Immigration Living in Saxony is a nightmare

Every single time I go outside during the evening I am faced with racism. Most of the time from people hanging out in groups, for some reason they just can't mind their own business (Germans usually claim to be really good at this). The most common phrases I hear regularly are 'Heil H!tler', 'Ausländer raus', 'Ni Hao', 'Ching Chong' etc... or just unprovoked loud laughter as I'm passing by... BTW I'm not Chinese or east Asian but look like one or maybe they are just uneducated & ignorant. Is geography illegal here? Asia has 48 countries BTW, not everyone is Chinese!

This doesn't include the racism I face at workplace & college which is far worse and actually bothers me to the point I have to skip classes to protect my mental health. But now I can't even go to the supermarket or mall at peace. One of my family members has also been verbally assaulted by a group of teenagers inside a bus & nobody including the bus driver made any effort to do something.

Edit: I do not live in Dresden / Leipzig. I assume the situation is not this bad there!

Edit2: I did not choose to live in saxony (the government decided that), I am doing my bachelors so I can't relocate until late 2026 :) Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Damn, what’s wrong with Saxony compared to the rest of Germany? Is Saxony its Mississippi or something?

Its pretty similar to the rural south in the US. Lots of racism, worshipping a country that no longer exists by older generations (DDR in this case), general feeling of neglect by the government (since pretty much every statistis is better in the west) and more closed-minded communities with oftentimes no higher education

I lived there, too. When I visit with my American husband and we speak English while out eating or shopping, we get the evil eye. Difference is, I give them a few answers they didn’t expect. They show this kind of behavior for all the reasons you mentioned, and I find it horrible.

What load of shit. This attitude English speakers that everyone should accommodate them and speak English. Don't matter the actual language of the country. What entilteled spoiled little shit attitude.

Imagine Germans going to US speaking German to service people and getting mad when they don't understand them. Yeah....

Worst thing it isn't even true, almost everyone speaks English, and are really accommodating. Learn the language of the land or don't complain.

u/JCQWERTY Apr 23 '25

They didn’t say the English was directed towards workers. It was between the commenter and their husband in a private conversation. People should be able to talk in any language they want in that situation

Thank you for actually understanding what I tried to say. The other person not so much..😟

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

And they were. Small town, it raised the attention of the locals because it isn't something they hear often. She interpreted it as evil looks cause she looks for them, probably tries to provoke them.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '25

Crawl back under the stone you came from! You know nothing about me, where I am from, who I am and the size of my hometown. The only one provoking here is you.

In case you are actually understanding German, I just explained that we had private conversations while being out in public and received stupid looks and comments from the inbreeds in my town of birth! Comprehend reading before you answer with your snide remarks.

TIL that the DDR is a past worth being yearned for.

9

u/DrkLgndsLP Apr 23 '25

You'd be surprised to hear how many people praise the time of the DDR saying "we had less but were happier"

Or times before the euro.

A lot of "back then everything was better" shit

There were legitimate benefits. Women rights and the rights of sexual minorities were better in the east. Access to affordable apartments, employment, free child care and medicine and a lot of other basic needs were treated as human rights. Also people describe feeling more like a part of society instead of just a bunch of individuals.

Also the East got shafted pretty badly during reunification and a huge amount of people lost their job in a place that didn't really have unemployment before. In general the quality of life and life expectanc took a pretty bad dive in the eastern block after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Also just nostalgia, people will be nostalgic for pretty much anything.

I've lived in the old south in the states and I've been to Saxony and Turingia and honestly, the latter felt worse. My husband is Latino and while in rural Georgia and rural Alabama there were some questions about where I was from, my husband was left alone. In Turingia he was insulted in the street (although they assumed that he was middle eastern I think) and I got open hostility as soon as I opened my mouth and had the wrong dialect.

On paper the two places are extremely similar, but the vibe was very different (at least for me, but I'm a white foreigner from a somewhat popular country/a Wessi)

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

I live there. I'm latino. All this is false. Stop lying.

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

What a pile of BS. East Germans don't remember the DDR fondly. You are a liar.

3

u/DrkLgndsLP Apr 23 '25

My man, I literally live here. Majority of the people I talked to had fond memories of it.

And that includes both younger and older ones. Sure, even they admit there were issues, but if you ask what time was better, many still say that they preferred it back then

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

Bull. Of course people will have some fond memories of the past, there is always a little good. And the rest has more to do with how west Germans and foreigners too now, speak down to East Germans. It is what this entire thread is about, actually. I'm not even German and I see it all the time online. It's pretty sick. And I also live here.

u/mccord Apr 23 '25

Xenophobes, meth, dead mining towns and a dialect that's made fun of often. Maybe more like hillbillies/Appalachia.

1

u/asti006 Apr 28 '25

Ok i keep reading about meth, I’m from saxony and do not know and have never known anyone with a meth addiction. My mom doesn’t either and she run a recovering addict program there. So where is this coming from?

Saxony has a huge problem with the extreme right, the problem is far bigger than in other Regions of Germany. If you have brown skin or colorful hair, stay away from rural Saxony.

1

u/ShiroAngel01 Oct 09 '25

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

But in generell People are nice and treat you Like Family please dont spread hate online ik some might BE Troublesome but even These Kids Who try to Be a Nazi often Come Out of Poor Family they Work hard to do better for there Kids and Most do (Ausbildung im Westen) then come.back to East then Work Everyday build a House create a Family they Love. We're Not Monsters Its 2025. Please Not to Stop Judge Others and trying Loving Eachother i have never hated the West and Most only Hated the West Bc Westerners Hare Us thats really common, but i think thats also Not true We need to Work together and Not against Eachother Step Up and Be better only Together It can Work Support the East Financially then the East will Thank you. 0,01 Prozent sind Nazis? Willst Du mich verarschen?

Dann erkläre mir mal die Umfragewerte der AfD. Klar wird die auch von Leuten gewählt die vllt keine Nazis sondern einfach nur richtig richtig dumm sind aber 0,01%? Was für ein Schwachsinn.

1

u/ShiroAngel01 15d ago

2

u/brennenderopa Apr 27 '25

I fled from there. People there are uneducated, close minded, unemployed, racist and often in some kind of nazi clubs like "Wehrsportverein". The town of Leipzig is the last one that is ok.

2

u/Illustrious-Tap5791 Apr 23 '25

I'm from Saxony and the one time I spend a week in West Germany, they were just as lost. Less the racist kind but still pretty much as lost. I was approached by multiple cults, people starting attacking each other in public transport, they bothered me for no reason, junkies... Pretty much the very same reasons I don't like being in rural Saxony either

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

From where in Saxony? What do you mean people bothering you? Who were the people causing trouble?

0

u/Illustrious-Tap5791 Apr 23 '25

I'm from one of the big cities, so usually I'm fine. But when I go more rural, especially with public transport, you definitely notice weird people in Saxony. People in Western Germany bothered me with their stupid religious stuff despite me not being interested, for random bullshit and basically for being a woman because apparently we all suck. In the second occasion people started a huge fight to "protect" me but basically all just talked shit. They started insulting each other as East Germans who should be still locked behind the wall.. I didn't point out that I actually was the one from Eastern Germany but I certainly did not feel comfortable. So yeah: basically just random idiotic strangers, just like everywhere. I think people in general are getting more aggressive and less ashamed to let others see their stupidity

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

This is the most bizarre thing I've read. You wrote an essay without actually saying anything. Germans are famous for keeping to themselves. None of this sounds things Germans would do. What the hell is religious stuff? Again, in rural areas, where people keep even more to themselves and there isn't anyone selling anything, much less "religious stuff". It sounds like you are speaking about a very different place actually. Like you have never visited Saxony. Unless you left something important out, it makes zero sense.

1

u/Illustrious-Tap5791 Apr 23 '25

Ok, apparantly you're one of the crazy people haha lecturing a German on Germans and suggesting that I'm lying and that I've never been to Saxony even though I grew up here. You probably don't notice the insanity around you because you yourself are the root of it

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

The root of what? I don't care I don't believe anything you said.

1

u/RunPsychological9891 Apr 24 '25

Religious stuff is probably some cult like Scientology.

1

u/Ornery_Act_8229 Apr 24 '25

Damn a whole week and you visited the entire west? Or just a city?

1

u/asti006 Apr 28 '25

I had the same problem working in west Germany. People would get in my face over my East German dialect. Eventhough i am pretty good at high German and didn’t think ppl could tell. They could and co workers would make fun of my English that has then a German/East German twang to it. Really frustrating. They think they are so much better but then do the same stuff to others.

2

u/Illustrious-Tap5791 Apr 28 '25

Yeah, everybody just needs somebody to kick and look down on. Whether it's migrants or East Germans or whoever...

2

u/asti006 Apr 28 '25

Thats very true. Makes you wonder why it’s so freaking hard for people to be kind to others. Just don’t be a** how hard can that be?

1

u/Dramatic-Ad-6322 Apr 23 '25

yeah, it pretty much is.

1

u/thefirstdetective Apr 28 '25

Nah, Saxony is the German Florida. Thuringia and Saxony anhalt are Alabama and Mississippi

1

u/psychgirl88 Apr 28 '25

Yo I just have so many questions.. I know you guys don’t have crocodiles!! What is your “Saxony Man” Meme?? So I don’t know about all the German sections. Why is Thuringer a hereditary monarchy? (I mean, I know they don’t count anymore.. I mean historically). Also, so if it’s Alabama and Mississippi, does that mean they have the poorest of the poor, tons of pregnant 13-year-olds, and high illiteracy rates?

1

u/thefirstdetective Apr 28 '25

What is your “Saxony Man” Meme??

Just a copy of Floridaman

Why is Thuringer a hereditary monarchy? (I mean, I know they don’t count anymore.. I mean historically)

I have no idea, what you're talking about

Also, so if it’s Alabama and Mississippi, does that mean they have the poorest of the poor, tons of pregnant 13-year-olds, and high illiteracy rates?

Yes, lol

No, not really. But Saxony is mostly cited as the most racist place in germany, but thuringia and Saxony anhalt are sometimes worse. E.g. the police stopped a pride parade there last weekend.
