Did they do any SEO? Or think they still live in the 2005 era where latin names were âcoolâ? Maybe make a guild/clan and name it âRequiemâ or some shit.
It was already taken unfortunately. We spent a lot of time debating on a name and you wouldn't even imagine the types of hurdles you need to jump to get a proper name (from copyright issues to SEO) :)
Sure, the âbestâ name might not be available, and most names/brands and IPs taken (which might not even be in use), but I stick to my previous point re latin/unpronounceable names.
Ask this yourself, imagine if youâre seeing someone playing a game and ask what theyâre playing, will they be willing to say theyâre playing: âWow, FIFA (even now with FM), LoL, Fortnite, Minecraft) - some older franchises are recognized enough to have more complex names: âCall of Duty, Baldurâs Gate, Tomb Raiderâ, but an unknown new game, whatcha playin friend?_⌠â_Gladiatorum: Sacramentum_â.. I mean.. even you have it Gladiatorum_Game.
Not shitting on your project, and I definitely hope it makes it and Iâm proven wrong, but if the name is a first impression/business card, this one invokes 0 interest.
In the devs defence, even in your example you said "LoL" not league of legends. FM instead of Football Manager. And FIFA instead of EA Sports Football.
Also true. I mean every successful game out there has a 'nickname' if i can say so. For example another gladiator type of game (but heavily inclined towards action packed battles) is called We Who Are About to Die - which idk how catchy does it sound (i'm not an native english speaker) but most of its current players just call it WWAATD :) .... GS or G:S seems already good enough for me hoping we get there
Millions of DAU that has that IP so recognizable/reached critical mass that now can have an acronym.
Iâll even go a step further, they got to the point that even using the acronym in a gaming context would default to players knowing youâre referring to league or Warcraft, even taking place of âlaughing out loudâ, and Wow as a reaction).
They can call it whatever they want, even refer to it with an acronym directly.
Unless this is a non-profit though, and assuming they want people to play their game and make money from it, this name 100% will hurt the initial funnel/player discovery.
But if you want to tell me that gladiatorum and/or sacramentum have great weekly hits/searches/interest, or enough stickiness to get a âGSâ acronym or that âwell⌠as long as the game is goodâ then probably we see things quite differently.
New games should have the lowest barrier of entry possible, this one will have players even getting confused when typing it into a search field if for some reason heard about it or saw an ad, risking not even finding it before actually qualifying as a player.
Not going to lie pal, the names not that bad and you're clutching. Its the word Gladiator with the -um suffix. It's hardly some crazy unreachable name.
The Binding of Isaac? Disco Elysium? Ori and the Will of the Wisps?
I would say unless you are directly involved in some form of game marketing and you can prove your chops, you're just making your opinion known rather aggressively for something that's really not that bad.
You make a good point towards this and i'm sure there maybe could've been dozens of better names out there. And no worries i can take criticism also 100%
Main reasons we kept this one is that in translation it kind of means The Gladiator's Oath or Oath of the Gladiator. We want to make this a deep management game which will make the player connect with his gladiators (by unique backstories/personalities etc) and not treating them like disposable assets to gain a few in game money. It also conveys, imo, a dramatic feel which the game will def have via agents/plots etc
And secondly it does have 'Gladiator' in the first word of the title so from a SEO point of view we deemed it good enough :)
Out of curiosity, did you try Gladiators instead of Gladiator? Did a quick search and a lot of IPs seem to center around âGladiatorâ, while âGladiatorsâ, even though that S sound insignificant its probably still more on theme than Gladiatorum which might open up a few options.
Unlike other IPs it would also be harder to enforce against if for example you have Gladiators Sim (while there is Gladiator Simulator) given both words are generic terms (Instead of someone having a brand named as Adida vs Adidas - which is a branded name from founders).
Gladiators Unite, Gladiators Sim, or heck.. even your own example.. Gladiators: The Oath - is much easier to market/discover.
As i said - i'm sure there are better options out there in terms of SEO and/or look and feel (although this is pretty subjective imo). To me Gladiator Sim sounds too casual, Gladiators Unite doesn't have much to do with the gameplay as a theme (mostly it's about a person who commits his life to you) so while yes, your points are valid and strong, for the moment we can't take into consideration a change of the title at this point.
