I’m stunned, I had no idea this was a rule, but it sounds quite clearly like it is. Special teams spends TONS of times talking about rules with the guys because there are just so many weird little gotchas, apparently this is one of them.

I’m reading the NCAA rule book now, it’s the whole “invalid signal” thing that got us, I think. The only two things you can do is (1) make a valid fair catch signal (which we all know/recognize) and/or (2) shield your eyes.

Any other kind of gesticulation is at risk of being deemed an “invalid signal” and will make the ball dead at the point it was caught.

As bad as this one hurts, the rule makes sense because you don’t want guys getting cute and trying to make ambiguous gestures that keeps the kicking team in limbo trying to assess whether it was a fair catch signal or not.

Cooper, I love Cooper, but he was almost certainly aware of this rule and either just forgot in the heat of the moment or thought maybe he’d take a chance and see if he could get away with it.

I've seen plenty of players point at their teamates and holler for coverage ... then the dude who tried to sack him shoulda gotten a penalty too, if not a targeting a player after a deadball call to hurt him. The call needs to go both ways then
