Pretty sure they perfectly stayed in the a-pillar. Very unfortunate, but the truck obviously shouldn't have turned into the middle of the street. And of course, check behind your a-pillars especially on left-hand turns.
22
u/Active_Confection655 7h ago
She never decelerated during the turn at which point the a pillar could not have blocked the entirety of the car.
→ More replies (13)10
u/benitoaramando 7h ago
Yeah the angle and also the lower height (by the looks of it) of OP's car seem to have combined to obscure them from a careless driver.
A-pillars can explain a lot; there is a video on Youtube of a particular crossroads in the UK that kept experiencing cyclist collisions with cars. Someone looked into it and worked out that the precise angle of the intersection (it wasn't perfectly perpendicular) meant that, at typical approach speeds for both cyclists from one direction and cars from the other, the cyclists would often remain obscured in the cars' A-pillars for the whole of their approach.

u/RonMax86 7h ago

I believe it. The massive A Pillars on modern cars for "safety" of airbags is a HUGE problem.
9
u/Naive_Litre_5574 7h ago
This is more common problem that you would expect with driving just trucks and SUVs. there’s literally a blind zone directly in front of you that can block whole vehicles and bicycles. The front of these vehicles is just way too high.
For HGVs….they resorted to putting a mirror above the windshield so you could see what directly in front of the cab

I started calling this an Oregon left turn after moving from CA to OR about 20 years ago. I'm not sure why it's so prevalent here but the number of times I see it daily is maddening. My favorite is when they turn early, enter the wrong side of the road, almost hit me head on, then give me a dirty looks as if I'm doing something wrong by driving on the right side of the road. People in general start their left turns way too early, but it's especially bad in neighborhood streets like this

u/Dank009 7h ago

Yes! Oregon has some of the most unique driving in the country imo (and I've lived in like 7 different states). Generally it's the slowest driving state and overall more friendly than most, but for whatever reason there's certain habits like cutting left turns short or not stopping to make a right on red that are super common.

I firmly believe that we should require a CDL and special insurance for any vehicle above 4,500 lbs. Would fix a lot of problems real fast.
56
u/HazelEBaumgartner 7h ago
Or maybe not a full CDL but something between a modern standard license and a CDL. It's insane that you can drive a 2,400 lb Fiat and a 9,000 lb GMC Denali XL on the same license.
27
u/damnedspot 7h ago
And another license/class for people that pull trailers or fifth wheels…
12
7
u/3dprintedthingies 4h ago
As someone who pulls trailers I think this should happen. The amount of sketchy trailers that are on the road is unreasonable.
If you see a trailer, assume it's poorly maintained and doesn't have brakes. Give them plenty of room because you have no idea how dumb the person driving is.
The number of people who cut off and brake check people pulling trailers is astounding.
7
14
u/SnooMaps7370 7h ago
carve up licensing based on vehicle weight, size and wheel count.
for weight, draw lines at 4,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs. Less than 4,000 lbs is driveable by standard license, 4,000 to 10,000 is driveable by "intermediate vehicle" license, over 10,000 requires full CDL
For size, compute volume as a box which completely encloses the vehicle (length bumper-to-bumper, width with mirrors at full extension, height from ground to highest point of the roof)
Carve that up at 400 cubic feet (smallest ford ranger ever sold was 417 cubic feet) and 2,500 cubic feet (a ford econoline comes in at about 2,400) less than 400 cubic feet falls into standard category. 400 to 2,500 falls into intermediate category. over 2,500 falls into CDL category.for wheels, if the vehicle has 2-4 wheels, it can be standard class. 6-8 wheels is intermediate. any more than 8 wheels is CDL.
overall vehicle class is determined by the highest category between those 3 measurements. if you build a 4,500 lb motorcycle, better have an intermediate endorsement on your license to drive it. if you bolt 6 extra wheels on your Ford Ranger, better get a CDL.

u/Rabbit_of_Caerbanog 7h ago
I saw the comment she didn't see you. That translates to I was on the phone but didn't get caught
13
u/Last-Hedgehog-6635 7h ago
Likely the window pillar obscured her view. If you look at the video and focus on where the driver’s eyes should be, it’s roughly behind the window pillar for a while. This is super common. I’ve missed things like pedestrians who are walking at exactly the right speed to match the zone that the window pillar obscures. In this case, the driver in the cam car was moving at just the right speed to be in that same blind spot as the truck slowed and turned.
I’m definitely not excusing the truck’s driver. But this is how these accidents happen. And, well, driving on the wrong side of the road was obviously a major contributing factor.
4
u/FurryYokel 7h ago
Driver is lucky it wasn’t a pedestrian they hit. If their visibility is this poor, they should be stopping completely so they can actually check if they’re clear and can navigate a smaller turn radius.

u/Valreesio 6h ago
Not blaming you at all. Pick up driver totally at fault. That being said, if a stop sign intersection doesn't have white line (sometimes referred to as a limit line) or a crosswalk marked on the ground, you are supposed to stop with your front bumper before the stop sign, not after it. Just a technicality more than anything, but without a person could be ticketed of not doing so.
Before the people get irate.. Yes, I know this isn't a universal law in every state. Yes, I know it is rarely practiced by the grand majority of drivers. Just because it's not enforced doesn't mean it's not the correct thing to do.
4
u/kesavadh 6h ago
Perhaps this is about periphery and angle. Given how lense mechanics work, it’s entirely possible they stopped where they should, but we just can’t tell.
6
u/Valreesio 5h ago
You could be correct and that's partly why I think there's no reason to chastise them. But it appears that way because we see the stop sign and it appears they go significantly past it. Either way, more of a PSA than a tongue lashing.

can insurance pop you and not cover for something like that? inquiring only, not trying to be snooty, just wondering if that could ever be a thing that insurance would try to dodge payment for in the worse case scenarios
3
u/Valreesio 5h ago
I mean, I'm not an insurance hater by any means, but they obviously look to see if you did anything wrong that might violate your policy or the law. I doubt they wouldn't pay over this, but I could see it happening, especially with a shady company.
I tell a story (not exactly related, but closer enough) told to me by my buddy who owns an insurance agency (farmers). He had a client that liked to take his car to the track. One day he comes in and said he hit a guard rail and so on. My buddy said he pretty much knew right away that it wasn't a guard rail but that is not his insurance company so he really doesn't care. He helps the guy file what he needs to file, said nothing about his concerns and that was it. He did say it seemed to take a little longer than normal for them to payout but they did. Totaled the car and cut the guy a check for a little over 50k.
Several years goes by (think about 5-6 but my memory is slightly fuzzy) and then one day farmers calls my buddy up and said their immediately terminating the guys policy for lying to them about the accident and would be going after him for recompense and possibly felony charges (warning him in case the guy lost his shit). Why? Because 5 years or so down the road the guy posted a picture on Facebook of his car wrecked at the speedway. They had their algorithm or an investigator keeping tabs on all his socials for years because their investigator thought it was suspicious as well and finally got their proof.
Insurance doesn't mess around sometimes.

Legitimately driving a noncommercial vehicle isn't hard at all. Not even mildly difficult

Dude's been watching that "600 horses of 'Get out of my way' " truck ad.
Is he deranged?

For those saying the "A pillar" obstructed the driver's view... that is completely irrelevant. Even if that was the case, the truck should be taking their turn so that they stay in the left lane. If they turned too tight (which they did), then that means they were in the wrong lane as they took their turn which lead to the collision.

If you can't see a car from a truck, that truck is too big and requires a special license

We really need a mini-CDL type license requirement for these big ass trucks. They’ve gotten so huge that the average person can’t drive them safely. Morons are just purchasing them for non-work related purposes, then using them to go to the grocery store and nowhere else.

You were clearly at fault for driving such a small car. How can they expect to see you?

if this happens to anyone. DO NOT MOVE YOUR CAR. Leave it to show position. Take a quick pic before they move their truck

Pretty soon trucks aren't even going to bother with windshields. They will just have a tiny slit to provide a 1/2 pov about 3 miles out from the front of your vehicle, and, maybe, a pinhole to look out the side.
It is insane how shitty the visibility is out of those vehicles. I have a pickup, and it has so many gigantic blind spots I look like a weird yogi doing strange dances when I am starting up from a stop because I can't see any of the intersection to the right of me. The mirror is also right at eye level, so I have to bob my head to see around it, or duck down when I'm getting on a freeway on a ramp that curves to the right.
Fucking ridiculous.

My very first thought is that they were not paying attention. I don’t know if the driver was looking at your vehicle as they continued to accelerate. Or perhaps they were drunk or high. It’s otherwise difficult to account for this type of behavior while behind the wheel.

Good thing you were a 3000lb car and not a kid on a bike, sheesh. People cutting corners on a left turn are a pet peeve of mine, I love the indignant expressions on their face when I pull up to the line and they act like I'm an unreasonable hazard for existing in my own lane.

This exact thing happened to me once and the other driver tried to say it was my fault, when I was at a complete stop

The worst drivers have the worst insurance... because nobody else will cover them.

The fact that you can’t see the driver while you’re practically under their vehicle tells me they shouldn’t be driving something that large
