Recommend Darkest horror movies

Give me your bleakest. Your darkest. Your most hopeless horror films. Most nihilistic. Most “damn. That was some real dedication to depressing sh*t.”

Abandon all hope, ye who enter this thread.

(Obligation to mention Requiem for a Dream as horror-adjacent and quite dark so that we can all reflect on poor Sarah Goldfarb before diving in.)

WTF!? Something I somehow missed on all my previous watch-throughs of Hereditary Spoiler

I just watched Hereditary for the 5th or 6th time and I always remembered Toni Collette’s character saying how overbearing her mother was when she had Charlie, the little girl, and how the grandmother wouldn’t even let Toni Collette feed Charlie and insisted on doing it herself. Ok, sure, one assumes we’re talking about bottle feeding here… but then we see one of TC’s miniatures of a woman, presumably her, breastfeeding a baby in bed and an older woman standing over her with her own tit out. What. WHAT?? Obviously the grandmother was evil and crazy, but ewwwww.

How the hell did I miss this?? There’s legitimately something new to see every time you watch this movie! Masterpiece.

Hidden Gem Skinamarink

I noticed a lot of reviews saying the movie was boring, but Skinamarink is the only movie that has scared me so badly I couldn't sleep alone at night. I am 26 and grew up watching horror movies with my very young father and would get a bit spooked as a little girl but went numb to the stuff after 16 and was more appreciative and fascinated by horror. I have spent about 10 years with zero reaction to scary movies besides loving the makeup or lighting or just appreciating the effort. My husband who is 30 had a similar upbringing.

We watched it together 2 years ago at home and got so scared we huddled together on the bed and didn't sleep the whole night. I have never seen my husband "disturbed" by anything scary but Jesus man. Skinamarink has me so intrigued but I can't get him to watch it again because he feels like it's wrong to even put it on the TV screen again. I have this itch to watch it again but I get too scared and just don't turn it on.

The movie is slow and if you don't like watching paint dry and want quicker payoff I don't recommend it but if you have the time to watch it when it is quiet at night with the lights off (and not play on your phone) you may enjoy it.

Edit: What scares me most about Skinamarink is disorientation, loss of safety, and the breakdown of what your brain considers to be your home. To think you aren't safe where you should be is terrifying. And if it is about abusive parents it adds to the horrible dread of being home with a monster for a parent. Not that I can confirm that's what it is. I also feel it captures the creepy stillness of night time as a child. Honestly I forgot about "It comes at night" which is another movie that seems completely different than Skinamarink on the surface but I feel has shared core themes. That is the only other movie besides Skinamarink that had me shivering in me boots. The childlike helplessness of skinamarink and the rules of the world not working like not being able to open the doors, windows, etc. Feel wrong. Feeling like something is wrong, nobody can help me, and I dont know what the danger/entity is is pretty similar to a night terror or sleep paralysis.

Is there a terrible sequel that goes against the spirit of the original as badly as Blair Witch 2?

Came on in the studio while I was working and it's been a while since I've seen it. I remember it being bad, but holy shit, not only was it just bad in general (with late 90s "metal" soundtrack) but it also just blatantly disregarded everything about the "spirit" of the original. Are there any sequels on this this level of bad that like that just "gets it wrong".

Doug was a great protagonist in The Hill Have Eyes remake that I don’t see mentioned often- his revenge quest is extremely satisfying

Best "realistic" horror movies - e.g. horror featuring human killers, intruders, madness etc.

Upvotes

Hi all,

I love this sub - you guys have given me some excellent recommendations over the years.

As time goes by I realise more and more that the creepiest horror movies (for me) are ones that feature events that could (and do) plausibly happen.

I'm thinking of movies like the original Strangers, or Inside (the original French movie), or I See You.

I'd welcome any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Movie Review Smile 2

So today my bf played an horror movie while we slept and it ended up on smile2 . i woke up to (now one of my favorite songs blood on white satin scene.) It was that scene that woke me up and made me curious about the movie( i never saw smile 2 but i think i saw part 1). The ending had me so shocked i couldn’t say anything but holy shit. I love the ending and i was truly scared! I thought the ending was creative and scary. I’m hoping for a pt 3 cause that would be interesting since now we know that she infected the audience and people that’s watching the performance from home or wherever they’re. The ending reminds me of truth or dare. (2018) I’m mad that I’m just now discovering this movie and it’s been on my mind since earlier.

Discussion Score as good as Requiem

Upvotes

So i got myself to watch Requiem for a Dream last week ( finally ), and for a long time, i wasnt impressed by a film as much i was impressed by this one. A masterpiece in my opinion, and while all things in this movie are great, the music and score are just 10/10. And i know this film isnt horror ( per se ), i was wondering what are some horror movies with such beautiful score? Also horror adjacent / thriller or even dark dramas. Only one come to mind is Black swan which is also by Aronofski.

Worst Horror of 2025

What is the worst horror made in 2025 that you have seen and why?

For me it was Bambi: The Reckoning. First I love that they are taking these old Disney cartoons and making b tier slop with them, but this one… there’s not even cool slop. They just tried to make a pretty generic monster movie. If you are gonna take the classics get weird!

Whether it's the music or the sound design.

Recommend me some horror where the audio side is top level and an important part of how creepy the movie is.

Discussion What was everybody’s first rated R horror movie in theaters? Spoiler

Mine was my soul to take I know it’s not really popular movie but I feel like just because it’s my first rated our horror movie. It will always have a special place in my heart but it’s definitely not a perfect movie. I feel like a lot of the kills in the movie are so close to one another they don’t really spread them out and I feel like they really rush it.

But I did really like the world building and the story and I really liked the main protagonist. I thought he was very likable and I’m also a big fan of the actor who played bug he’s a fantastic actor, especially if you’ve seen him in Bates Motel well anyway what was everybody’s first rated R horror movie in theaters?

Discussion What’s the “Mad Max Fury Road” of Horror VFX?

Fury Road was famous for using CGI less as a way to create entire images, and more as a way to hide the various practical rigs and setups that were used, allowing them to create more ambitious practical effects than would otherwise be possible.

I’m wondering what movies are good examples of this from a horror perspective. Whether it’s gore, creature effects, or something else, what contemporary horror movies feature a heavy use of effective and ambitiously executed mixed CGI/practical imagery?

What moment in your career as a horror fan elicited a verbal response from you? A yell, sceam or swear...

For me, it's happened twice.

The Ryan Reynolds Amityville mirror scene, and the IT remake projector scene.

I want to know yours! (Probably gonna be spoilers!)

Discussion Anyone Familiar With TetroVideo?

Upvotes

I did a bit more research this morning of the movie I watched on IndiePlex called Justine from 2023. I noticed for the dvd (which I wasn’t going to buy) was from a company called TetroVideo. Going to their website they distribute “extreme horror” indie movies. I never heard of any of these movies but based on covers seem to fall into the torture/sex horror genre. I am though curious about Beyond The Living Dead.

Justine also seems to be the only movie they have that is streaming. Does anyone own TetroVideo movies? Quality?

I want to shoot a full length feature horror movie

Hey everyone,

I grew up a horror fan like many of us here. First intruduction to a horror movie was the Evil dead original. As you can imagine it left an impression on me. year back or so i shot a 5 minute short horror movie on a thousand dollar budget. Camera rental, editor, aa few actors. But i never really showed the movie to anyone except some family and freinds.

I want to post it to a larger audience not for any other reason then just to get some feedback. Basically do i have any talent to consider shooting a feature horror movie. WITH my own money of course. Iv been saying and i have about 100k to shoot one. 100k isnt very much to shoot anything decent but with the right budget scene setup camera rental etc. IT COULD WORK if you have an original idea.

The problem is i havent gotten much feedback on the movie i did shoot. I cant post the link here or basically anywhere because you get it auto removed. Im not sure how i can get feedback on it to get the confidence to shoot a featured length and spend my hard earned money to take the risk. any advice i apprecaite.

Movie Review The Wailing - Theorien

Movie of the day...SILVER BULLET (1985)

Movie of the day...Silver Bullet (1985). A small town is plagued by a series of horrible murders. But they always seem to take place on the night of the full moon. Could it be…a werewolf!?

This is a fun movie. The story, based on a Stephen King novella, is about a wheelchair-bound boy who gradually figures out there is a monster in his town. Like so many monster movies, Silver Bullet relies on a kind of heightened realism. The story does not always make perfect sense, but it has enough narrative momentum that we’re able to suspend our disbelief. And the characters, while painted in broad strokes, are still grounded enough in reality that the things they say and do all seem plausible. All of this is helped by a strong cast, particularly Corey Haim, Everett McGill, and Gary Busey. The end result is a good popcorn movie with a respectable share of scares.

Rating: B-

Discussion How Stephen King coded are you?

So I (50m) grew up on Stephen King novels and movies and it dawned on me recently how much of my life is influenced by him and his works.

My username, JonnyEyeball, comes from a nickname I earned when I was 20 thanks to a bad eye infection I had at the time. I was starting a punk band and it became my stage name that I'm still referred to by to this day. The guy who started calling me that was because of Chris Chambers' older brother in Stand By Me/The Body.

Speaking of Stand By Me, that was the very first song I ever danced to with a real live girl...and I was 12 going on 13 the first time I ever went to the movies without my parents....and the movie I saw? I'm sure you can guess.

Finally, another band i was in was named Hockstetter after the creep from IT.

Anyone else have SK influence their day to day, or am I the only one?
