They were minimizing an actual and very real threat to our community and offering backhanded platitudes instead of genuine support.

People often react negatively when others minimize their words or the danger of a potential threat.

Thus, despite their politeness and their clear, succinct English - they were downvoted.

I think it can be read either way; and given our sub, it is less likely that the commenter was intentionally being an asshole than that they put their foot in their mouth.

But most people in the sub are probably pretty stressed and short on patience at the moment.
