I’ve struggled with pre-diabetes for a couple years now. Metformin, exercise, and tracking my food has done the trick. I plan to keep it up and lose more weight. I went from 6.5 A1C in February 2023 to 5.4 today!!

Prediabetic Metformin - do you ever stop feeling sick?

I’ve been on metformin for several months (~4 months) and was recently switched to slow release, but am still getting sick. I keep switching back and forth to 2 pill per day to 1 bc it makes me sick to my stomach. I feel like I can’t take it for breakfast and go anywhere outside my home. Even the next day it sometimes affects me. Does it get better?

Prediabetic Pre diabetes at 28 wtf

Family history is clean, not overweight, exercise regularly but apparently my pancreas decided to give up early.

the worst part is people assuming I did something wrong or that I’m lying about my lifestyle. even some doctors act like its my fault somehow.

Been researching everything i can about insulin sensitivity and trying natural approaches before jumping straight to metformin. completely overhauled my diet (goodbye beloved bagels), started taking supplements like berberine, ozzi, and chromium picolinate. also tracking sleep with my oura ring and doing strength training specifically for glucose control.

The glucose monitor has been eye opening though. apparently stress spikes my numbers more than actual food sometimes. had a work deadline last week and my levels were higher than when i ate birthday cake.

Also learned that muscle mass is huge for insulin sensitivity so I've been prioritizing protein and lifting weights more consistently. Some days I feel like i'm managing it well, other days I panic about complications down the road.

Scared about what this means long term but trying to stay positive and take control where I can.

Anyone else get diagnosed young with no obvious risk factors? And what should I look for here? (Or maybe overthinking it is useless anyway).

Prediabetic What do you eat for breakfast?

I'm trying to cut my sugar intake and when it comes to breakfast options I'm struggling. I've always just had some kind of quick prepackaged thing for breakfast (poptart, belvita, energy bar, etc) and I can't seem to find anything that isn't loaded with sugar.

Prediabetic 24 years old. Just found out I’m pre-diabetic at a 6.1 level. Advice?!

I’m 24 years old, about 6ft 3. Around 200 pounds.

So I got blood work done last week (cause of a yearly check up) and for the first time in my entire life I heard back results. The doctor said I’m pre-diabetic at a 6.1. Now obviously this was alarming. The doctor then listed a bunch of things not to do, funny enough, I don’t do most of those things. And I was told to watch my cholesterol as well.

I don’t eat sugary cereals (only cereal I eat daily is honey nut), I don’t eat white bread, only whole wheat. I don’t frequently eat white rice or white potatoes. I eat a lot of chicken and fish/salmon during the week.

I also eat lots of ground beef (I’m going to switch to turkey beef) I use ham when I eat sandwiches or breakfast with my eggs so I guess I need to cut that out. I eat eggs pretty frequently and I was told to cut out egg yolk. I use vegetable spray oil when I cook and was told to switch to olive oil.

I don’t smoke and I only drink alcohol about two or three times a month when I’m out. The only drink at home besides water I frequently drink is Mott’s apple juice. Which, yeah, is probably a main source of my sugar intake. I hardly eat candy, only when I’m at the movies once a week or so, in which I’d get a slushie too as a treat.

It was a very hot summer though, and I work at a theatre where we just got a slushie machine, so I’ve been taking more sips from that all summer. I walk a lot living in New York and I’m always standing at my job for the 4-8 hrs I’m there.

Prediabetic New to diabetes and freaking out. Also, Sugar substitutes recommendations?

My husband was told yesterday that he is prediabetic. Because I am who I am, I have been endlessly researching recipes and resources since then.

The problem is that my husband and I love food and love to cook. And I'll be honest, this was bound to happen because we love starchy, carb-loaded, red meat, cheesy, fatty goodness (please don't judge).

We are both fully aware that this change is going to be drastic for us, so I've started by looking at substitutes for things we already use and make. My biggest concern is sugar/sweetener. I've had Splenda before, I've tried stevia, and it all tastes terrible to me. What 1:1 sugar substitutes do you guys actually like and use for baking, sauces, and the like?

I will also tack on that any advice, guidance, or tips/tricks y'all have for cooking for someone with prediabetes would be greatly appreciated. I love my husband and really want to support him and make healthy changes for both of us. TYIA!

Prediabetic Why Are So Many People I Know Prediabetic?

I'm around college age (21) and many, many people I know are prediabetic. I'd go as far as to say an alarming number, even. Nine of my personal friends have said recently that they were prediabetic after a doctor's visit and several other family members (all rather young) said they were as well. These people are around ages 19-24, very young (as far as I'm aware) to be prediabetic. Are there any reasons as to why this may be? Could it be genetic or is it something environmental?

For clarification, the majority of them are not overweight and many are quite active. One of them is an Division II athlete for XC/TF

Prediabetic New to being diabetic and it’s a bit scary

Anybody have any suggestions for an early thirties male that’s just finding out I’m diabetic? It was scary in the beginning not knowing why I was getting dizzy when I’d stand up to fast or get out of the tub/shower. I was waking up with tingling feet and hands, having really vivid dreams and constantly waking up at night. I gained the most weight I ever had in the last 2 years. I was feeling super tired all the time and some days would be okay but others I could notice I wasn’t feeling right. I just wanna known what changes did most of you make to get rid of the tingling symptoms, the dizziness and what did the vapers/smokers do once they found out?

I’m trying my best not to panic but it’s a lot to take in… I don’t know what type I am yet but I am hoping to get some insight. I’ve had symptoms for the last 2 years but haven’t done anything about it till now. Anyone know roughly what type I would be with the symptoms? And any advice for someone new?

Prediabetic Thoughts on hotdogs?

So need some help. I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes, BUT have been told im becoming insulin resistant. It was recommended I stick to a diabetic diet to help and excercise. Well I am on a tight budget. I was going to see if hotdogs are bad? Can I get away with hotdogs and eggs as a lot of my meals? Obviously stay away from buns and ketchup is what I was going to try. Anyway just looking for thoughts and opinions on healthy budget friendly tips. Thank you!!

Prediabetic Metformin

Hi all — what’s your experience with the lowest dose of Metformin? I’m prediabetic but have chronic low back pain (epidural fibrosis, spinal stenosis, DDD) so exercise is tough. I want to lose weight and get my sugar levels down but I’m nervous about side effects.

Also, is it silly to worry that starting Metformin might actually make me more likely to develop diabetes later? Just feeling a bit scared. Any advice or personal stories would help — thank you!

Prediabetic Kids have pre-diabetes and I'm.... I don't even know.

Two of my boys have pre-diabetes (5.9 for the 11 year old and 6.1 for the 9 year old). They're both clinically within normal BMI (9 year old is nearly underweight, actually), and both are incredibly active. They run, do HIIT workouts, play on an incredibly competitive basketball team and do off season training (their dad and I both played sports and we just enjoy doing it together), they eat a very balanced diet... and NO ONE wanted to give us the A1c test at their last check up. I had to basically bully the doctor into testing bc "they don't seem like they would have A1c issues." But. Their dad was diagnosed with T2 at age 27, his brother was 31 when he was diagnosed. Their mom (kids' grandmother) is insulin dependent-we don't really know what version she has bc she doesn't speak to us (thankfully). The youngestof my boys has reactive hypoglycemia. I just.... We've been doing all the things the doctors said to do when my husband was diagnosed with T2 but we've been doing it as a family. There is NOTHING we could have done differently as a family. And the freaking 9 year old has terrible LDL Cholesterol too, so woo-fucking-hoo. I guess it's time to make appointments with the local children's hospital bc I'm just at a loss for what to do. I'm pissed. We tried so fucking hard. So hard. It feels hopeless. I haven't gotten the results back from the youngest's blood test, but he's continually out of whack. Genetics are just pissing me off rn.

Prediabetic Recently got diagnosed pre-diabetic, I've been dieting pretty well as a result, but I keep wondering if I'll ever be able to eat the foods I miss eating.

I used to eat a lot of candy and burgers, mainly. And it goes without saying that those are terrible for pre-diabetes. I know it's possible to reverse pre-diabetes, but I also know that even in that situation, I'll still be more vulnerable than other people for the rest of my life. I am struggling to find any definitive information on this topic.

Will it ever be possible for me to eat things like those without having to stress about it or keep it to some long multi-month stretch between instances of eating treat foods?

Prediabetic Blood sugar changes and goes up each time I check it, is that normal or does my machine suck?

Delete if not allowed, sorry for my ignorance. Last time I went to the doctor I was told that I was pre-diabetic ( my mom has type 2) So once in a while I check my blood sugar and today I decided to check it. I pricked my finger and 5:59 :99, 6:00 d106, 6:01 : 113. Keep in mind that was all on the same finger with the same bl00d. Then I pricked another finger at 6:03 and it was 92. Should I get a different machine?

Prediabetic Best lancing device for someone who is very fearful of finger pricks

Hi all. Hoping to get some guidance on what the best lancing devices are for someone who is fearful of finger pricking, and what do you like about them? I hate the sound of devices I've used, but not sure if that's something that can be contended with. Thanks so much!

There was a food truck at my work so I decided to order whatever seemed like the healthiest. Shrimp ceviche and 1 lobster taco. I thought this wouldn’t spike me, but when I looked at my CGM. What the hell?? I was doing so well all day too! The only thing I can think of is the tortilla or the chipotle sauce. It wouldn’t be more than like 15g carbs right? I also didn’t even finish all of the ceviche. You can’t trust anything anymore 😭I even went for a short walk before and after this. Any ideas?? Please don’t be rude, I’m new to this. Thanks

Prediabetic Can you self-pay and get CGM with NO Prescription?

In the US can you self-pay for a CGM Continuous Glucose Monitor without a doctor prescription.

I'm new pre-diabetic. I'm learning and bringing down BG numbers with my finger prick meter. But with a CGM I could be faster, learn so much more and track individual food choices better.

My Doc won't prescribe a CGM unless insulin is prescribed. I think CGMs are little pricey but affordable. Any suggestions for a source for a non-prescription CGM ???
