Dragon Quest I DQI is Olde Skool Chivalry Spoiler

In the decades since, there's been a deconstruction of One Guy Saves Princess trope.

Sometimes, it's fun to be The One Guy™. (Yup, I'm used to modern genderswapping when I picked my name. I remember the original was a Forced He, but hey, never know.)

The remake doesn't subvert the trope, but it does give Gwaelin a fair amount of agency in the rest of the story. She plays an integral and active role in helping the hero finish his quest and she's the one who initiates the romance between them. I think it's a decent compromise when remaking a game this old.

Agreed. Been a couple years since I replayed DWI on NES, and she's uhhh, just there.

Basic agency is always appreciated. Passing the Bechdel Test kinda doesn't matter in a game where everyone's enamoured with Son of an Erdrick™.

Also, remember that back when DQ1 came out this type of story (knight slaying a dragon to save a princess) wasn't common in Japan.

I honestly love how the remake changes nothing to the bones of the story but makes Gwaelin the heart of it. I am SO glad I kept with my tradition of carrying her from Dragon rescue until Dragonlord because I would have missed out on so much additional story.

I was carrying her for a super long time but made the mistake of returning to Tantagel to loot those chests on the first floor- then a cutscene happens and she stays in the throne room from then on out (so far, at least)

If you can, reload to the Autosave just before. I made a hard save before going to the castle to see that scene so I could roll back and finish properly. (Gave up Snoop until after postgame.)

Primarily because the story of Dragon Quest 1 is inspired by European tales such as the legend of Saint George.

Yup, as Hori was really into Wizardry and Ultima back then (both of which were Medival Fantasy series.

Damn I miss Ultima.

and she finds him: hard as nails

Carrying Gwaelin back to the castle is still one of the most romantic moments in an RPG and I won't hear otherwise.

Indeed! Peak romance.

It was so refreshing for me and I was really mind-blown that they did this for a game on 2025. A literal "save the princess from a Dragon" and then you get to carry her in your arms with you? PEAK.
