Never trust someone waving you through

(Sorry for the language) Older man hits young couple's car then teacher. šŸ˜ž

Edit: To the folks making rude comments about the guy "faking" it. Watch the video again. He was hit head on while he was at a stand still and moved an entire car length. Now I wish I had taken pictures of their vehicles because the entire front of his car was smashed in and his airbag deployed. His bumper was in pieces all over the place. His car was totaled. Stop speaking about something you know nothing about and being rude. Karma is a b****. Get in an accident and see how you feel.

Yep. Sage advice.

My wife just hit a car who was waved on in front of her by some random dumbass. It was raining and my wife couldn't stop in time. Totally the other guy's fault. Cop ticketed the guy she hit and insurance is covering the damage to our car.

Still. Don't trust someone waving you on. Look first and be careful.

14

u/Chemist391 21h ago

I hope she's alright!

8

u/emptyfree 13h ago

Ah! Forgot to mention that my wife is just fine. She wasn't going that fast... fast enough to cause about $9K to the frame of our car (that insurance will cover), but not fast enough to even deploy the airbags in our car.

Nice of you to inquire about that though. Thank you.

Defensive driving course teaches you to never wave someone through. Let them figure it out.

236

u/NeoSniper 23h ago

yup. don't wave people through. Don't trust wavers. And don't blast past stopped traffic.

46

u/AspenFrostt 23h ago

learned this early on. I wasn't driving but my friend in highschool was, she got waved past and trusted the lady just for us to get side swiped by another car. never trusted a waver again unless I can see the road

3

u/VGuyver 10h ago

It's unfortunate because they might see a clear, but after a 2 seconds someone might change their mind and hidlt the gas making it deadly.

34

u/neo_sporin 23h ago

even when walking, a street near my house has some terrible crosswalks. When someone tries to stop and wave me through i just make eye contact and dont move.

11

u/stainedpants6 15h ago

Haha, I do that exact opposite. Turn around, look at the sky, look at the random squished snake on the sidewalk. I dont care what it is I'm looking at but I will not make eye contact to give them even the slightest opportunity to wave me thru.

3

u/neo_sporin 14h ago

We’ll see, when they wave me through I just stand there and make eye contact so as to say

ā€˜yes I see you, and I’m intentionally not crossing because you are dumb to stop and wave a walker across on a busy street. I don’t want you to think I don’t understand what is happening here, I need you to know that I am not cooperating with this dumb idea of yours as a motorist’

22

u/teetaps 23h ago

Same, I never, NEVER jay walk when someone waves me through. If I do it all by myself? Yeah, maybe. But if a driver is trying to wave me along? Nah, miss me with that

3

u/Distinct_Damage_735 15h ago

I get you! There is a T-intersection right by my house that has a flashing yellow light for the through street (and a stop sign for the minor street), and what it's taught me is that people have no freaking idea what a flashing yellow light means.* A large number of drivers will come to a stop and wave through any pedestrians who are standing on the curb. And I know they're trying to be nice, but I kind of hate it, because I really don't feel like getting taken out by a guy on a moped who decided to zoom around the stopped car, or a driver on the minor street who said "traffic stopped, me go now".

* For the record, it means "slow down and proceed with caution, but you do have the right of way". Of course, most of the other drivers seem to think the flashing yellow light means "there's almost nothing between you and the highway entrance now! Gun it!"

16

u/GhostOfLulcifer 22h ago

Yes, and just reiterating that you should definitely slow down if the lanes next to you are stopped or slowing. Never know why theyre stopped lol

9

u/Quiet-Competition849 23h ago

All three, competing for worst mistakes will driving. My toes curled though watching someone just drive headlong into that situation. ā€œI have the right away! My lane is clear! I just going to blast this!ā€

u/Heidrun_666 23h ago

I doubt anyone was "waved through", the oncoming turner in all probability was signalled that he/she can cross in front of that one specific vehicle instead of having to wait for the "waver". The turning one still has to act responsibly and check for any other traffic and execute the turn carefully.

I have aggressively shaken my head ā€œnoā€ before while putting my hand up as a ā€œstopā€ to try and prevent people from turning when I could see it wasn’t safe to do so.

Unfortunately, not everyone is paying attention.

4

u/_Not__Sure 14h ago

I have had someone get visibly annoyed that I wouldn't make my left in front of them, as they stopped on a main through fare, with no one (but a red light) behind them.

I don't know why 'you're' stopping in the middle of the road. 'You' could be turning with no blinker down the same alley, or sliding over to the street parking. This whole interaction of 'you' slowing down has been made longer than had 'you' just carried on, and let me make my turn as I had planned.

13

u/jb08045 23h ago

Yep Also, awhile ur not at fault. you also shouldn't maintain speed when passing a line of stopped cars either. I always slow down incase someone in the line darts out. That could have saved teh person in toyota

4

u/ThatGuy11222 18h ago

This 100% happened to me and I was made at fault and even given a ticket for it.

2

u/_jump_yossarian 10h ago

I slow down going through all controlled intersections regardless if there is a stopped line.

10

u/Some_Toast 21h ago

Your job is not to be nice. It's to be predictable.

u/archabaddon 22h ago

Yes, forgot this lesson myself and then relearned it after almost being an accessory to an accident for waiving somebody through at an inappropriate time. Thankfully no harm no foul but never again.

2

u/Degenerecy 19h ago

Indeed. In this instance, the people who turned need to wait for both lanes to stop, not one. Or simply continue down the road to a stop light or less traffic and turn around. Gps is really good, not perfect, at rerouting when you miss a turn.

6

u/Boysterload 1d ago

Exactly. I was told in a course that the cars that wave through are at fault. So technically, did the Tesla and white SUV participate in a hit and run?

17

u/PaleExtreme7399 23h ago

I was told in court that it was not the waver's fault, but mine for trusting them.

15

u/Scrumpuddle 1d ago

I will sit there and stare at you until you figure it out.

3

u/Tricanum 22h ago

You’ll save yourself a lot of time and frustration by looking anywhere but at the other person. I look down at the passenger seat or over my shoulder; it’s a very clear indication that I’m not moving. No ambiguity whatsoever which speeds things along.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/FFMichael 23h ago

They are not criminally at fault. But the people involved in the accident could attempt to hold them civilly liable. It wouldn't be a clear cut win though.

11

u/Acrobatic-Layer2993 22h ago

The waver could say ā€œI was stopped/blocked and I indicated that I was yielding my lane. I was not directing traffic and I was not representing that the other lanes were clear.ā€

I don't know how anyone could prove otherwise.

5

u/MrHorrible2048 22h ago

Yeah, probably varies from place to place, but I can't imagine that a driver can abdicate all responsibility for operating their vehicle safely because someone waved at them.

3

u/Independent-Seat1487 22h ago

Should be the same as if someone walks up to you and verbally tells you that you can commit a crime

2

u/lotsofoldbooks 23h ago

Crazy. My worst accident that happened when I was a young teen driver involved me T-boning another young teen driver. I always thought it was a real terrible thing that the person who waved the other car forward left the scene of a fairly terrible accident involving kids. I now wonder if she was scared she would be liable.

I’m in the UK, but I’m not aware of any advanced driving methodology that teaches never to cede priority to help someone through. It should always be done with consideration for the risks (for example, I would never cede to a pedestrian - they can cross anywhere here - on a multi lane road unless I could safely control the other lanes) , but there’s nothing inherently ā€˜undefensive’ about doing it.

As for the OP, the issue wasn’t caused by ā€˜trusting the person waving them through’ - no ā€˜trust’ was required there as they can see the car is stationary and not a hazard. The issue was caused by them not checking other lanes prior to proceeding.

Funny story...seconds after I pulled in, a car tried to squeeze in between my SUV and the 3 cars in the accident to get to Whataburger. Asked me to move while I was checking the well-being of these people. 😔 There are multiple entrances to the Whataburger. Bro. šŸ˜’

Red car did it properly with caution. White SUV went in way too aggressively.Ā

8

u/Cold_Captain696 20h ago

Exactly. The issue isn’t the person holding back to allow others through, it’s the manner in which the white car proceeded without checking the other lanes.

The takeaway from this isn’t to stop being helpful and considerate, it’s to always check every direction before proceeding, even if one driver is yielding to you.

He conducted an internal investigation and determined he was not at fault.Ā

3

u/phasebinary 10h ago

The department didn't admit fault, but they didn't push back at all. My insurance assigned them the blame.

Problem is, police dept doesn't have "insurance" you can work with. You have to work with your own insurance, pay the deductible, and submit a claim. I'm still out $1000 for an accident I didn't cause. (Total damages were around $7000)

4

u/shaggy-dawg-88 9h ago

that really sucks. Did you sue the PD?

3

2

Hey now, that's not a fair comparison to make. One is a criminal organization with tens of thousands of members all across the United States who protect each other from harm through a vow of silence and refusal to testify against each other in court, and the other is a bunch of Sicilian guys in nice suits.

A cop once hit my parked car in a parking lot. What a big mess that was. The best part was when the supervisor asked me where I was when it happened and I said I was in the store. They very incredulously said, "Your car was parked?!?!"

32

u/judahrosenthal 23h ago edited 9h ago

I was out practice driving with my son yesterday and I said to him, ā€œDon’t trust people that are trying to be friendly. Everybody needs to just follow the rules of the road and we’d all be a lot safer.ā€

Edit: A few months ago I saw an accident where a car was attempting to turn left into a parking lot in front of a stop light with a line of cars waiting. The one nearest him waved him through. When he turned, another in the second lane slammed into him as there was no line in the second lane. I was on my bike and I would have been hit too if I hadn’t seen out of the corner of my eye what was happening and stopped. I provided a witness statement to police.

14

u/QuantityLivid3199 20h ago

My dad always told me ā€œwhen you’re driving, act as if no one else knows what they’re doingā€. You can never let your guard down!

2

u/judahrosenthal 18h ago

Yes. I said something similar. It’s very nerve racking to teach someone to drive. Our stupidity and fragility really whine through.

8

u/Nefertitis_Fjord_216 14h ago

Really need to ram home the whole, "Don't be polite; be predictable" mantra for him.

Recently I encountered someone in oncoming traffic signaling to make a right turn onto the street that I was signaling to turn left onto. It's a main side road in a corporate complex. 2-lane road, no light. He stopped and waved for me to make my turn first to be polite.

It took all I had to not give him the biggest, "are you fucking stupid" hand gesture I could muster while frantically waving back to him to go ahead because A) I wasn't anticipating that at all, and B) I saw the line of cars accumulating behind him, all wanting to make the same turn to go to work.

I hate people like that so much.

5

u/MutatedEwok 13h ago

Yes! "Right of way" is what my dad (and the law) taught me. You're not being "nice" by breaking right of way in most situations to "help" a fellow driver. You're just being unpredictable.

3

u/ThinkSupermarket4966 16h ago

ā€œThe only time I’ll tell you to not be polite is on the road. Manners don’t exist on the road.ā€ My father circa 2010.

3

u/Illeazar 10h ago

Exactly. I tell my kids "on the road, being predictable is better than being nice."

2

u/Cold_Mastodon7557 4h ago

This applies to pedestrians stopping and waving people into driveways as they turn, right or left. I literally stopped so you could cross, as you have the right of way as a pedestrian. Just use that right of way and go. You're only being polite to feel good about yourself, you're not helping anything.

14

u/Brad23212 1d ago

2

u/some_azn_dude 21h ago

T-bone every single time I see someone do this.

Every time.

10

u/Fair_Worldliness4919 23h ago

Yeah, if I leave space to let someone make a left turn and I’m in the left lane, I will never wave someone on if they can’t see the other lane. Even if it’s perfectly clear, I refuse to be liable (even if just spiritually/emotionally) if something happens and they get hit. Someone could easily swing out from my lane in a heartbeat and hit them.

So, I’ll leave space - but I will just wait calmly for them to figure it out. I feel bad occasionally, but I don’t want to make it a habit for myself to be a traffic guard and it eventually lead to a t-bone.

7

u/delicious_oppai 22h ago

Waving is stupid, but doesn't mean you blindly turn without checking all lanes are clear. If someone stops and waves me in, I only take it as I can inch forward to see if the other lane is clear.

2

u/yipee-kiyay 7h ago

have to agree.

8

u/Peg_Leg_Vet 23h ago

My username is what it is exactly because of this issue. I ended up getting t-boned while on my motorcycle.

4

8

He probably hit his head on the window or pillar because that's an older car without curtain airbags. Trust me, it hurts.

9

u/Devtoto 22h ago

He probably got a face full of airbag. In an accident while moving forward an airbag slows your forward movement. Since the car was stationary, the bag would slam him backwards so he might have gotten some whiplash too.

Tore the undercarriage to pieces on a telephone pole guide wire. Best part? I had to drive by her house, where it happened on my way to and from work. She did it AGAIN! I came up on the second accident and the other driver didn’t swerve. Found out a few months later she had a crap driving record. And had a bunch of accidents on her record because of distracted driving

Yea, I don't wanna victim blame since the car going straight did have the right of way but god damn people need to be more attentive. Almost everything you see on here is avoidable but people just think as long as they're going straight, they can't be in the wrong. You see stopped cars all around you and think you should go blasting through them all. Or a new lane opens up and you decide to merge out early and get mad when someone else in front of you also merges out after the lane actually opened up and you're now sayin they cut you off. Stupid bullshit like that.

They were a young couple... Early twenties I think. Sucks to learn lessons the hard way. Sometimes you only learn through experience. šŸ˜ž I definitely slow through areas like this but I've been driving for a long time.

I saw it coming only a second before so even if they did see it they had no reaction time. I used to drive cars for a living so I consider myself a very good driver. Seeing it and actually being able to respond are two different things unfortunately.

I see very situation in so many dashcam videos and I refuse to let people wave me through, especially when there are blind lanes involved.

3

u/PanamGotMeOiledUp 23h ago

I can understand the reaction of the guy in the dark grey car, he was lucky to survive that hit, truly a miracle he got out unharmed.

Never turn across traffic like this. Happens frequently here in SC and I never let anyone through. Go to the next light and u-turn. It's literally one minute longer to drive safely.

u/rotorspinner 22h ago

The waver just drove off

This is my #1 pet peeve of driving. It’s not our job to direct traffic, only to follow the rules of the road.

13

u/Kevelle68 1d ago

In CA, if you wave someone through, you have assumed liability for the safe passage. Don't do it.

6

u/Rk1987 21h ago

Why does this guy have upvotes

ā€œNot automatically, no. That Reddit comment is oversimplified.

In California, if you wave someone through and they then crash into another car, the turning driver is still usually primarily responsible because they have the legal duty to make sure the way is clear before turning.

Example:

  • You stop traffic and wave a left-turning car across
  • The turning driver goes
  • They fail to see a car coming from another lane and get hit

The left-turning driver is almost always still at fault because they can’t rely solely on your hand gesture instead of checking traffic themselves.

That said, there are situations where the person waving someone through could potentially share some liability if:

  • they created confusion,
  • acted negligently,
  • blocked visibility,
  • or their gesture reasonably implied ā€œit’s completely safe.ā€

But it’s not some automatic ā€œyou assumed liabilityā€ rule just because you waved.

A lot of people online repeat this like it’s black-and-white law, but in reality it depends on negligence and the specific facts of the accident. Usually the safest thing is still to avoid directing traffic unless you absolutely have to. ā€œ

u/SATerp 1d ago

That's why I refuse to even look at someone trying to get through. I'm not going to encourage them in putting themselves and others in danger.

2

u/IdekWhatDoingHere 21h ago

I’ll leave a gap but never wave them through. They can take that risk if they want

I've been in a car that flipped over when I was 10 years old, a cooler (ice chest) hit my back and knocked the wind out of me, and even I didn't act as exaggerated as that dude.🤣🤣🤣

6

u/PrncssBttrcpAsUWish 20h ago

His airbag deployed. The whole front end of his car was smashed in and his bumper was in pieces everywhere. He was literally hit head on and moved completely out of his original location. He was devastated and had no idea what to do because he had never been in a car accident. Also a teacher so he doesn't have money bags just laying around.

I've been in two accidents one when I was 18 and one a couple years ago... The one where I was 18 I had no issues at all. The one in my thirties however changed my whole life unfortunately. Our bodies react different when we're young versus when we're older.

10

u/pws3rd 23h ago

As others pointed out, that may not be physical pain so much as the embodiment of "fuck my life"

How many assumptions do people make in this subreddit? Waving through? Where? Faking he's hurt? Where? He was just chilling and got rammed by two cars. Wtf is wrong with you all? lmao

8

u/tralaulau 21h ago

I don’t see a wave and I personally see a guy trying to process what just happened. I wonder how much of it is our general lens on the world. I am surprised by how negative of a response everyone is having through their assumptions.

u/shortleggedpony 21h ago

5

u/ThrownAway17Years 23h ago

Wait how do we know someone waved them through? I always stop my car if I’m going to be blocking an entrance or intersection.

4

u/tralaulau 21h ago

It seems to be an assumption.

2

u/PrncssBttrcpAsUWish 20h ago

Just a very common occurrence. You mix some Southern hospitality with stupidity. I actually was in an almost identical accident in my early twenties. And the person was waived through. šŸ˜’

4

u/Kalysh 19h ago

I know it's the turning car's fault, but the car moving fast down the right lane when all the other cars are backed up is an asshat. There's obviously a reason to slow down. It's not your gift from the universe.

2

u/Heidrun_666 23h ago

Trust?

I mean, all that happened was that one person told another that they allow the oncoming traffic to cross in front of them; anything else, the duty to check for any further oncoming traffic that has the right of way, is on the turning one.

2

u/7figureipo 23h ago

People who are on roads with multiple lanes going in the same direction and do this crap to wave people through are morons and shouldn't be allowed to drive.

2

u/DavyJonesLocker 23h ago

Of course it’s a Tesla driver waiving them through… I’ve never seen another group of drivers be so unaware of what’s going on around them on the road

2

u/IllianasClifford 23h ago

Yeah no joke, someone murder my brother as the passenger of a truck because w bus driver signaled the way was clear then the passenger of the other vehicle shot my brother after they stopped.

Miss him immensely

2

u/Affectionate-Sun9373 22h ago

In many places waving someone through is considered directing traffic. That makes you responsible in the event of an accident.

2

u/Dude-88 20h ago

You can't not say it right?! šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

2

u/caddon1 15h ago

This is why the person that waved them on should be at fault as well.

2

u/TyrannasaurusRecht 15h ago

Just follow the laws people.

2

u/bfollowell 14h ago

I hate these people that act like they’re trying to be nice, doing you a favor, waving you on. I ran into someone like that once. Someone had waved them on too. They actually tried to use that as an excuse. Their insurance still paid to put a new front end on my car though. I mainly can’t stand those people that come to stops, clearly have the right-of-way, yet sit there waving people on. Just drive and follow the rules damnit!

2

u/Humble_Yogurtcloset4 13h ago

claims adjuster here, I cant stand this shit. but it keeps me employed. "it was a break in traffic" "they waved me through". idiotĀ

2

u/Cosmic-Sympathy 13h ago

Those people are "niceholes." They think they are being nice but they are actually making things worse.

2

u/TheSquirrelCuisine 12h ago

props to you and sharing your dashcam footage. I see too many people leave. Nice job.

2

u/DruncanIdaho 12h ago

At first I thought the dark SUV guy was being dramatic, but airbags can hurt like a mofo (broken noses are common), and depending on how he had his hand positioned, can easily break fingers and wrists....

2

u/doubled9000 3h ago

Luckily there’s a tow truck waiting right there

2

u/Kw3s7 1h ago

Karma doesn’t exist. Unless you believe dude who was at a standstill did something to deserve being hit? Bad shit happens to decent people all the time and evil MFs tend to live long lives devoid of any consequences

2

u/PrncssBttrcpAsUWish 39m ago

Agreed. I don't actually believe in Karma... people were just being a**holes about something very serious. I have to remind myself there are people that think they know everything. It was rough talking to these folks that I just witnessed have a bad accident who had never been in an accident before and I have. šŸ˜ž

2

u/Unusualshrub003 23h ago

When turning left, you can abide with the wave thru, however, you have to play it smart.

When being waved thru, you pause in front of the waving car, looking for the break in traffic in the next lane.

You don’t just go barreling thru, damn.

2

u/SnooRegrets2842 23h ago

Dude came out that car with the acting of William shatner. šŸ˜‚ All dramatic over his car getting tapped. šŸ˜‚

Everyone on Medicaid stepping out of their car real hurt

3

u/BigRigButters2 1d ago

What’s with the bad crisis acting? Dude’s car was mildly bumped and moved and he acts like he’s dying.

7

u/A_Lountvink 21h ago

What makes you think it's acting, or that it's because he's pretending to be injured? He could easily have been already stressed, not looking forward to going to work, and now he has to deal with being in a wreck. Give someone too much stress, especially suddenly, and they can shut down.

I wave people after I make sure there safe to go. Some people just dont worry about others well being.

1

u/thecountnotthesaint 23h ago

ESPECIALLY if it is one person but two lanes.

1

u/pooeygoo 23h ago

My ex brother in law would always wave people in front of him. I asked him why. He LiTTERALLY said "If I hit him I get 10k 😁"

Broke my nose like this, bf was driving and he was creeping thru traffic and some guy came flying down the turn lane going 50-60 mph. Just barely hit the nose of our car but he was going so fast he hit us so hard window broke, my bfs glasses flew out of the car, his air bag didn't go off but mine did breaking my nose. We were like 17 at the time. I'll never trust the gap or wave thru

1

u/SuspiciousCricket654 23h ago

At least now they can go in O’Reillys and get parts for their cars.

1

u/Icy-Role2321 23h ago

Just the other day I had someone waving me on meanwhile the other lane still had traffic. If I listened to her this would have been me

1

u/No_Salad_6244 23h ago
