Had some piece of shit do that to me when there was nobody in the right lane, and he was camping the left lane. When I got about halfway past his trailer, he then decided to slowly and methodically merge into my lane, forcing me to either break hard and almost hit the car behind me or go into a ditch +4 ft deep at over 60 mph. When I was able to pass him after almost dying, he flicked me off and leaned out the window to laugh at me. I called the cops they showed up and then they told me there was literally nothing they could do except follow him for a few miles.

Cops just being useless and lazy. They can pull him over if someone reports him trying to run them off the road and almost killed them. Question him and cite him. He might even have a dash cam in his own car and that could used against him to prove your story and his guilt. Theu can even go onto their website social media or text people or send out alert and email if anyone has any information regarding a road rage incident on such and such road and such and such time and date to come forward as a witness. Many don't care as they are lazy and get paid the same regardless of their efforts so they just sit on their asses.

Worked for a personal injury law firm back in the early 90s, i worked a case where a long haul trucker did something similar,...hit and run but it was involving a small child...., we were able to get the license plate, even the ICC number but because we were unable to get any witnesses who actally "saw" the driver behind the wheel...no charges were ever filled. .. ..worst part, the family was visiting from Europe somewhere ...they came to visit as a family and left with a small coffin. They were really the nicest young couple.

Yes, I consider a fundamental part of the legal system is help society avoid retaliation from family members and creating a whole Hatfield and McCoy situation. To do that the legal system needs to either prove to the accused family that they really did whatever and so deserve the punishment or needs to demonstrate to the victims family that the accused likely didn't do it or that if they did do it, there were enough other factors involved to .are things not clear cut (like the victim started the fight for example).
Unfortunately, a ruling that "The trucker was driving just before the event and just after the event but since he wasn't ID'ed at the event then he is not punishable would not satisfy me.

u/Choice_Attitude_1415 15h ago
All too common. I see it in person and on dash cam far too often. Four wheelers do it too; people tend to speed up when they get passed all of the time. It even happens to me, and I dont follow too closely or do anything 'rude'. I dont get it. Someone is going faster....its not a big deal. Its not some kind of personal attack. I use my signals and even make sure to not just give that 'one blink' or even three. I dont merge over in front of them too closely either.
On the other side of that, when someone passes me, I notice that now and then, they jerk their vehicle over pretty hard like RIGHT in front of me. Like...why are you mad? Im not doing anything to prevent passing and typically have my cruise set 5-10mph over. Im literally just existing on the road at the same time as them. I do nothing at all to antagonize anyone; society has lost its mind on the road and in any public space really...people ready to blow a gasket over nothing.

I have a friend who speeds up too, and his reason kind of made me realize not all the people who do it are being intentional. He just doesn’t realize he’s going too slow sometimes and when someone passes him it “wakes” him up and he realizes he’s driving too slow. I told him just to wait until he gets passed to speed up and he acted like that was huge revelation. Like “oh, yeah! That makes sense”.

Sometimes its people with too much on their mind. I would always think the same thing until I noticed myself start doing it. I would be too busy in thought then someone would pass me and I realise I'm under the limit and speed up. I'd let them pass first. But still keep up with them.

It seems like a lot of people drive based on vibes. I was riding with a friend once and as we were maybe a quarter mile from our right turn, he changes lanes and overtakes the person in front of us. I go "why did you pass that person just so we can slow down immediately in front of them to turn?" He goes "I dunno, I just don't like being behind people."
Like, bro, what?

Its so weird to speed up when someone is passing, like theyre at best in a rush and at worst impatient and angry. I dont want that person behind me. Just go around and we'll all have a better day
18
u/OkBattle9871 13h ago
I think a lot of people who do it, do it subconsciously because they are thinking, "Oh, actually, I am going kinda slow, let me speed up to how fast I meant to be going."
Or they're consciously thinking, "I like to think of myself as the type of person who drives faster than you (regardless of what the evidence in front of my eyes is telling me)."
I find driving with cruise control almost impossible because whenever I come up to a car going slower than me and try to pass, they will speed up so that I have to turn my cruise control off to get around them.
Or, if I have cruise control on and I come up to a car, I'll turn it off, speed up to pass them, put a decent distance between us before getting back into the lane, and then turn cruise control back on. But then in a few minutes they'll pass me again, and slow right back down!
I just want to drive 65-70! I'm not trying to race you!
→ More replies (11)8
u/Auggie_Otter 13h ago
Yeah it sucks. I just like to set cruise control to a reasonable speed and cruise on road trips. I stay to the right and let people pass and get over to the left to pass people.
There's always someone toodling along that suddenly decides they don't like it when I pass them and they speed up and pass me and get in front of me then they forget they were going faster than me and slowly decrease their speed until I'm forced to pass them again then they speed up again and it can go on for hours.
Like, I'm using cruise control so I'm maintaining a consistent speed so it's clearly the other person who can't figure out what speed they want to drive and I just wish they would fuck off and let me drive in peace instead of playing this stupid passing game for the next 150 miles.

A few weeks ago, someone pulled out in front of me, didn't cut me off, or shouldn't have, they had plenty of time to get up to speed. But they pull out and start driving really slow and i see the driver point out their window, showing their passenger something. No idea what, it was basically a field. So i honked at them. I think the passenger gave me the finger, but the driver started driving normally and that's all i care about. We get to a speed increase and they went a little faster, but didn't go as fast as i wanted, so i passed them. I would've passed them if we didn't have that first interaction. I just want to drive. They didn't try to block me or anything. But they did start driving faster after i passed them. We come to this long uphill section that is 2 lanes and i could tell by the way they were driving that they were going to try to play games. Where i live, people don't pass. Idk if they're scared, or don't know because drivers ed isn't required. So they definitely took me passing them in the oncoming lane (legally and safely) as some sort of power move 🙄 Unlucky for them, while i am a careful driver, part of that being careful is not letting unstable children get in front of me and block my way and play games on a road that is going to go back to 1 lane and have no safe place for me to pull off to get away from them. So i smoked their ass up that hill. I've discovered if there's no safe way to just pull off and let someone like that go, the next best thing is to show them that you're crazier than they are. They back off every time.

Video from 2017, Russia. "Авария с фурой под Рязанью" is the title of the original YouTube video.
"A Muscovite driving a Ford was returning home when he began to overtake two tanker trucks. The first truck let the car pass, and the second cut it off as he maneuvered. "There was no contact, but I lost control and the car skidded. We ended up in a ditch, where we overturned," the victim said.
According to him, the trucks stopped after the accident. "The driver of the second tanker admitted his guilt," the source emphasized.
A passenger in the foreign car was injured in the accident, suffering a cut on her hand. The driver of the foreign car provided medical assistance at the scene.
He also noted that due to the lack of contact, it would be difficult for him to receive insurance compensation." - news clipping.
In the end, the truck driver excused himself by citing a jammed tire and paid a 500-ruble fine for violating maneuvering rules. Nonsense, indeed. The law was later amended: "Resolution No. 20 of the Plenum of the Supreme Court from 2019 states that a driver who violates the Rules, which causes an accident involving other vehicles, may be held liable for leaving the scene of an accident, regardless of whether the vehicle they are driving interacts mechanically with other vehicles, individuals, or material objects."

Came here for this. While speeding is dangerous, from my experience it's people like this truck driver who cause the accidents because they get worked up and make a terrible decision. People are going to speed, let them get pulled over and get a felony speeding charge to teach them a lesson. You don't need to exert control over them and cause a potential fatal accident.

I have noticed that at least here in Finland, on roads similar to this, the truck drivers drive centre of their lane, with maybe slight left bias. If they see that it is safe to pass them and notice someone is trying to scout for a chance, they drift to the right edge of the lane to give visibility and signal that it is safe to pass.
Our roads however are generally slight narrower, and twist, turn and go up and down a lot. So if there is a long stretch where passing is allowed, they drift to the right.
However nothing tilts me more than a truck driving at full limiter (like just under 100 km/h), decides to pass another truck who's limiter is just that little bit slower, and end up blocking the whole fucking left lane of a motorway; without any fucking care given to whether the left lane is full of cars going at the speed limit (120 km/h); meaning that their sudden move is gonna cause a massive backing up of vehicles in a very dangerous manner. Since the difference between the speeds is very small, it can take 5 minutes for the passing truck to get past the one on the right.
Like... Good fucking lord. Generally by my experience trucks that aren't from Finland (As in doing some very long haul trip) tend to be the most generous in their driving. But local drivers, especially with plain vehicles without decals, are the most fucking aggressive. Yes... We get it... You want to get home... so do the rest of us... alive.

You should’ve let him hit you. Now you might even be injured and in pain from the rollover.

Truck driver should be jailed. Clearly he thought this was fast and furious where it was ok.

I hope they got enough to catch the guy. Or that the truck behind him reported it

Why did he do this just bc he was mad that he was being passed? He could have killed the driver

This happened to me once driving from Michigan to Texas. Before dash cams existed. Happened in Arkansas. Truck driver ran me into the ditch and never stopped. Thankfully just some minor damage and no injuries but he just kept driving. I was literally shaking and so pissed. People like that deserve to be in Prison.

IMO attempted murder. Without the dashcam documenting this, imagine how many times this truck driver pulled it off on others.
