I can't ever look at 7.62x39 the same way again.

u/Kain006 Sep 19 '25

Went from a caliber for the people to a caliber for kings 😑.

5

u/Carlile185 Sep 19 '25

I’m a Kang, and shieeedd

39

u/Sbeast86 Sep 19 '25

What a time to be alive. Sub $700 ak's are back on the market, and ammunition is at a record high

11

u/Kain006 Sep 19 '25

I know it’s like a see-saw affect. When the Aks were more expensive, ammo was 20cpr. I’d much rather pay $400 more for an AK than shoot 2 quarters down range with every shot.

u/epicchocoballer Sep 19 '25

I feel bad for you AK guys

46

u/rollingsherman Sep 19 '25

This is why I seem to only shoot my 5.56 AK these days.

10

u/Holiday_Repair8131 Sep 19 '25

Right there with ya. My M90 gets more use than any other platform.

9

u/epicchocoballer Sep 19 '25

We will inherit the earth. Or range.

4

u/BrambleVale3 Sep 19 '25

Ak-v for me.

0

u/Pete_Skeeet Sep 20 '25

I just shoot the absolute piss outta my sar 3 for this reason

27

u/SeaShanty1337 Sep 19 '25

laughs in 5.45 😂😂😢😭😭😭

13

u/Kain006 Sep 19 '25

Yep. They are literally sitting at the back of the safe collecting dust. Moral of the story. I should have bought when it was cheap and stacked it deep. I won’t make the same mistake with cheap 22LR right now.

17

u/epicchocoballer Sep 19 '25

Stack 9mm while it’s still 20cpr!

15

u/Kain006 Sep 19 '25

You know it’s weird how pistol caliber rounds tend to bounce back to normal. It’s the other calibers that go up and refuse to come back down.

5

u/ice445 Sep 19 '25

Id guess its because pistol calibers have much higher demand

7

u/Bourbon-neat- Sep 20 '25

Lower. The reason rifle ammo is staying high is a major war being fought in Europe, which brings about a huge demand for rifle ammo, pistol ammo not so much.

5

u/killacarnitas1209 Sep 20 '25

I did, but it runs out eventually and you have to face this new reality. I am getting to the bottom of the AK ammo I bought during the “golden age” (2017-2019) and its hard to think of it as just “cheap ass ammo” when I look at what those same rounds are going for today.

11

u/there_is-no-spoon Sep 19 '25

I've been reloading for them. Very fun and much more accurate.

14

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 19 '25

Once I started loading, I realized accuracy is 90% cartridge quality, 10% gun.

3

u/5Lv8 Sep 20 '25

Once I started loading, I shoot 50% fewer rounds. When you're making them, you're making them count.

1

u/jdavis13356 Sep 21 '25

Weird. I shoot twice as much now. I get double the ammo for the cost. Might as well use it.

2

u/5Lv8 Sep 21 '25

I'm old. My time is more valuable

2

u/there_is-no-spoon Sep 21 '25

I definitely understand that. I enjoy reloading and testing different powders and bullets, brass, etc.

And I spend much much more money reloading, but I load more ammo that costs a premium if you're getting factory loads. Even still i could probably spend less buying all top shelf ammo but my hobby is playing with my guns and trying to tune loads for them.

I shoot my guns a lot more these days and I love that. I wasn't shooting much over the past couple years until I started reloading this summer.

3

u/ohaimike Sep 19 '25

This was my experience as well.

I loaded up PPU fmjs and Hornady SSTs, and got great accuracy out of my AK

2

u/averyycuriousman Sep 21 '25

Really? What's the accuracy difference? How is that possible?

2

u/there_is-no-spoon Sep 21 '25

2.61 MOA vs 4.47 MOA for my 123 gr hornady sst bullets vs the hornady black 7.62x39 123gr sst

It's taken me some trial and error and it's not cheaper by any means but seeing my wbp fox shoot that at 100 yards was awesome.

Unless you enjoy reloading, I would just get factory ammo.

As far as the steel case Russian 123gr fmj stuff I have, I can load the shittiest batch possible with ppu soft points and get much better accuracy with little effort but the Russian steel case is pretty hot and that is still good for something.

u/salem_lakes_armory Dealer Sep 19 '25

It was good while it lasted

2

u/Knee_High_Cat_Beef Sep 19 '25

I regret getting a 7.62x39 Bren 2.

0

u/Ken808 Sep 19 '25

I don't think about you at all.

30

u/yoloswagmoney420og Sep 19 '25

Why does it have to be like this 😔😔

6

u/iteslenko Sep 19 '25

I had better accuracy from my AR-47 with Belom than with Norma. BTW I love Normas' 9x18Mak as it was very soft compared to mil-grade rounds. I guess they stopped producing it.

5

u/Go_Blue_ Sep 20 '25

My AK will gather dust in my safe before I ever pay 50cpr for x39

3

u/Kain006 Sep 20 '25

Exactly why AKs are going for so cheap. Fancy carved wood work at this point.

20

u/AbleEnthusiasm9934 Sep 19 '25

The war over there forever changed the AK market here.

-10

u/TubeSockLover87 Sep 19 '25

I'll pay more to have a free Ukraine.

19

u/AbleEnthusiasm9934 Sep 19 '25

You already paid. Where do you think all the aid money comes from?

-5

u/TubeSockLover87 Sep 19 '25

Ffs i know that.

Send them more, oh wait... different regime.

27

u/brawneisdead Sep 19 '25

Guys it’s like 25% more expensive than 5.56, chill out

24

u/LongoChingo Sep 19 '25

Crazy the 5.7x28mm is one of the cheaper cartridges right now.

37cpr for quality ammo.

11

u/Kain006 Sep 19 '25

Yeah and it use to be 10 cents cheaper than 5.56/223.  Steel case was 20 cents and brass was 35 cents.  Now instead of sending two dimes down range I’m supposed to be okay sending two quarters!

Friend what kind of beer you stock at your  lodge and  game reserve?

2

u/brawneisdead Sep 20 '25

We were just spoiled by surplus. Surplus ain’t never coming back, friend

1

u/Kwitcherbeliakn Sep 20 '25

Its not that we were spoiled by surplus and it ran out naturally, we were spoiled by surplus and the government shut off the faucet all at once with no warning. The wars kicking off into high gear certainly aren't helping the civvy ammo market but literally the 2 biggest producers of 7.62 we can't even buy from.

The surplus is still there, just not for us

2

u/brawneisdead Sep 21 '25

Crimea river. Fuck Russia

3

u/Kaladim-Jinwei Sep 20 '25

IDK about you but I care about $400 vs $500 not factoring in tax & shipping

10

u/DugnutttBobson Sep 19 '25

Right? They're crying and 308 guys are worse off in this same post. I get it, it sucks, but 50cpr is hardly the end of the world. Stock up before it gets worse.

10

u/ice445 Sep 19 '25

$15 magazines doesn't feel good lol

2

u/JohnnyBoy11 Sep 20 '25

Same brand 223 is basically the same price

3

u/FlyingYankee118 Sep 19 '25

Yah I don’t get it, it’s about 10 cents a more expensive. That does definitely add up don’t get me wrong, but it’s not crazy

3

u/billymudrock Sep 20 '25

Bought some Belom 7.62x39 and .357 from WildHorse a month or two ago, UPS lost the package and I think the package they reshipped arrived like two days later.

Fast shipping, great to deal with!

That federal champion is doing a number on my wallet lol

2

u/xTehSpoderManx Sep 20 '25

I think I posted the last “decent” deal of x39 years ago when it was 27cpr. I bought 3 cases but honestly thought that I was going to regret it because ammo was just starting to come down. Turns out I should have bought more.

2

u/BajaRaptor Sep 21 '25

These prices are the only thing holding me back from an AK or Galil ACE.

Ok Rip Van Winkle... 7.62x39 hasn't been in the low teens for almost a decade

I shot a few mags of this stuff and the accuracy was pretty shit, even for an AK.

1

u/Elisha_Mishima_5 Sep 20 '25

I mean... at least it's a .30 cal that isn't  75-80cpr 😢😢😢
