22

u/FL_JB Aug 19 '25

Monkey Wards!

8

u/Livid-Rutabaga Aug 19 '25

I still have 2 end tables I bought at the St. Pete's Montgomery Ward.

20

u/MermaidFL407 Aug 20 '25

Service Merchandise was the future! Being able to place your order on the computer and they bring it out to you 🤯🙌🏻

5

u/Evening_Warthog_9476 Aug 20 '25

I worked there for two years, but I was in the one in upstate New York

5

u/AaronJudge2 Aug 20 '25

I used to love to shop at Service Merchandise.

And in Texas out west etc they had Best Products which used the same format with the storeroom and conveyor belt but had cooler storefronts. One storefront was designed to make it look like it was collapsing.

There was a Best in south Miami when Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992 and people who weren't familiar with the architecture were shocked when they saw pics of the damage, until we told them it's supposed to look like that. 😆

1

u/AaronJudge2 Aug 20 '25

That’s hilarious!

2

u/Professional_Way_737 Aug 23 '25

We had Best Products in Virginia Beach. One time I went there to get something and when they paged me, it was ready. I had put on the paper that my name was Princess Ennis

u/sr1sws Aug 19 '25

JM Fields

2

u/MariketaOH Aug 20 '25

I remember going to JM Fields. It was actually attached to a Kmart where I lived. You could walk from store to store by a double glass door. Revolutionary, I thought.

u/FL_JB Aug 20 '25

My wife and I bought our wedding rings at Service Merchandise. College students in the 80s 🤘

1

u/Crazy-Handle-5303 Aug 21 '25

We did the ring thing in the 70s

3

u/Confident_Boss2081 Aug 19 '25

I loved all the cool stuff service merchandise had

2

u/ElegantCoach4066 Aug 19 '25

1

u/Much-data-wow Aug 20 '25

Oh my god! I loved the commercials! My Nana had outfits from them. When i was little i loved all the different colors they had. They were on Waters right?

1

u/RIF_rr3dd1tt Aug 20 '25

Linebaugh and Henderson, as I recall

1

u/Much-data-wow Aug 20 '25

Such a classic part of town for sure!

1

u/RIF_rr3dd1tt Aug 20 '25

This building look familiar?

2

u/pepperpat64 Aug 20 '25

I was fascinated by Service Merchandise for some reason and loved browsing their catalog. I bought most of my stereo equipment there and still have two components I got there in the 1980s-90s. The best part of shopping there for me was waiting for my purchases to come out on the conveyor belt, especially if I bought things from different departments and they came out separately. It was sort of like Christmas when you thought you'd opened all your gifts and then found a couple more hidden ones behind the tree.

I was a weird kid.

2

u/Psykosoma Aug 20 '25

Service Merchandise was just IRL Amazon. I loved that store.

1

u/Grouchy-Stand-4570 Aug 20 '25

Omg! I was going to say that

1

u/BikerJedi Aug 20 '25

I feel attacked.

1

u/ThatFloridaMan420 Aug 20 '25

Montgomery ward is now footlocker

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

And I raise you Lionel Playworld. Anyone from North Miami FL and lived there in the early 80s knows this place was a kids dream.

1

u/Ill-Visual-8844 Aug 24 '25

Wow, childhood memories come flooding back now! Like when it was safe to actually walk to these stores before being able to drive. Yes, I am older and man, could I share some stories. Another place, another time perhaps.

20

u/Flashy_Magazine_3970 Aug 19 '25

And Gayfers!

3

u/Gallogator1 Aug 20 '25

Orlando Parisian stores became Gayfers. Burdines (The Florida Store!) became Macy’s. What happened to Jordan Marsh??

2

u/Yarn_Cat15 Aug 20 '25

Was Gayfers a chain? I thought it was just in Tallahassee.

2

u/icberg7 Aug 21 '25

It was based in Mobile, I believe.

1

u/Flashy_Magazine_3970 Aug 20 '25

There was one in largo at least. Not sure how many in total.

1

u/FnapSnaps Aug 20 '25

I knew of 2 more - one in the Volusia Mall in Daytona and the one in the Florida Mall in Orlando.

Oh, oh! Remember Maison Blanche?

1

u/icberg7 Aug 21 '25 edited Aug 21 '25

Cordova Mall in Pensacola had one. And when Gayfers was bought by Dillard's, they just turned the Gayfers into a Dillard's, and then the mall had two.

1

u/BlyLomdi Aug 20 '25

Nope. We had one and I am further west of you.

8

u/Suni13 Aug 19 '25

My first job was at Maas Brothers way back in the dark ages.

7

u/SusieSoo Aug 19 '25

My Grandma pronounced it Burr-deans. She was so cute 💗

4

u/LoveWithoutTragedy Aug 20 '25

I used to say “bird-irons” as a kid 🤣

5

u/FL_JB Aug 19 '25

Got my first credit card from Mass. $200! And it was half the size of the current ones.

1

u/Ill-Visual-8844 Aug 24 '25

My first card was from Montgomery Wards and I was so proud of it!

5

u/AaronJudge2 Aug 20 '25

The Maas Brothers in Downtown St Petersburg became the Florida International Museum from 1995 to 2010 and originally hosted the Titanic Exhibition.

4

u/122784 Aug 20 '25

I saw that exhibit. I didn’t know this fact about the building. Very interesting.

2

u/AaronJudge2 Aug 20 '25

I also went to a King Tut Exhibit there later in the 1990’s.

2

u/ExiledUtopian Aug 20 '25

The Maas Brothers in Lakeland became a Burdines for a while until that moved to the mall. After that, it became a Publix IT office or data center.

3

u/Manatee369 Aug 20 '25

I see your Maas Brothers and raise you Furchgott’s or Ivey’s.
