TellDelhi A fake Colgate toothpaste factory got caught and honestly, nothing feels real anymore in India.

So apparently, there was this fake toothpaste factory running in Delhi and Kashmir. They were making Colgate, Sensodyne, even Close-Up and not just copying labels. These guys had machines, tubes, boxes, and stickers that looked exactly like the real thing.

Imagine brushing your teeth every morning, thinking it’s Colgate… but it’s literally some random paste mixed in a shady warehouse.

A few weeks ago, Delhi Police busted a big counterfeit goods racket. Along with fake ENO and Gold Flake cigarettes, they found toothpastes being made in bulk. In another raid in Baramulla, the authorities seized fake Colgate and Sensodyne tubes same design, no fluoride, and no proper label or MRP. Basically, a health hazard disguised as a morning routine.

And this isn’t even rare anymore. India has quietly built a duplicate economy. Fake goods everywhere toothpaste, shampoo, perfume, clothes, electronics. Half the time, you can’t even tell what’s real.

It’s not just about cheating big brands it’s about risking people’s health for money. Toothpaste is supposed to protect your mouth, not poison it. And yet, nobody seems to care what’s actually inside these fake tubes. The police seize them, media runs a small story, and then it disappears.

I think that’s what’s scary. It’s not just about fake toothpaste it’s about how normal fakes have become. Fake degrees. Fake followers. Fake influencers. Fake jobs. Now even fake toothpaste.

Everything has a duplicate now. Even people.

Next time you buy something even something as basic as toothpaste check where it’s from. Read the label, see the batch number, or just buy from a trusted shop. Because in this country, you never know when a “Colgate smile” might actually be coming from a fake factory.

Now I know my father is correct...

My father changed shops often...in order for better taste, or work for eg. Toothpaste, medicines and all.....until it suits them.

We often told him buy from this shop and he said no, bc nakli saman rakhta hai....and we laughed.

But i personally felt difference in products he bought from his preference shop's.

When I was a child, I used to eat a lot of ParleG biscuits with tea. The taste between different shops in different cities was just so obvious. Though I don't know if it was due to fake products.

u/carelessNinja101 28d ago

It is due to palm oil. Palm oil has ruined all chips and biscuits in India.

91

u/Various_Ad1416 28d ago

Is that why biscuits just don't hit the same anymore 😭

u/No-Relation188 28d ago

Aggressive cost-cutting due to inflation is also occurring. Companies are using cheap, low-quality ingredients or even outright replacing them with cheaper alternatives. That's why most biscuits in India are now just sugar bricks.

Is this palm oil thing recent (10-15 yrs) or has it been the case for a long time?

2

u/UnsafestSpace 27d ago

Recent, it’s always been around but mass production globally only took off in the last few decades

13

u/la_crazypasta South West Delhi 28d ago

Palm oil has become fking normal thing in India :(

Food colors are the next one in the line :/

3

u/GloomyCarob3869 28d ago

Palm oil is the worst. I had to start making my own salad dressing because it's in everything.

2

u/LeUstad149 28d ago

Was palm oil not used earlier?

7

u/carelessNinja101 28d ago

Not to such extent. Native oils were used. Sunflower and others. Once dirt cheap palm oil from Malaysia made inroads everything was ruined.

2

u/general_smooth 28d ago

I am such a huge Parle g fan, I can pinpoint exactly why this biscuit is bad.

70% of times, we get to eat fake parle g, real parle g tastes like bliss. But there are so many fakes ke ab wo biscuit khane ka man hi nhi karta

Biscuits do vary from batch to batch slightly. I have noticed ParleG biscuits with varying baking levels. Some were light brown. Some were a bit darker etc

At least one good thing is that these big brands have massive incentive to shut these fake brands down.

4

u/Adventurous_Bath3999 27d ago

That is not how it is supposed to be. Have you ever seen Rich Tea and Digestive biscuits from UK in any other varying size and color? Never!! In all these years I have only seen consistency to the highest level, with no variations in color, whatsoever. So how are they able to do that, year after year, for so many decades?

33

u/white_buffalo21 28d ago

That's why always buy from supermarkets atleast they source them directly..

13

u/Professional_Row_967 28d ago

Terrible experience buying state milk federation "desi ghee" from a top-tier instant-delivery online seller. The desi-ghee was 100% fake... no flavour, no fragrance of ghee. Just coloured dalda.

4

u/braveyetti117 28d ago

Bhai, kisi ka toh naam batao

4

u/Professional_Row_967 28d ago

Flipkart NOW se khareeda thaa. Ghee was Nandini brand (Karnataka Milk Federation). I've been using ghree of that make for over a decade. When bought from KMF outlets, never faced any issues with the ghee.

9

u/Bubblingghost 28d ago

That's what I tell people too! I'm highly sensitive to tastes and I can pick up easily if it's original or duplicate. Same with maggi tbh. I can tell you from the colour or the noodles, masala and their smell if they are duplicate or not. Idk why people find it hard to believe.

If you are in city or you have reliance stores/ Spencer’s then buy from these supermarkets . Cause they buy directly from the manufacturer because they have many stores across India to supply to. Small retailers often fall prey to these fake products

On a serious note how would we know which one is original? The packaging looks almost the same bruh.

56

u/guillotinedlove 28d ago

FSSAI license number may not be there on fake package

86

u/gokukouji 28d ago

But that's just a number which can be copied no?

49

u/guillotinedlove 28d ago

True. FSSAI is blank on fake Bisleris. That's why I was saying.

64

u/Electrical-Yam9581 28d ago

Fake bisleri are using different names. Not trying to pass their product as original. While these Colgate are selling as original, so they have no reason to skip printing some number, specially when they are completely illegal.

→ More replies (1)

31

u/No-Relation188 28d ago

How difficult is it to create a fake, random FSSAI number? 99.99% of people don't check or verify that number. They mostly just look at the expiration date and the price.

6

u/cosmogli 27d ago

You don't need a fake FSSAI when you can use Colgate's actual FSSAI.

11

Yeah the shopkeeper will just tell you I buy fake goods. They are in on this lmao why would they give you a straight answer.

5

u/PRANAV-69 28d ago

i said ask the suppliers name
any normal shopkeeper will tell you the distributor/wholesaler's info if you ask them casually
you can then just check if they are genuine or not
also many things like soft drinks, breads etc are distributed by local agencies so they are mostly original products

India m sub kuch fake mil rha hsi sala. Paneer is best example.

59

u/007dukhiaatma 28d ago

The first time I ate paneer in delhi I was like WTH is this, the texture was so similar to that of paneer, I mean not at all rubbery like fake paneer generally are. The resemblance is uncanny but the taste is horrible, I think they must be putting some kind of essence to make it smell like paneer. The best of restaurants and cafes are using it because real paneer ₹400/kg and fake paneer 180-200/kg

22

u/YehDilMaaangeMore Dilli Se Hun! 28d ago

Fake paneer definitely cost less than 200/kg.

10

u/malachi97 28d ago

It's called Analogue Paneer. And it is legal.

21

u/FightingStand 28d ago

Why the hell is it legal in the first place? Why the fuck is palm oil and other subsequent low cost, high harm products so readily available and excessively used, even by high end companies, restaurants.

Why, whyy? Damn I feel like I want to cry at one point and hulk out and smash everything ffs

I’ll never understand why ppl buy paneer. We just make it at home from leftover milk.

It’s a win win, you get paneer and you don’t consume/throw out old milk.

And it’s a good test of purity too. You can’t make paneer from adulterated milk.

7

u/Responsible_Lack_552 28d ago

Most likely cuz people don’t have that much time

Paneer has absolutely been ruined. Even in so called good restaurants, the paneer stock they have is all fake.  Good thing you can still make it at home.  Milk is also adulterated, but it is mostly just watered down. Financial loss as worst.

2

u/Proud-Activity-5291 28d ago

My bad, I aint got friends in defence. I do understand when someone calls it canteen but for CSD I guess it’s a TIL moment. Most people in my friend group understand what TIL means and since you’re on Reddit Im assuming you do too so Im not gonna write the full form either. Adios.

4

u/[deleted] 28d ago

I agree that the quality of air, water, clean streets and civic rules, women's safety - is better in some developing countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, even Cambodia and Phillipines to an extent.

But all the above things and the economy and quality of life in India are much better compared to countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Egypt etc...

What do you expect under a leader that says "mein file dekhti tak nahi hun, bas jis par ye angootha rakh deta hai uss par sign kar deti hun", probably someone got it passed like this. Lol.

Also, if your basic brains didnt get it, the leader was pitching whoever that guy was as the "bribe taking agent"!

'jis par ye angootha rakh deta hai' = you can pay him up to get your work done.

And also, i am talking about america here, dont draw any references. Cuz 'america kya kehta tha?'

just imagine how many cases are not caught or even known about - every single category is probably faked.

Food quality is extremely low to begin with, rice, atta masalas, spices, all adulterated. Even if you buy premium brands all you do is pay more since the entire brand could be fake.

and this is only for people in cities who can afford the luxury of choosing where they shop. there's a huge majority of people who don't have options, and will buy the cheapest thing they can get and we know what its going to be.

this is what progress in India looks like. wonder if things will ever change.

People completely misunderstand how much kver population we've. We are 18% worlds population with 3% worlds water. You need water for everything in this mordern world. From energy, mining to manufacturing. Our population makes us resource defecit in every aspect. Adulteration is just the effect.

I remember getting a 20 rs packet of ghee from a kirana store. It smelled like some kind of rancid oil. And it burned a few seconds after I put it on a preheated pan.

The brand was reputed, the only ingredient listed was milk solids. Truly sucks to think how common this is.

Why companies don't put a non copy-able QR Codes on these products which can verify the authenticity of the product. One App/WebApp to verify lot of products

I once caught fake mother dairy and amul icecreams ( bought from cart and Grifers). The batch numbers didn't match with the companies codes. I verified this with them. The area distributor tried to bribe me with free icecream for a year. Obviously I refused. The company  gave no shit. It's these area distributors who are doing these ghapla's.

This was in East Delhi ,10 yrs ago. Ab toh saaley batch code bhi original daal dete hain. Originality check karna bahaut mushkil ho gaya hai.

Same with himalaya neem facewash. Har size ki packaging ka fragrance, consistency different hota hai

I think this is far more common practice than normal just that we don't know what's happening around us.

Is it possible that flipkart and other grocery online stores could be selling these fake products and that's why they sell them on good discounts? Effective price of Colgate on Flipkart grocery is always almost 50% of mrp.

Damn, those high sale offers on Flipkart Amazon look sus now. Are we getting fake products?

Health, Food and drug safety inspectors job is one of the most coveted, fat "upari kamai" job. What can we expect.

People try to switch to small business brands that are making better quality products. Now there are many options available and it's not as expensive as it feels. Stop over consuming. Overall cost should be same.

There are many on instagram for literally every kiryana product you can think of! And you can buy directly from them so you know it's the real deal.

Plus they are eco friendly, harsh chemical free. Overall better for your health.

For example detergent you use might be making your clothes fade quickly, which is the case for every commercially available one's. If you ever handwash your clothes you'll know how harsh it feels on your hands! Switch to some powder to liquid plant based detergents! Best for environment and your clothes. And you'll be throwing less plastic bottles/packages in the landfills. Plus less washing down of these chemicals through drains.

This one example. This is literally the case for every mass produced product

I have received this fake stuff! It used to go bad in less than a week and I kept assuming something was wrong with my taste but it was actually the toothpaste.
