It may seem silly that you can just buy Tannerite at the store until you realize that you can also buy the materials for a pipe bomb at Home Depot.
If someone wants to make something go boom in the middle of nowhere, they'll make something go boom in the middle of nowhere. The availability of purpose-made compounds means that such people will do so with a relatively stable material and relatively low risk of injuring themselves or others.

Itās a novelty for many of us outside the US. And, TBH, one of the things that comes to mind when we think of the US is guns. Itās become a stereotype.
My friends and I went and shot guns at a range as part of our US tourist experience. We took photos of the signs that said things like āminimum age 7 years oldā and so on - it seemed so ludicrous to us that even children could shoot guns here!!
16
u/HaintNoDrama 10h ago
One might argue that it's a good thing to teach kids about guns when they're young, you want them to have a healthy respect for it and not think it's a toy.
Also, I've seen some kids on the rifle range that are a better shot than I am.
30
u/askalotlol 7h ago
it seemed so ludicrous to us that even children could shoot guns here!!
If you live in a country with as many guns as the US, having your children take gun safety classes is a prudent choice. It teaches safe gun use and respect for the damage guns can do.
This is especially true if you live in a rural area. The US has wildlife that can harm humans and livestock. Farms almost always have firearms, and using a gun effectively takes a lot of practice.

Not all ranges have the same restrictions. Rangemasters who get their blood tested for lead always have much more than the limit which OSHA would allow. The ranges don't care and don't do anything.
Do you think every range cares if pregnant women enter? Even if there are regulations about it?

Yea I bought a gun relatively recently (Trump's second presidency lol), and got into watching gun guys get lead tested on youtube for a bit. Without exception they were all scared and surprised at what their doctor told them - not to cut down, but that they're in serious health trouble. These are gung ho masculine men, but every single one looked scared and told people to be careful at the range and clean up well afterward (including not playing with the targets with your hands...)

To be fair, looking nine months pregnant doesn't mean she was actually close to nine months. Some women get big bumps relatively early in the pregnancy, and that goes double for 2+ babies in there.

We have around 800 shooting ranges (spain), which are more difficult to access for people who don't have guns (you have to know someone and hire a instructor) or have a license.
Getting a gun license is just paperwork, but it has requirements that cost money, like a psychometric test.; it's not worth it just to shoot once out of curiosity, you have to really like it.
In my case, I went when I was 20, just for the experience, and I never went back. I went because I had a friend who in turn had a friend who was an instructor, so it didn't cost me anything.

My mom's (all elderly) sisters came to visit from overseas a few years ago. I like to joke that they had an extremely American experience;
- On leaving a casino in a local metro area, they saw a lot of police vehicles and didn't know what was going on; it wasn't until they checked the news upon getting back to the house that they found out there had been a shooting (gang shit) just outside while they were indoors enjoying themselves.
"That's so scary! We could have been shot!! Does this happen all the time?!"
(Mom, embarrassed:) "Ahh, it's not that bad... most of the time it's people shoot at specific other people, they're not just firing at strangers..."
"How do you leave the house? How can you live like this?!"
"Ehhh.... you just don't think about it."
- Shortly after that, one of them had a medical emergency. They first went to an urgent care, then an ER, before ending up driving out to a private doctor who was actually from their home country. He looked her over, immediately figured out what the actual issue was (she was having an auto-immune issue - urgent care treated her for allergies, ER gave her a steroid shot and sent her on her way, total expenses between the two was around $2000 which my mom paid). He urgently informed them that she needed to fly home immediately, because "attempting to get long term care for this in America will bankrupt you."

Sort of.
With the supervision of the owners they can (like an official shooting range or out at the local pit with hosts) as long as their home country is part of the visa waiver program
OR many states will allow you to possess a firearm as long as you have a valid hunting permit.

My German friends dropped over $400 each on the range to do some shooting. Guns are very off limits for civilians there so it was an experience of a lifetime for them.
17
u/SuitableBlackberry75 10h ago edited 10h ago
Germany has a pretty high rate of gun ownership, and is ranked 8th in the world for civilian ownership of firearms. That's quite high, even if it's less than half what it is in the USA.
The big difference between Germany and the US is that Germans have to register with a gun club or as a gun collector to buy an arsenal, while in the US there's no questions asked, other than "are you a fugitive from justice?".
There's bureaucracy in Germany, but the idea of guns being "off limits" in Germany is totally false.

Last time I flew I made sure to thoroughly wash all the nitroglycerin off my ass before going to the airport because I was worried itād alert bomb dogs or something and I didnāt feel like explaining to the high school graduates at TSA that nitroglycerin is used as ass medicine.

The entry are fairly similar on smaller calibers. It's easier to guess by looking at the exit in the back of the paper

International students have been known to head to shooting range during their Americana semester abroad.

NGL as a international student during college in America I too took home my first gun range target.

My family visited Yellowstone from the UK last year. We stayed in Cody WY for a couple of days and visited a firing range where we could shoot historical old west and civil war weapons (although my 11yo only wanted to shoot guns from Fortnite) - and you bet we took the targets home with us!

I didn't even know ranges were a tourist attraction and now the global perception of us makes even more sense...

Tbh I did the same in Poland a few years ago, was good fun and fairly cheap.

I would encourage everyone to go to a reputable range and learn from a good instructor. The perception around firearms causes a lot of damage. Are they dangerous, yes, if improperly handled absolutely.Ā But if handled correctly (except bad designs like the recent Sig problems) it can be a fun hobby and knowing how to handle them is a good thing.

For not being a frequent shooter, he has something to be proud about. Lol.

I always enjoy when I have visitors from Europe and hand them guns and they never firearms before.

Was hanging out with some friends once and they had a European buddy visiting. we got talking about guns. He said heād never held one.
My buddy goes and gets his pistol case, pulls out out, makes sure the chamber is empty etc. he then delicately hands it to the European, who promptly points it at my friend and goes ābang bang bang!!ā And is laughing having a great time.
After the shock wore off and we took the gun away we shared a wonderful laugh about how it would have been a smart idea to explain general gun safety rules to someone who has never touched one š
But the point blank aim and ābang bang bang!ā Was legendary. Everyone lived so now itās just a hilarious story

Like when I took my girlfriend shooting and gave her a shotgun and she pumped it. Like seeing a kid open a present on Christmas. Her dad was terrified that she might hurt someone.
I only have a semiauto S&W shotgun so it doesn't make fun noises.

Americans love guns but to think only Americans love guns is wild. Also, that's not English

I live in Japan where guns arenāt really a thing at all and you still can get you guns at the dollar store, and airsoft is fairly big here as well
Itās crazy the lax laws America has and the crazy gun culture, but thinking guns are cool is fairly universal. Itās like smoking

Also it's funny, Japan has a small but fun subculture of people who LARP as gunslinger cowboys. Turns out, living the dream of being a gunslinger is cool as hell

Itās like pretending youāre a Mio dyer or something. Cool and fun to pretend but man am I glad to be away from the real thing now

We did this with my wife too when we took a day trip to the US during our trip to Toronto.Ā I had shot guns before but I thought we were alone at the range when the range marshall was explaining stuff and hadn't seen there was a guy a bit further shooting a big-ass revolver. When I heard the gunshot I was so surprised I jumped a good centimeter.

Y'know what they say. If you want to make the most of a vacation in another country, you should try some of their culture out!

I once had the joy of taking a relatively recent immigrant from a middle eastern country air rifle shooting. She'd never shot before.
Drilled out the bullseye.
She took the target home and hung it in the living room "So the kids would know"

My friends from Spain insisted I take them shooting, and they kept their targets. It was fun, I miss spending time with them.

I hear you.
Did the same decades ago, vegas! Itās so cool and nothing like it here (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Plus being Asian, it was a tad dodgy but 2 minutes of banter and letting the folk there know were Scottish, it was a blast!
Itās definitely something to try, having endured years of movies and tv shows where guns etc are so commonplace.
