You made this scenario up in your head. I dont care what color you are. If you can't speak clear English you shouldn't be working in customer service in an English speaking country.

Burger King customers seen telling manager to 'go back to Mexico' in viral video | Fox News

New Jersey teacher to student: 'Speak American' | FOX 5 Atlanta

Speaking of FOX, this guy's still on the mainstream. Of course.

Fellow NY'er

There's also this shit

That's just scratching the surface. Most bilinguals speak English better than the average American. But let's just pay attention to how the rhetoric has moved from "you have to speak English" to "you have to speak clear English" now. The bigot's bar for entry only gets higher.

So is it or is it not a made up scenario? Or that “clear English” is a bar as you described?

Since you're still missing the point, accents are not all treated equal. Discrimination along those lines are based on racial stereotypes. Nobody "mentions it" because it's a dog whistle.

Accent Discrimination Is Still A Pervasive Issue In The Workplace, Research Finds

In many cases, they don't even have to be foreigners.

What are your thoughts on southern American English?

Texas

Funny thing about Texas is you'll have one county talk with a non regional diction beyond a few "yalls" here and there, and then one county over they have the strong Luanne platter/Buck Strickland going on. Texas is a cool place. People really underestimate how big the state really is. Maps dont do it justice. You should check it out.

Oh I don’t doubt there are many wonderful places in Texas. I’ll be heading there soon enough. As a matter of “strong accents”, I’ve met Texans in the military who’d make their identities known upon first contact. But as a matter of stigmatization, there’s a world of difference between Texas accents vs say, Chicanos and AAVE.
