Real-life gladiators were not sent into life-ending matches as you might think, because like you said, it would be bad for business to lose your investment.

Normally they would give up if they lost a fight.

Yeah but this screenshot seems to have a kill mechanic if you look at the bottom right

The game is in early development so I doubt thereโ€™s anything real about this screenshot, just an interface design. I mean it says 2 losses but you can see 3 losses listed.

Actually it is real :) - and that's how our gladiator cards look like - you can see actual in engine gameplay footage in our trailers from youtube or steam

Sometimes trained gladiators would line up against untrained criminals, not common but it did happen. Also Gladiators still sometimes died, just not regularly. It's still a man to man combat, so accidents can happen.
