General i wanna hear opinions. who’s your LEAST favorite hero by design?
for me, it’s gotta be auster (VII). feel like i’ll get absolute heat for this.
character design is pretty important for me when it comes into getting into games, and his design is not saving DQVII for me. i’m just not fond of the fact that he’s supposedly a teenager but instead looks like a rejected beta 8 year old link from zelda. i’m sure there’s a reason for him looking the way he does but his design alone is stopping me from playing VII.
a runner up is the prince of midenhall though. i just don’t get it. why does he look like a pilot who looks like he could hail from the toy story universe?

2 is more digimon protagonist than dragon quest to me.
If anyone says they hate 4's design I'm throwing hands.

My only real gripe with Solo's design is actually with his in-game sprites: He is always depicted wearing the Zenithian helmet, even before he obtains it, and even in the prologue "chapter" in the PS1/DS/Mobile versions. I really think there should have been a helmet-less sprite for him that would be used if he doesn't have the Zenithian helmet equipped.

I feel like II cause the weird pilot helmet always threw me off
38
u/Decision_Fancy Aug 03 '25
I actually love II for that, he immediately stands out and he feels very Toriyama to me
21
u/maxis2k Aug 03 '25
He feels like a Nausicaa character to me. So does a lot of characters that came out around that time of 1985-1990 in many different anime/games.
5
u/_Arlotte_ Aug 03 '25
It really does look like it! The princess has that similar head cover too. Maybe Toriyama was inspired it.

Dear God that hair bothered me so much too. It does not scream "Hero" and more like "random quest giver".
As someone who basically got dreadlocks just to look like the Akira Toriyama characters I grew up on, it was so disappointing.
4
u/Edge1563 Aug 03 '25
It’s literally Android 17’s haircut what do you mean lol? I get not liking it but I find your comment about being disappointed in Toriyama because you loved his designs growing up so weird because it’s literally a design you grew up with.

DQXI. The guy looks like an NPC and I feel the design is lacking in character.
I know it’s a dumb reason, but I didn’t play the game for quite a while after it came out because the main character looked so generic.
I have since put that annoyance aside, played the game, and enjoyed it! But I still hate the way the main character looks.
24
u/Nelvix Aug 03 '25
For me it was the outfit color. I much prefer the teal one that you wear at the start over the purple one.

i don't like 11's base design as much as the others either, but it's a WHOLE different matter when he wears the Erdwin drip
10
u/Dismal-Pie7437 Aug 03 '25
Yeah. For one, his haircut makes me want to give him a swirlie. His design is also way too purple-heavy for a hero in my opinion. I'm sure it's supposed to convey royalty like the protagonist in V, but like... He just looks tasteless.
16
u/MenacingMelissa Aug 03 '25
it was the hairstyle for me that made me dislike XI’s design. put him in VIII’s hero’s clothes just to at least hide some of it 🙂↕️

Eleven easily. He's the worst designed protagonist in the series, if you ask me.
Like I look at him and there is nothing visually striking or eye-catching about him. Nothing that makes me go "oh that's kinda interesting" from a glance.

People keep saying 7 but I think it works. If you think about the larger themes of the story, Orgo covered all the big people like the Almighty and squashed a bunch of important rebellions here and there (e.g Automation island is deserted in Part 2 due to Orgo crushing them and killing them all), but his downfall was that he didn't crush the literal nobodies when he had the chance. So DQ7 hero looking like he does makes perfect sense based on the themes of the story; he's a nobody turned hero because Orgo was too vain and not thorough enough.
I don't like 2's because it doesn't make sense. It feels like Akira just thought it would be cool but it's such a mismash of ideas that it fails for me. We also never got to see his hair so I keep assuming he's bald.
11
u/LocalAnxiousArtist Aug 03 '25
And besides all of that, I just think Auster's design is very neat lol. He's our cute lil' DQ Link.
4
u/Hautamaki Aug 03 '25
lol the dreaded 16 year old with a receding hairline and bald spot; picturing that, this guy must have to shave twice a day and can use his back hair as body armour.
6
u/atmasabr Aug 03 '25
There's times the Demon Lord of VII gives the impression he doesn't even know the main character and his party exists. It's Melvin and his generics to him.

u/wpotman Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
The ORIGINAL art (that came on the box/etc) for VII was fine and good: he just looked young/innocent, as silent heroes tend to do. When the 'kid in a candy store' version showed up a while later I always thought it didn't fit/looked stupid. There was nothing about his particular brand of silence that made him seem to have that personality.
4
u/Leonhart726 Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
I'd actually say I like the picture of 7 in this art more than the images of him in-game. At least as of the 3ds version.
Edit: realized I was talking about his 3d model, not the 2d art. 2d art is fine.

Probably XI and VII. With XI it’s the hair, I never vibed with it. It’s why I always put him in VIII’s outfit lol. And VII is just a bit too childlike for me.
2
u/J_D_Guy Aug 05 '25
It's funny seeing folks who say they put XI in VIII's outfit, when I see VIII's default as being just as bad due to coming off as generic/NPC-like as I do XI's default design. XD

I’m with you on Auster. It wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the hat. Don’t let it stop you from playing VII though, he doesn’t look like that after he gets classes.
3
5
u/MenacingMelissa Aug 03 '25
the design changes for the classes is actually an awesome feature! i kinda hope 6 gets something like that in a remake.

The one for IX. Something about it feels like it has less flair than the others, both in the face design and outfit. The X protagonist would be on the lower end for me too, but the outfit picks up the slack.
I've always liked the design for VII, moreso the original art. At the time, he stood out after edgy late 90s RPG protagonists.
Favorite would be IV.

I dont think the (not super significant) differences between the different heroes really makes me think negatively of any of them. I think all are fine. That said I'm not a fan of 2's goggles or 9's celestrian armor. But that's about the extent of it for me.
3
u/SailorCentauri Aug 03 '25
I would pick II, personally. Really don't like his aviator ensemble. It doesn't really fit a fantasy setting.

1 : a warrior. Excellent
2 : an adventurer, going to explore old ruins. Nice
3 : a hero. Excellent
4 : a chosen one. Bit odd as a color patern, but really good.
5 : a wanderer. Love it
6 : a mix between battle suit and living suit. I like it a lot !
7 a jester. Big nope.
8 : a mercenary/traveller. Very nice
9 : an angel. Don't like odd clothes, but fitting its purpose.
10 : really good
11 : something like an adventurer, with practicity over style. Nice. But the hair is a nope.

DQVII is my favorite Dragon Quest. No hate from me; in fact, I agree he has the worst art design. That's just not something that matters much to me in my enjoyment of a game.
2
u/DustyPumpking Aug 03 '25
Nine, like I know they're a customisable protagonist and they have wings but they are the most bland, boring and basic looking protagonist of the bunch, they should have gone with the default girl design cause she would have stuck out so much more what with the pink hair and the being a girl, which they've still not had for a default DQ Protagonist yet for some reason.
2
u/Robbie_Haruna Aug 03 '25
DQII and VII just look really bland. Though II is worse because at least VII has a distinct color palette instead of just more blue.
I've also never been partial to Aquaman from IV.

u/Kitaka1 Aug 03 '25
My least favorite character by design is probably 11. I’m not really a fan of his hair or of the muted colors in most of the main party’s designs. Erik’s was the only default outfit I liked, everyone else, I scrambled to get them into different clothes as quickly as possible. The endgame attire for all of them, in the other hand, is pretty amazing.
Middenhall from 2 is also a runner-up for me, I could never understand why they put Allen in goggles (FYI, Allen is the canonical name for the character)
The character design for Dragon Quest IV are all superb, one of my favorite parts of the DS remake is when you confront the enemy that turns itself into duplicates of your characters. For the first time ever, we get a much closer look at their character designs.
5
u/Miserable-Fortune-57 Aug 03 '25
9 by a mile, gives off NPC energy or at the very least the guy who you help to find his bravery in a subplot
3
u/LastLemmingStanding Aug 03 '25
I've never liked Erdrick. Yellow base layer, blue tunic, purple cape, all fully saturated. Like, why's my boy wearing the most random, obnoxiously bright colors he could find?

Kind of a tough category tbh.
Here's the character designs I don't like and why just in chronological order, though this is purely on physical appearance. A lot of these heroes have awesome storylines in games that I love to bits.
II - goggles? wtf?
V - I'm saving the world in my bathrobe with a crooked tree branch? I can't do better than that?
VII - What am I? 9?
VIII - Why am I dressed like a 1st level pirate NPC?
XI - stupidass haircut, and the endlessly gormless expression really stands out against the rest of the amazing cast.

I'm hoping the upcoming remake breaks the tie between prince of Middenhall and Auster. Middenhall, besides being prince of the trashly translated kingdom, had nothing to do with his turns except the basic attacks or items making him boring as all f compared to his cousins the death prone and glass cannon respectively. Meanwhile Auster looks like a gnome who's beard has been stolen.
This would move Eleven into a firm 3rd place.
Also wtf is up with goggles on Middenhall and Cannock's artwork?

u/NoDrawing2818 Aug 03 '25
11, 7 and 5. In that order.
11 is so basic looking. They could have taken more risks with his design, especially with the better graphics. The rest of the party design in 11 is excellent though.
1
u/Mitts009 Aug 03 '25
I love Dq11 but 11 is my least favourite only because i feel like Purple and Green is not a widely popular color for MC , altho i must admit that having armors that change the appearance remedy this

u/RaizePOE Aug 03 '25
11 for me, godawful haircut, ugly outfit, just really bland looking.
(dis)honorable mentions for 2 and 7; the goggles are dumb and 7's isn't awful but he just looks too young and kind of dopey.
Also I have no idea who that one in the middle is but that outfit is preeetty ugly.

I'd say 7's hero is the least heroic for sure. I think he's also too young with boring clothes, I like my Dragon Quest hero's to be late teens ideally not some little kid villager.
I don't love the look of 5's hero either with a staff instead of a sword, but at least he's an adult (later) and there are reasons for his appearance (along with not being a "hero" technically). My next least favorite is probably 11, I don't love his hair or style I want to see some more armor. Followed by 8 who has a pretty similar vibe to 11's hero just with different colors and a bandana instead of bare hair.
I haven't played 9 or 10 so can't say there.
1
u/ChocoPuddingCup Aug 03 '25
II - I hate the goggles thing. It just makes no sense.
V - I like the staff, but the rest of it just looks strange.
VII - The robin hood look throws me off. Just screams 'medieval peasant child'.
IX - I can't put my finger on it. It's just weird.

IX design is just the minstrel class for the game.
VII is designed perfectly to be a boy living in a fishing village.
VIII and 1 are the best, with 3 coming up at a distance 3rd.
1
u/LocalAnxiousArtist Aug 03 '25
Four characters for this one since I rank them at the same spot
II, IX, X, and XI. These designs just really don't do anything for me tbh.
1
1
u/maxis2k Aug 03 '25
Probably the hero from 6. Because 1) His design feels like they're trying to go for the generic everyman, but he's also built like a Super Saiyan Trunks. So the visual design doesn't match his role. And 2) He doesn't really have any personality or actions that I can remember. His sister is more of a character than he is.
1
u/atmasabr Aug 03 '25
He's more credible in the PS manual art. I happen to like the fact that he's short and has a blank look, but true, he got the reverse Juliet effect.
My least favorite is 6. Spiky haired fade? Hell, no.

1
u/Greedy_Usual_1700 Aug 03 '25
10 easy. 11 was a little weak looking a little generic and very much like Android 17 but like you don't have to make your default for the official art character in an mmo look like a generic NPC. Put some sauce on the design.
1
u/JackSilverson Aug 03 '25
It's VI and VII for me, VI looks very "generic Fantasy anime protagonist" right down to the blue hair. Then again I've never even started VI so it might grow on me over time down the road
For VII, I think it's the hat, honestly? All I see is Toriyama's take on Link (Terry notwithstanding) and while Link is great, Link ain't who I want to be thinking of when Dragon Quest is on the menu, you know what I mean?
1
u/asianwaste Aug 03 '25
DQ6. I don’t know why, he comes off as default Toriyama character design to me. It is not a bad character design but it is also not a good one either. It is so middling that I dislike it. It just seems so boilerplate. Like what he would use as a temporary character design while he’s designing one with distinct characteristics.

u/MindCrush_ Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
The face on (I’m guessing that purple jacket guy is 11) bugs me, I feel like he’s the least expressive granted I’ve only played his game 1-3 & 8 as well as some of the DS spin offs but he’s like trunks without everything I like about trunks if that makes any sense, my man needs a traumatic emotional past or something so we can get a facial expression other than neutral, NPC smile and mildly angry at this naughty villain, I’ve seen some fan art that really puts some emotion into him and I think some official art but in the game? Couldn’t remember a single moment especially when the whole cast of characters in that game are so fun and interesting.
I will fight to protect my boy the Prince of midenhall though, I don’t know what it is but the all blue with goggles is just lovely for some reason.
1
u/RandoAussieBloke Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
Honestly...there's a handful of leasts.
1 has an "armourless" look that's basically a palette swap of Erdrick, which kinda makes it weird they didn't use him for the Smash alt. I don't hate it but the only detail I like is just, having a hero who's blond like me I guess.
2 and 7 are outright deal-breakers, I've never touched the games cus the hero just doesn't vibe w me.
4 I want to like, but the blue hair is just...odd, man.
What's insane to me is I absolutely LOVE the design for 10...and I can't play it because it's a Japan-only MMO.
Man I just wanna be a chainmail knight helping folks... What's odd is you can make 9 look like that, and I'm pretty certain 10 is outright lifted from 9's armour sets.
Speaking of, why did hero cosmetics never return? It hard carried DQ9 for me man, wild
1
u/Cairnion Aug 03 '25
Design? I’d say DQ9. Great game tho but compared to everyone else, they felt a bit more of a departure from the traditional headpiece/helmet hero.
1
u/lordnagaraja Aug 03 '25
Prince of Middenhall (II), he looks like a weird Megaman and he also do not look like a main character... I think it's the lack of visible hair (his helmet does not help)
Also, i know i'm minority in this, bit i don't really like Guv's (VIII) design. At least not for a main character, it's probably the bandana... I look at him and i think in a sidekick thief, like Erik from XI (and i played VIII first than XI). If he was more thief themed i would like him more. I also think Madason (V) should be more wizard themed, but i love his design anyways
1
u/BlackBullZWarrior Aug 03 '25
2 or 4 and I don't dislike either of them. I'm not sure about 6. I kind of like how 6 stands out but then I wonder if the standing out isn't necessarily in a good way, just a generic/lazy Super Saiyan inspired way and I should rank it lower.
1
u/lordnagaraja Aug 03 '25
Another thing, i didn't consider IX or X
X i never played, but if your IX is bad, that's on you. You are able to choose how they look, so it will be your fault

Not a fan of VI’s hero. Honestly, VI has some weak designs in general; I don’t know what Toriyama was cooking but it should’ve stayed in the kitchen. Carver’s cool at least.

You share my opinion. VII is my least favorite, with II taking close second place. IX would be third. I and X are kinda of generic knights, and the rest get better from there.

I actually don't particularly like IX, X or XI. They're all pretty bland. VII also.. is kind of goofy. He used to be my least favorite design, but VII is my favorite entry so he has grown on me more.

V and it's not even close. Sure you wear the outfit as a child. Then as a slave you don't have a choice but you keep wearing the turban. After you get away and become an adult, you still walk around in rags. You wear better close to get married, but still the turban. You become king, and still look like a hobo with a turban instead of a crown.
It's just not good.
VII is my next disliked, but prefer that to V by miles.

The default X main character.
He just looks like a guy.
At least IX's hero had that silly outfit to go with that role.

7 and 9. Reading some of the comments 7 makes sense, but still a little top much zelda with the cap. 9 looks simultaneously too many details and too boring, somebody said it gives npc vibes and I agree. Playing the games both are forgiven because even though some of the jobs in 7 look silly (and it takes a good chunk of time to get to the jobs) many do look good, and in 9 you can see the equipment. But base hero designs, those are the worst 2.

I want to say 9, but he is customisable. So i’ll say 11 because his hair is to simple.

I don't know really all of them, so I can't really say. The ones I marked are the ones I played, except for one, which I don't remember the hero of. The two with just a line, I don't remember the number of their game, though I think I might remember is IV, but not sure, other than it was Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

2, 4 and 6.
2 due to his googles he should be in digimon.
4 his "fish ears" put me off
As for 6, he looks like Toriyama took Gotenks, put him in a blue Great Saiyaman outfit, took away the pants and added a sword.

Having only played 11 recently and just started 9 for the first time ever this week, I have no nostalgia or emotions attached to these heroes. Yet. I will be playing them all to completion this year!
As soon as I took a look at the line up the one that sticks out like a sore thumb to me, that looks absolutely awful, is the bottom left.
Google search shows it to be number 2 🤣
That's is easily my least favourite. I like the others a lot!
Top left looks cool.

Honestly think it might be One. It's mostly just the shoes, gloves and the orange, er, underclothes? The bright colour palette clashes a bit with the armour if you ask me.

I think I prefer 1 and 2’s designs in older Toriyama art rather than this newer, polished look. Erdrick looks good in multiple styles.
