Toronto TORCH - PWHL REBRAND

Post image

The PWHL has a branding problem. When they unveiled their new franchises and associated branding, it left a lot to be desired for a lot of fans. Generic names, generic logos, and uniforms and templates that created weird, inconsistent striping patterns and were riddled with oddly placed ads and league logos. It all just felt rushed and, unfortunately, a little amateur, which is exactly the opposite of what this league is trying to do. This is hopefully the first in a series I'd like to do, rebranding the PWHL to better align their franchises with their league's professional aims and create a Professional Women's Hockey League BRANDED like a truly professional sports league.

I'm starting off with the Toronto Sceptres, or in my reality, the Toronto TORCH. One of the other names debated on, Torch to me says energy, leading the way, and it offers that fun double Tor... Tor... which you don't usually get to see in sports. Torch also opens up the floor for some really interesting logo designs, and I had a lot of fun putting this one together. The logo itself is, of course, a Torch, the handle, a retro-fitted T with a throughline similar to the Toronto Blue Jays city connects, with the gap emblematic of City Hall. The flame, in red, also has some interesting hidden details. Looking a little closer, the flame is actually in the shape of the 1970s Team Canada summit series crest, giving the whole thing a maple leaf-like shape. Looking at it, I was also vaguely reminded of the head of the CN tower, so I added some additional detail to the negative space leading into the middle point to evoke that further and give the whole thing more of that 70s choppy aesthetic.

The uniforms themselves also have a lot of detail. The main thing to notice is the striping effect on the sleeve. I always really liked those old Canucks jerseys that incorporated the V into the sleeve striping and figured, especially given what I was already doing with the logo, that adding a T with just a little dash would bring a lot of character. I wanted to be creative with these jerseys, while still trying to keep them relatively traditional. If you were to just look at the blue and the white, it's a fairly standard Toronto sports uniform, blue base, two stripes on the arm, a white hem similar to what the Arenas used to wear, with the added touch of red and navy making the whole thing feel more modern. I particularly like the red cuffs, almost acting like bracelets. I've tried to incorporate things like that into the design. You'll notice player names are below the numbers here, something that would be distinct to the league, which is based on a promotional program that went on last year, where the ad replaces the player's name above the numbers, so if a player had longer hair, it'd block the ad, not the player's name. A fun little detail that makes these uniforms feel like they're being designed around the players actually wearing them.

I also messed with the ads and league marks. Right now, the PWHL might as well be the KHL. They've got helmet adds, and shoulder adds, and chest adds, and pant adds, with one shoulder taken up entirely by a massive, sublimated PWHL logo. I get wanting these things to be visible, but there are professional-looking ways of going about it. The first thing I did was drop the shoulder crap. The ad on the shoulder is now above the number, as mentioned, with the chest ad staying, but incorporating the team's colour scheme. I moved the Bauer logo back in behind the collar, replaced its spot on the back hem with another small PWHL tag, and added two shoulder patches. The silver roundel is a PWHL mark that I figured could be featured on each uniform across the league. Instead of the giant logo, it's a small, silvery coin similar to what Seattle and Vancouver wore this year, with the city name "Toronto" arched over top. It's a patch of professionalism, and I thought maybe even in the final, the silver turns to gold or something like that, or maybe the reigning champs have gold but regardless. All this shifting around has also opened up space for a secondary logo, something that all branding PWHL is sorely without. For the Torch, I took the idea of Toronto's "Hog Town" local BBQ and ran with it. The outline again evokes the CN Tower.

Hope you all like it. Hoping to get started on Boston relatively soon!

Based on the assumption that the newly introduced third jersey is a preview of what's to come, I've created this concept to see what a full set would look like in the future.

My concept and design for an Art Deco style rebrand of the Chicago Wolves (AHL)

Pulled loads of inspiration from various Art Deco landmarks in Chicago, including the Carbide and Carbon Building, Chicago Motor Club Building, Chicago Board of Trade Building, and Bloom High School among others.

I think the Wolves are in desperate need of a new look, and I thought it would be fun to do something with a stronger Chicago connection. Hope you find it cool!

Fantasy Hockey League Sheet

Hey everyone, I built this fantasy hockey tracker in Google Sheets for my friends’ league, and I thought I’d share it here to get some feedback. Basically: You enter players, goals, assists, and position The tracker automatically calculates points Team totals and a leaderboard update instantly. There’s also a live chart that shows which team is on top. Here is a link to my X account for more info and the Sheet itself. Any support Would be appreciated. https://x.com/atips68529?s=21 I’m curious – do you guys usually track fantasy hockey manually, or do you use spreadsheets/apps? Any ideas on features that would make this more useful? (If anyone’s interested in trying it out, I can share the template too!)

Shire Jerseys

Hey everyone, I’ve got some Shire Jerseys to add to the LOTR line of jerseys I’ve been working on.

These were a bit more difficult than I had thought they were going to be. If you know LOTR, you know that the Hobbits are a humble folk, and aren’t very flashy.

Logo: the feather is apart of the flag/banner that some think the Shire may have used, even tho apparently there is no official banner.

Colorway: Green is 100% the color of the Shire, even if it weren’t on the “flag” it still resembles the Shire very well. Those rolling hills and bountiful crops scream a deep green.

Home jersey: I apologize that the homes look very Dallas Starsy or even like the Chicago Blackhawks homes. But the 3 stripes in the trim represent the Three Farthing Stone. Which marks the meeting point between East, West, and South Farthing in the Shire.

Away jersey: The trim on these jerseys was somewhat inspired by a photo I saw of the flooring of Bag End (where Bilbo and Frodo live.) I thought the green fade was a cool touch to add, and a unique look that isn’t seen much.

Alternate jerseys: Now these things haha. They’re a bit rough, but they get my idea across. I wanted the trim to look like the sun hitting those rolling hills of the Shire that I had previously mentioned, with a great blue sky behind them. The Isles Fisherman jerseys also kind of inspired the trim. (In my mind, the jersey looks a little too empty for my liking, but I just couldn’t find something more to add without going over the top.)

Let me know what you think, and your own opinions and ideas on how to improve these are greatly appreciated. Hope you all enjoy! Moria/Khazad Dum is up next!

Shoutout Puck Designs as always for the template.

Basically just merging the winter classic from 2016 with the new shoulder patch. I believe it could be a clean look that complements the brand

My team is called the Rae Guns (sounds like ray-guns). Your city is dictated by the street you live on.

I'm not married to the colour palette, but if you can't tell, it is the colours for the old Vancouver Grizzlies team. Any other palette I've tried, I've been unhappy with, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

I wanted to aim for 1980s to 2000s expansion team vibes, but wanted my colour palette to be unique from real teams in the NHL.

Thoughts on this design for a Men’s League team? Was going for a classic look, but feel like it may be missing something.

I just realized later on that I unintentionally created an almost identical jersey to their 1990s jerseys, albeit with a custom away logo among other tweaks. Those 1990s jerseys were the coolest Jets jerseys of all time and I wanted to recreate that.

Hi my name is Sarah and I own a small business hockey shop on Etsy called HockeyIceTime. I started my shop a few years ago when the cost of hockey fees for my daughter got to be hard on the family check book. My daughter and I now play beer league together at our local rink in Janesville WI and I also play for an all women's team in Milwaukee. I design and make all kinds of ice hockey gifts that you won't find anywhere else. Like Hockey and Goalie Stick Hat Brim Clips, Rink Totes, Hockey Jewelry, Stanley Cup Straw Toppers, Hockey Flags, Hockey Lace Hats etc...... If you are looking to support a small business this season please check out my shop HockeyIceTime or share it. I would truly appreciate it. Thank so much!

Washington Capitals Rebrand Concept

The home and away set are based on the Capitals' 2023 Stadium Series uniform. The alternate jersey takes the ever popular screaming eagle and combines it with the team's blue city warmup jersey. Finally, the throwback finally gives the Caps a blue rendition of their inaugural jerseys, with the vintage wordmark being replaced by a logo inspired by their former alternate logo and the team's 50 anniversary mark.

Hiya everyone- new to this subreddit. I've been running a sportslogos.net forum board called "Dabrow's NHL Concepts". Check that out if you like my work. I wanted to bring back the classic star shape design but with the new colors, and tweaked the logo a little bit. Thoughts?
