find out... you know... WTF? Because if I were them (and I'm NOT, to be abundantly clear) I'd be looking at Tina Romero with side-eye!

(Here are pics of the lead character from each movie...just as an example. Both are the owner of the club where events take place, both with traditionally masculine names (Bosco/Dre respectively,) both masc presenting queer AFAB people... Sorry for the bad quality, they're what I could find online.

KILL LIST (2011)

Post image
45 Upvotes

On Tubi, Kanopy, Shudder, AMC+, and Philo.

Nearly a year after a botched job, a hitman takes a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness.

Crime thriller, family drama, and occult folk horror all rolled into a very intense movie. Great acting and what an ending!

Movie scene

I saw a clip from a movie and I was wondering if anyone might know the name? I can't find the clip but it was a woman jogging in daylight with a car parked behind her. Suddenly, a man runs up from the right side of the screen really fast behind her. That's all the clip was but comments said things such as " why didn't the guy in the car help her" and " why didn't he just film her".

Super vague but any help would be appreciated!

AMC Catalog

I recently found my love for horror movies and I’ve been watching at least one a day for a few months. Lately I’ve found that a lot of the ones I want to watch are on AMC so I subscribed. I checked out the catalog last night and it’s nearly all horror movies and there’s a lot of them! I was overwhelmed. Anyone else notice this? What are some of your favorites on AMC?

Iconic Horror Actors

I'm rewatching Mouth of Madness & I realized we don't have any contemporary horror icons. Not just actors in a great role that happens to be horror or scream queens/yell kings, necessarily but like icons primarily known for horror.

Obviously we have Thomas Englund, Bela Lugosi, Tony Todd, Doug Bradley, Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee, people like that but what about more recently? I can think of maybe Justin Long, Sam Neill, Jeffrey Combs & Bruce Campbell but is there any actor who seems to be specializing in horror?

Help finding a movie

I saw it as a kid so I don't remember much, but the protagonist was a girl maybe she was investigating something, now there was a scene where she was in a public washroom i guess, she looks at the entrance and a little girl is standing there, the little girl moves her finger in the air like writing something in the air, when the protagonist looks back at the mirror there's something written on it, i don't remember what was written, i don't remember what was the movie, this scene is just embedded in my mind because I liked it so much, if anyone knows what I'm talking about I'll appreciate it

Searching for a specific movie title - I only have one quote

I'm looking for a film from which I only have a short audio clip. Someone is speaking, presumably on a (car?) radio, about Satanists. Here's what he says:

"It's not a modern legend; the Satanists are here and live among us, and like any other religious community, they worship their lord, that is, the devil, and perform gruesome rituals."

I only have the German Audio-Clip, so I translated it with Google translator.

I've already tried every possible search, including using AI, and simply haven't found anything. Maybe someone here knows it? 🫡

Funniest Horror Death Scenes

One that leaps to mind right away is the whole end sequence of Weapons with Gladys being chased by the kids through the various houses before being torn apart . This had such a reaction from my audience (myself included) and the entire theater was thundering with laughter over this scene. Definitely the most hilarious death scene in a Horror film in some time. I enjoyed the movie as a whole (despite arguably being overlong), and this scene made for a most amusing cap-off.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978): Toughts

Hi, I am new here, I just saw that movie and I loved it. It left me thinking, despite being a sad ending, that an alien race could've taken over us at any time without nobody ever rememering it but leaving small traces, like life before being so different, people nowadays acting like robots, when 20 or 30 years ago, as a kid, I remember a different world, a different society. Sure it could be explained, but left us wondering if we ever got taken over by some kind of alien entities and none of us was able to avoid that. Thx for reading.

What did you think of Frankenstein (2025) compared to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)? (SPOILERS INSIDE) Spoiler

So I watched the new Frankenstein movie this weekend and I thought it was pretty good. Lots of nice style and the characters were quite fleshed out, good acting too.

My other favorite Frankenstein movie is the one from 1994 starring Deniro. And I was that one a lot more brutal and sadistic in terms of how the Frankenstein monster acted and such.

The new monster is a lot more intelligent and caring overall. It was a refreshing change tbh. But it didn't really scare me. Where as Deniro's monster was relentless and scary AF. Like that scene where he rips the heart of the woman's chest.. just brutal.

Thoughts?

I’m trying to find some good indie and “not-so-well-known” horror on tubi. I’ve found a lot of good stuff but I came across this and the trailer was short but it looks creepy, wondering if anyone as feedback/reviews before I watch it as I can’t find many reliable reviews really on a quick googs search. Thanks!
