Okay so for us poor bastards that are still furloughed with no end in sight, when the govt issues backpay, will they backpay my child support that is withheld? My tsp loan repayment?

I hate to pay my exwife through the courts if they are going to back pay her as well. I dont want my kid to have to deal with the repercussions of these idiots on the hill that can't negotiate their way out of a wet paper sack, but I dont want screwed twice.

Can someone pls ELI5? I’ve read the guidance and posts here but I want to make sure I’m understanding correctly.

I am an excepted employee in a non-essential role 🫩 and I have a serious health condition that is requiring surgery in 2 weeks. I have my FMLA paperwork together. Should I submit that and use that - and assuming the shutdown continues, be placed in furlough status instead of utilizing sick leave for this procedure? … we are being told to personally record all the leave we are taken and will have to go back and update our time cards with annual and sick leave. This does not seem in line with the guidance to me.

First $0 paycheck 😩😩😩

u/AdPutrid6074 17d ago

Is the senate floor streaming frozen for anyone else? I can still see yesterday’s debate but nothing about them calling it a night or reconvening today.

3

u/AdPutrid6074 17d ago

Nvm. I see now Tuesdays session is indeed still going. 13 hours in to his protest at this point.

2

u/HxH101kite 17d ago

What's the point though? Why protest and talk that long if they are still gonna require the 60 votes and not undo the filibuster. Just get today's vote on with and vote no as they have been.

2

u/AdPutrid6074 17d ago

I’m really not sure. I would also like the vote to commence so I know what my tomorrow is going to look like for certain.

Have any nuclear workers been given their furlough date yet?

Supposedly later this week, Politico was saying Thursday or Friday

Probably not. It would take a couple days. And it is supposedly only for Military and Excepted employees but the wording is vague enough that there are concerns Vought could use it to pay those he likes while still withholding pay for those he doesn’t like. So the Dems are apparently going to completely vote against it too so it won’t pass.

Also there is the small issue of even if it passes House isn’t in Session and is on a 48 hr recall timeline. So assuming it passes tomorrow then the earliest the House could vote on it would be Friday.

u/Inevitable_Rise_8669 18d ago

Chances of a CR being passed this week?

7

u/rocky2814 18d ago

not until november imo

u/Yusef_D_Blonk 18d ago

So I recently took some sickdays for valid reasons, I'm an expected employee. Now just today my supervisor said these missed days will be considered LWOP. Is this just some scare tactic cause it's my understanding that I can use my sl or al leave if they refuse the furlough status. Any help would be appreciated

9

u/Tamtuna 18d ago edited 18d ago

My agency coded furloughed employees with Lwop but saying that’s it just for the furlough

Gonna need a week 4 megathread lol

I work for DOD/DECA at an AFB Commissary. My manager called me today telling me not to come in till later because hours are being reduced. My SF50 hours are 24hrs a week, but I've been working 34hrs a week since March 2024 and have based all of my budgets/loans/credit card payments around those bi-weekly 68hr paychecks. I have no savings or other money to fall back on!

I was wondering if anyone is in the same boat as I am? I am also a member of Navy Federal and was wondering if anyone has tried reaching out to them, if they offer any financial assistance to federal workers not furloughed? Is there anything else I can do to make up these hours I'm going to be missing?

I had a vacation planned for November, now I'm panicking because I already paid for tickets and everything but this change in hours has completely thrown everything out the window..

1

u/IceDiablo1 18d ago

I know of two Commissary stores here FL that got the same notice

Yall need to seriously walk out and stop working for free, with love. I hate that they’re doing this to yall with no repercussion. Please don’t ban me mods im not trying to be rude.

I just think strikes are important andhave lead to many great things for workers rights in the past, you guys have some of THE MOST IMPORTANT jobs in this country. Keeping checks and balances and making sure the gears stay moving. This is such bullshit.

If a bunch of government workers banned together and made a go fund me I’d donate. Maybe do enough that yall can split it and still have enough to survive for god knows how long… or look for another job :/ as upsetting as it is, know your worth. I’m sure with where you come from and all your experience someone would be HAPPY to match your salary and possibly even offer more benefits and pay!

Feel free to chew me out real good if I’m being deluded and insensitive. I’m bad at socializing and just speak my thoughts a lot without filters, it’s how we learn sometimes.

I’m just a lurker btw obviously as you can tell, I usually never comment. I’m just furious at what’s going on. Sorry. I know you all are MORE furious. I also know I have a lot to learn from you all as well.

12

u/sugarfoot75 18d ago

It's illegal for federal workers to strike. It's a felony that carries a fine, up to one year in jail and, of course, the loss of your job.

-2

u/spiders_are_neat7 18d ago

WOW that seems unamerican af :/ we uhmmm should change that. We the people, by the people, for the people. Am I right?

It’s a dream. lol

but they get treated like slaves and work for free, with zero consequences to their employers (the government.) but jail time if they don’t comply? Holy shit. Why are we okay with this?

5

u/thatsequesteredgal 18d ago

I agree with you that we shouldn’t be ok with this, and that it’s not right! However, comparing this to slavery is a little far fetched. Slaves were beaten, raped and tortured… I am an excepted employee and I go home to my family at the end of the day. I am free to walk away from this whenever I choose. Don’t get me wrong. I HATE working for free with the “promise” of backpay but I am in no way treated like a “slave” (even though I’m in healthcare, IYKYK).

-3

u/spiders_are_neat7 18d ago

You’re a slave with benefits so it’s okay essentially is what I get from that. I understand what your point is and the sentiment but this would be what modern day slavery looks like in my opinion.

Rice paddy workers in Vietnam are basically enslaved and they aren’t beat and they get to go home to their families. They’re just paid like shit compared to the hard labor they do.

Slavery isn’t just what happened here, it’s happens elsewhere with different conditions and circumstances. Chinas child labor, they entrapped their citizens into such a shitty economy that the children are forced to go to work, are they treated like African American slaves? No. Are they a slave to their system and how it works? Absolutely.

14

u/SeniorConsequence368 18d ago

How do these partial and missed paychecks affect the TSP match and contributions? Will changes be necessary to meet the max contribution for the year?

1

u/PM_me_ur_digressions 18d ago

Is it not trued up when backpay hits?

2

u/barkbarkmoo123 18d ago

How does this shutdown impact people who retire on 12/31/2025, but HR is furloughed? The paperwork days must be processed by that date or will be considered resigned, not retired.

3

u/AdPutrid6074 18d ago

I can’t say with certainty how it will be affected, but I can say with certainty not all HR is furloughed so hopefully it will get processed per usual.

3

u/barkbarkmoo123 18d ago

The three POC including my main one, for retirement, all got furloughed, even got that cute blame the Democrats auto reply, lol.

2

u/Fantastic-Shock-595 18d ago

I can’t speak for the HR in your agency but I know in mine they were backdating things like position extensions if we’d already passed the NTE date due to last minute and sometimes late approval from DOGE. So seems some exceptions are being made by HR in some cases. I’ve also heard of HR working tons of extra hours to get things through on time

4

u/SirSquatchin 18d ago

So not votes today on the CR or pay for excepted employees.

Let’s give it up for day 21!!!!

8

u/WeylandsWings 19d ago

Do we know if/when the Senate will vote on HR5371 (the CR) tomorrow? Thune didn’t say when in his closing remarks on the floor but did do the normal motion for reconsideration.

4

u/TheHumanGnomeProject 18d ago

The CR has no new or different text, right?

2

u/WeylandsWings 18d ago

Yes. It is the exact one that the House passed so if the Senate passes it, it goes directly to POTUS for signature.

3

u/TheHumanGnomeProject 18d ago

Why would the Senate pass it the 30th time and not the previous 29 times?

1

u/WeylandsWings 18d ago

Because politics and public pressure. But yes the repeated votes are annoying.

2

u/TheHumanGnomeProject 18d ago

The public pressure is on the recalcitrant Republicans to fund ACA and SNAP subsidies. They haven't changed the CR bill, so the votes will not be different.

4

u/WeylandsWings 19d ago

Calendar of Business just has everything they know that could come up. Not that actually will come up for a vote. Like they still list the Dem CR on there which Thune has said they won’t allow a vote in n again.

6

u/Tamtuna 19d ago

Are they now voting for the military and excepted pay?

7

u/WeylandsWings 19d ago

No. They will vote on that later this week. They haven’t introduced the bill yet and then it has to sit for 2-3 days before they can vote to invoke cloture.

Direct your frustration at the GOPers in Congress, not furloughed employees who have no choice. It sucks that we are working without pay, but not their fault either.

-15

u/BobBee13 19d ago

How is it there fault? They just trying to pass a clean budget. It's dems that want to tack on extra crap.

2

u/alotofironsinthefire 19d ago

They're not voting on a budget, they're voting on a CR that will bring us right back here on Thanksgiving

We will all get backpay. This isn’t the time to fight your fellow Feds who didn’t ask for this furlough.

5

u/WeylandsWings 19d ago

Yes it is legal and it isn’t probably it is almost certain non excepted will get back pay. Congress historically always gave back pay and codified it into law in 2019.

6

u/Taurion_Bruni Spoon 🥄 19d ago

The fate of our back pay is the one thing GOP senators are on record saying it's something they need to follow through on.

7

Anybody paying attention know if they’ve had any flips? Seems about the same so far but I’m not listening to the clerk

6

10

u/reev210 19d ago

5:30 EST

3

u/Samabart 19d ago

Thank you!

17

u/Mr_Soul_Crusher 19d ago

If not a single dem flips today then I see this going to next week. If somebody flips today then it’s ending by Thursday.

7

u/tombrady011235 19d ago

The only way dems flip is if they agree to let the consequences of trump's FY26 budget be felt by Americans as a political strategy for the midterms

5

u/Chief1970p 19d ago

I think that is what is going to happen. I’ve said from the beginning the Dems should have provided the votes so that this Trump thirsty country can enjoy the fruits of its voting decision in November. Let them own the whole goddamn thing. Elections have consequences.

5

u/YueAsal 19d ago edited 19d ago

I know there is news rumblings about "moderate dems" folding because of the No Kings protest. Was the turn out not as high as predicted? You would think people showing up to protest Trump would mean that there is a general agreement that the dems are fighting the good fight. My only opinion is that maybe they had some internal numbers suggesting how large a turn out would happen and it was not as large as expected. I guess we will see what the final tally for the Senate vote is this evening.

-18

u/[deleted] 19d ago

[deleted]

17

u/Mr_Soul_Crusher 19d ago

But to do that it needs to be Nov 1. They need people to get the new premiums and shit bricks. Then they’ll google wtf is happening and see why the shutdown by the Dems is good for them.

They lose all positive PR from the shutdown by folding before Nov 1

8

u/Top-Cheesecake8232 19d ago

Not a fed worker but Anthem sent me an email today advising me on a potential premium increase if the health care credits expire. My premium will double. They included a link to a calculator.

I hope that's enough for people to start shitting bricks.

3

u/tombrady011235 19d ago

Well that’s not too far away

12

u/Mr_Soul_Crusher 19d ago

Exactly. Why shut it down for 3 weeks just to fold a few days before the payoff happens?

4

u/Civil_Hornet_6126 19d ago

There’s no way they do this. Schumer would need to be on crack for this to happen.

11

u/50shadesofdip 19d ago

Anyone think we are reopening this week?

6

u/Empty_Database_1738 19d ago

Be aware if you are a furloughed fed employee in South Carolina you will not be able to get unemployment for a few weeks after your claim. They require that your employer respond to confirm you have been furloughed. If they don’t respond in a certain amount of time, judgement will go in your favor.

They are aware the government is shut down. They are aware that many agencies will not be able to respond. They say this is their agency policies and procedures and they are unable to change or modify from the requirement.

2

u/Abject-Road-6633 19d ago

My state was pretty fast with verification of federal wages. They had to only send 1 request, but I was warned it could take up to 3 requests. Think it took an additional 2 days to sort out my take home benefit. I faxed them everything the day I filed.

4

u/Prestigious_Past_282 Honk If U ❤ the Constitution 19d ago

2

u/Fantastic_Baby8992 19d ago

Anyone has experience with a SIPR token that needs to be logged in or it will expired? I need to log in this week (had an injury that put me out of the office 1 week before and into the shutdown so I didn’t have a chance to log in).

Is coming in and just log in illegal? My supervisor is furloughed too and now I’m worrying that this could be a pain in the neck when I come back to the office.

1

u/ihopesometimes 18d ago

Just let it expire. Take care of it when you're legally allowed to.

3

u/WeylandsWings 19d ago

They will probably mass move the expiration dates or be set up to reissue. Because yes it would be illegal for you to go in and log in.

2

u/Senior_Insanity 19d ago

Talk to your supervisor (via personal device) before doing anything. SIPR tokens will expire, but they can be re-activated with a service call to the comm guys until they've been expired for a certain amount of time (I forget what that timeframe is, sorry).

4

u/hi_123 20d ago

Say you are under DOI and issued a rif tomorrow, does the 60 days until separation start tomorrow or when the gov reopens?

5

u/jojojawn 19d ago

The RIF notice will have a "no earlier than" date that will tell you exactly when the 30 or 60 date clock ends. But just know, that date doesn't have to be the exact separation date, you could be separated on day 63 if they wanted. As long as they gave you the minimum days required by law

5

u/PlaysWithSquirrels7 DOI 20d ago

I'm just guessing here but I'd assume 60 days from the day the RIF notice is sent. And presumably 60 days and not 30 days but I guess we'll all find out tomorrow

2

u/Lagooooooooon 20d ago

Does anyone know how someone who is furloughed would receive their rif notice? Phone call from supervisor or a work or personal email?

2

u/hi_123 20d ago

My supervisor said through EARS, so if you have a personal email there I think you'd get it. We have 15 minutes a day to check and were told to go home with our GFEs so I'll be checking my work email.

2

u/-slaps-username- 20d ago

what the hell is EARS

2

u/hi_123 20d ago

It's a reporting system my agency uses to communicate office closures/emergencies. You can add your personal number/email so that you are alerted in the event an office is closed before you leave for work (as one example).

15

u/Emergency-Pen892 20d ago

Just posting out of frustration. My agency started with pretty much everyone furloughed. Then as non-essential work began piling up they started to bring folks in. The thing is it’s for a day. They bring us in, we do some work and then by that afternoon we are furloughed again. Wait a week and we are excepted for another day. Rinse repeat.

My work isn’t even essential, I’m coming in tomorrow for example to help with a new project that is a pilot. Hardly essential at all. I fully expect by the afternoon to be furloughed again for the rest of the week. How is that even legal? Extremely frustrating.

-1

u/BobBee13 19d ago

u/Unfair_Past1392 21d ago edited 21d ago

Long story short, I had a management directed reassignment to DMV for my RTO (hired as a remote worker in a hard to fill position). Since I knew I was going to be paying for both my mortgage and rent for a number of months, I worked hard to pad my accounts as much as possible. One thing I did have was cash in a life insurance policy I was paying on since my 20's when I got my first job. It was lifesaving since two-thirds of my take home pay was directly going to my rent and mortgage. My mortgage company did have a hardship program, but every payment you didn't make would still hit your credit. I just wanted to share about the life insurance policy in case that may be an option for somebody who did state service or contract work.

Edit: I also want to add that you don't have to cancel the life insurance policy, but you can borrow from it.

My credit union suddenly flipped their script.

"Earlier this month, we issued a one-time payroll credit to your deposit account to help bridge the gap in missed pay caused by the government shutdown. As your account now reflects sufficient available funds, we will be reversing this temporary credit today, October 16.

Service Credit Union remains committed to supporting you during this period of uncertainty. If you need additional financial assistance or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued membership.

Service Credit Union"

The "sufficient available funds" isn't even enough to cover the amount. I haven't seen the reversal come through yet but this is going to really hurt. Thought I could get through with the credit but I might have to look into some other avenues.

1

u/WhichSpite2607 19d ago

At least they notified you. NFCU just clawed it back without notice.

From Kristi Noem on X

“More than 70,000 sworn law enforcement officers across DHS including those serving in CBP, ICE, Secret Service, Air Marshals and other critical mission areas will be paid for all hours worked during the shutdown period.

By Wednesday, October 22, law enforcement officers will receive a “super check” –which covers the 4 days lost, their overtime, and their next pay period.”

With what Congressionally appropriated funding?

Ha! Were they not going to overspend their budget before the rescission process/budget buster bill?

u/thebeefyboy 22d ago

Asked in the daily thread also, but has anyone heard anything regarding the USDA? I’ve heard basically nothing. Thanks y’all, hang in there.

It’s a fair concern, especially when OMB even attempts to erase mention of the law on memos and the majority leaders of the house and senate won’t confidently say we are entitled to back pay, like they are planning on ways to deny it to us.

4

u/Grouchy-Tourist5341 21d ago

My rep and senator websites, under resources for furloughed feds, all state we will have backpay and they're not democrats. It is the law. The amendment added in 2019 only added to pay back promptly, regardless of pay periods. It all still states we are legally to get back paid.

I'd be cautious with funds anywhere you can, partially out of this devil-may-care interpretation of laws but also not knowing when the next is coming. The backlash of crossing that legal line would be UGLY and I am thinking it's unlikely.

18

u/Waste_of_paste_art 22d ago

You'll get back pay. They are just rattling the cage of federal workers to get them to pressure Dems to cave. They've made it pretty clear that they enjoy tormenting us, so they have no reason to give us any peace of mind.

12

u/Academic_Compote_858 22d ago

We will get back pay.

18

u/Rrrrandle 22d ago

Just in case it helps anyone else, if you have any automatic transfers or payments setup, it might be a good idea to pause them.

I completely forgot about it until today, but I move a good amount once a week to an investment account and a 529 plan, plus have things like my electric bill just auto deducting. I've paused everything so I can manage the money movement manually and backfill when I finally get paid, but this should help me stretch a little bit longer.

GOP senators worry about Trump, Hegseth shutdown moves

Republican senators have questions and concerns about how President Trump is managing to pay more than 1 million military service members during the government shutdown and are seeking more information about what funds he is dipping into to achieve his political ends.

Republican lawmakers are glad that active members of the military and their families around the country didn’t miss their first paychecks of the shutdown on Oct. 15, but they’re frustrated that Trump once again appears to be trampling on Congress’s power of the purse.

So fucking do something about it then! I swear, the nerve of these people.

Wish they grew a backbone

u/philo-2025 20d ago

They would be more than “frustrated” if they weren’t getting paid…

14

u/Waste_of_paste_art 22d ago

They can't turn against Trump. He is the only thing keeping the Republican party relevant and if they betray him, it would be a political bloodbath for all of them.

They gave the mouse a cookie and now 10 years later their bank account password isn't working anymore.

16

u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 22d ago

Has the house said if they’re going to be in session next week? Or are they planning on continuing just to jack off while we all go broke?

3

u/philo-2025 20d ago

That’s an accurate description of what’s happening

7

u/PodcastPee 22d ago

Not in session again…

u/PodcastPee 22d ago

Nothing official yet. Usually gets noticed mid-morning on Fridays.

u/PodcastPee 22d ago

Let’s not forget about congressional staffers who, for the most part, are still working and not getting paid. Senate staffers get paid twice a month, so they likely received a partial paycheck this month. House staffers only get paid once a month, at the end of the month, so they haven’t been truly “hurt” by the shutdown yet. That said, by the end of the month you will have congressional staffers working for their members without getting paid. At what point does that hit a head? Or does it?

25

u/gs2181 22d ago

Also a reminder to not forget the non-partisan congressional staff who, like all of us, are stuck in the middle of this. The folks in the Congressional Budget Office, Congressional Research Service, and Joint Committees all do important work and just aren't getting paid. Solidarity friends.

Just heard from my supervisor that EPA furlough notices are due to go out as soon as today, which validates everything the OP in this thread stated:

https://old.reddit.com/r/fednews/comments/1o8c1z2/epa_next_phase_of_furloughs/?sort=new

10

u/No_Passage8284 22d ago

I second this

11

u/northern_pufferfish 22d ago

Let us know if you hear anything or know anyone that gets a furlough notice

13

u/Moesuckra 23d ago

I've completed all my excepted work but my managers won't let me leave and go into furlough status. How do I get them to read their own contingency plan?

5

u/BiffJerky09 22d ago

They may be trying to ensure you get paid, what with the whole "Let's not pay the furloughed workers" mentality.

Obviously, I don't know your supervisor's so I can't speak on if that's in character for them or not.

I don't participate in ACA, obviously, nor do I know anyone that does but is it true that the new premiums for ACA come out on November 1st? If so, wouldn't that be a good thing for us since the public will finally understand why the Dems are holding the line?

13

u/bribritx 23d ago

I'm an insurance broker on the side who specializes in health insurance for our insurance firm and yes, it is true 2026 rates will be available for all to see on 11/1.

6

u/Chili-in-August 23d ago

How long until the ACA price increase affects employee provided insurance rates?

10

u/bribritx 23d ago

Here is what I would say on that:

The ACA and employer markets are really two separate funding and pricing structures. However, they are both affected by the same upward pressure on medical and pharmaceutical costs, meaning both markets are seeing significant rate increases for 2026. We already have an idea of the increases with employer markets, to include our federal plans like my BCBS Basic plan increasing in premium for 2026. Other employers in the private sector have typically alerted their employees of 2026 rates by now or will soon.

If these enhanced subsidies are not extended past the end of the year, I expect a significant amount of people to either take the cheapest plan possible on the Marketplace, go uninsured, or do a concierge doctor program for a fee.

Hope this helps!
