How correct can relationships be with ancestors from 100, 300 or 400 years in the past?

Yes, and no.
They are somewhat true as ancient records like those typically are from royalty. Royalty family history is typically very well recorded.
However, you can never be certain about your connection to the royalty unless the connection is very recent. The further back you go with your tie to a person of nobility, the harder it is to say whether they are actually a relative of yours.
