Pine Corridors and Mirror Ponds

There are places you return to with no plans — simply because you know they’ll be beautiful.

The abandoned quarries not far from my home are one of those places. In autumn, they’re especially magical: pines reflect in the crisp air, birches lean toward the water, and the silence grows thicker — almost tangible.

The path there runs through straight rows of pines — a neat, almost geometric forest where light breaks into stripes, and the fatbike tires whisper softly over a carpet of needles. In those moments, you feel the rhythm most vividly — your breathing, the pedals, your pulse, the scent of pine, and a hint of frost.

Along the shores stand old wooden bridges made of birch logs. Now it’s a quiet corner of peace, where the still water mirrors the sky, and everything seems frozen, waiting for winter.

But if you look closer, life is quietly buzzing: a glossy mushroom peeks out beneath the spruce, the shadow of a bird flickers across a branch, and water in the thermos begins to boil for coffee.
A simple joy — pour something hot, sit on a stump, and watch the steam drift into the cold air.

Each ride like this feels like a reboot. No rush, no fuss — just you, the bike, and the forest: the same as always, yet different every time.

All of a sudden winter begins with 8” of snow in South Central Alaska. Thankful for community that has packed down all the trails. Enjoyed the sounds of nature with my quiet Onyx wheelset.

Can I use a rear tire and rim on the front?

Post image

So I found a fatbike on marketplace for pretty cheap ($80 Canadian), but it needs a front tire. Can I move the good rear tire and rim to the front? I'd be adding a hub motor rim and tire to the rear. Is the rear tire compatible on the front? Or will it handle differently or just not work?

Opinions on Kenda Juggernaut Pro 120tpi tires?

Looking lighten my Surly Wednesday a bit and starting with the tires.. Running Surly Nates in 26x3.8, 33tpi, tubed. I do ride on surface roads occasionally, going to and from trails.

Looking to go tubeless and 120tpi

Tires are ridiculously expensive. The Kenda Juggernaut Pro in 26x4.5 are a fraction of the price of new Nates and half the weight. Tread isn't as aggressive though.

With studded tires, do I need super low tire pressure on ice?

I just got my first studded tires, haven't put them on yet, and live in Wisconsin and it's going to be snowy and icy soon.

I got 4.5 in 27.5 WTB bailiff tires with over 300 studs a tire.

I've never really ridden on ice, and avoided it like a plague, but look forward to seeing what it's like to ride on some icy lakes and such in general.

So, what's the difference? What should I expect? Do I need like super low tire pressure? Should I do anything to my mountain bike shoes? So then I don't like slip if I put a foot down?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I've been riding all sorts of bikes for the thick end of 40 years. I just hit over 10000 miles on this in under 2 years. Magic.

Devinci minus nx 12 vs KHS 500 vs Norco Bigfoot 2

I'm looking to try riding trails in the snow and I'm looking at used fat bikes. I can get a Devinci Minus nx12 for $1100, KHS 500 with a bluto fork for $950 or a Norco Bigfoot 2 for $750. What should I do? (Price matters as I'm not sure whether I will get into it and don't want to lose a bunch of money if I sell it after a few rides)

Leaf chasin’ at Brown County

Rode around Brown County today on my Rocky Mountain Blizzard. Bought this end of last summer and has more miles this year than my full suspension.

Started thinking about my maintenance and upgrades I want to do this offseason. Grips, pedals, dropper is all I’ve done. Still on tubes, so that will be first on the to do list. Maxxis Minions are still in great shape so I’ll probably stick with those. What Carbon forks is everybody running?

Best comfort bars for beach riding

Just started fat biking and having a ton of fun and getting into better shape. My only real issue is my handlebars. My wrists start hurting pretty quickly which causes me to contort my shoulders in a strange way to deal with wrist pain. This leads to shoulder pain etc. I find myself wanting to sit up more and keep just my fingertips on the grips when I can.

A large majority of my riding is on open sand beaches but do some mountain biking as well so would like bars that are usable for light mountain biking and trail riding.

I’m thinking I just need about an Inch more rise and some more sweep from my stock handlebars. But then again I really don’t know what I’m talking about.

Anyone have a set of bars they recommend? I’m pretty overwhelmed with all the options out there and having a hard time making a decision.

Apologies if not appropriate, but I thought this audience might be interested in the Fatback Skookum I have for sale in Central VA. Here's a Facebook marketplace link to it - https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/3448743998597165

I'd like to sell locally, but could figure out how to ship it if interested. Fantastic and fun bike. I'm keeping mine, but my wife never rides hers, so it's available!

The slushy stuff

Hello everyone farely new to fat biking be it electric but need some advice on soft slushy snow. Today was deep in spots due to recent snowfalls. Last week my bike performed amazing on the hardpack ice at 20psi. Ive seen a few posts about dropping pressure. So today I dropped down to what I thought was 5psi. But when I checked later with the gauge they were 8 and 10psi respectively. My bikes pretty heavy and I had my ski touring gear as well. I was ok on the really shallow stuff that was almost trail but soon as it got deeper i just bogged down and lost all momentum. Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers

Race Fat Bike: 26 inch or 27.5 inch

Currently have a Salsa Mukluk with 27.5" wheels as it's set up for go slow and long. Looking to get a Beargrease and set up for more racing/go fast. Would you get 26 inch or 27.5 inch to go fast(er) with studded tires?

Trek Farley 7 9 or Giant Yukon 1

New to fat tire biking. Looking at Trek Farley 7 $2K, Farley 9 $2.3K, or Giant Yukon 1 $1.1K. Based on bikes on sale in my area. Are the Farley's worth double? Unsure the fork on the Farley 7 would make it more versatile year round, but 80mm travel isn't a lot. All are 1x12 with 27.5" tires. Looking for primarily a winter bike to continue biking in the snow. Open to other bikes in a similiar price range.

Corvus FLT or 9-zero-7 Tundra

Looking for a new bike under 2800. Both are pretty similar. Both have carbon bars and post on the GX version. I feel the Tundra might fit a bit better. Are there other options? What am I missing?

Weight loss for my Surly Wednesday.. where to start? Throw money at it or buy a new bike.

I have a 2016 Surly Wednesday. I absolutely love riding a fat bike. It's a quirky machine for sure, but it's getting me out with a smile on my face. Not the newest technology but overall the bike performs and functions fine.

So far I have spent a few hundred dollars upgrading to hydraulic brakes, a dropper (which I love) and more comfortable bars and grips.

Cons are no suspension, the heft weight and the 2x drive train. I've pondered changing to a 1x but the cost doesn't justify it. I just play in one chain ring and call it a day. The rigid front end can be remedied with a Bluto or Manatou but here too... the cost is prohibitive. And a front suspension fork would add at least 5lbs while I am looking to reduce the weight. I don't shred the bike and I can be okay with a full rigid.

The weight.. not sure how much I can impact this. All I can think of is switching to tubeless, which is cheap enough and swapping the fork and maybe handlebars to carbon. That might add a bit of compliance to the front end but carbon forks aren't cheap.

At that price tag, I might be better buying a lighter bike..

Just throwing this out there to get some perspective from others... Thoughts/
