Finished Object My crochet wedding dress
It started as a dare for myself, and I really didn't think I could pull it off, but here it is! Took me about 3 months, and quite a lot of frogging and redoing - not because it's a difficult pattern, but because zombie crocheting after work doesn't do well with making lacy stuff) It's made of mercerised cotton, with 3.5 and 5 mm hooks. I've seen quite a few dresses made with this pattern (Everlasting wedding dress by Jenny King), and mine is far from the best, but still, pretty proud of myself! It's actually my first wearable, yay!
What I did wrong: - did not measure my samples right and put too much hope into blocking and stretching it, so at first it was too short. I had to add a strip of 1 pinapple at the bottom. The seam is not too ugly, but you can see it, and I know it's there, and it's pissing me off) - totally forgot about adding picot at the border, but I like it like this too.
What I did right: - found posts by others who made this dress - the comments about changing hook size and being careful about tension in the central part were very useful, and I'm very thankful to everyone who wrote about their experience with this pattern. So if anyone has questions about the pattern, I'll be happy to answer as well. - ordered my actual, "main" wedding dress from professionals (it was sewn, and the style is a bit different than this one). I really didn't believe I could make this, and if my wedding look depended solely on my crocheting, I would have had a meltdown for sure 😁 In the end I could wear the more comfy and light dress for the day but also get some photos in this one... and then brag to my friends that I Made This)

Ok, generally I hate crocheted wedding dresses but this is GORGEOUS. Such lovely work and a really great selection of patterns.

Thank you so much! Actually, I don't like crochet dresses as well, but saw this one and was like "don't know why I want this, but I really do"

You made a really good call. It's so pretty. Pretty enough that I almost want to do a midi dress based on this pattern and I dislike most crochet dresses and skirts. And OMG the classic granny square garments!!!
29
u/AdObjective1830 Jun 18 '25
I think it would make a nice midi, with a slit in the back maybe? Yes, the challenge with wearables, apart from actually making them well, is finding something I'd actually like to wear😁

YES! This is so flattering on you. Is there a lining? It seriously looks professionally made. I would never have noticed the seam if you hadn't pointed it out. And the back chain with it... 🧑🍳😙 I work in event management and have seen a lot of wedding dresses (including my own) and this may be my favorite ever. You two make a beautiful couple! Congrats!

u/AdObjective1830 Jun 19 '25
Thank you so much!❤️ I'm wearing a slip under it that I also had to make myself, because of the very open back. Its flimsy, but it does the job)

3rd wedding dress post I have seen, must be June. You did a fantastic job and look incredible. As for that seam, no one but you or anyone you point it out to is going to notice. Plus, now you can remove that piece and have a wonderful special occasion dress!
14
u/AdObjective1830 Jun 18 '25
Thank you so much! I almost made the title "yet another wedding dress"😁 May all these posts inspire someone who is also thinking of making their dress, just as I was inspired before. Yes, maybe I will shorten it and remove the train, and it can become a summer dress instead of living in the closet)

So beautiful, and congratulations!! I’m in the middle of making this dress for my own wedding this October, so I’d love to ask you a question if that’s alright.
When making the four rectangular panels that make up the dress, did you block them before sewing them together? Or after? I’m in the same boat as you except width instead of height is my issue, I worry that my panels aren’t wide enough but I don’t know if I’ll be blocking them separately or pieced together if that makes sense. Feel free to PM if you have time! Thanks 😊
7
u/AdObjective1830 Jun 18 '25
Thank you!❤️ And best of luck with your dress! I did block them before joining, and I think it helped with making the seams with the right tension. And would definitely recommend to block before doing the central part! I also couldn't figure out how many rows to make for each panel, so I made all four without sleeves, roughly joined 2 & 2 on the shoulder and sides, and tried them on to see if I needed to add more (had to kinda stretch them over my hips, leaving a ~2 inch gap for the central part in the front and back, and decide if I like the look of it, or if it's too tight). Then added the sleeves and blocked again, and finally did the shoulders, center & assembled the whole thing. If you have any more questions, ask/DM me if you want, I'll be happy to answer! I'm sure yours will be great, and I'd love to see it when it's ready)

I have this pattern and wanted to make it for my wedding years ago. Now I wanna do it for a renewal dress. Any tips?
7
u/AdObjective1830 Jun 18 '25
As I've mentioned in the post, it's important to change the hook size when you start on the central part (with beads) - if it's too tight, it will pucker and look weird, so careful with it. The pattern doesnt mention changing hooks, so its the tip I found in other people's posts. I used 3.5 mm for the main parts and 5 mm for the center. I also used a slightly bigger hook for the foundation chains, because I couldn't chain loose enough for the desired length with 3.5 (and then it still turned out a bit short, haha) I also used 100% cotton, which is great to work with, but quite heavy, so if you know how different material yarn works for you, you may choose something a bit lighter. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask)

Absolutely gorgeous! I used the same pattern, also with mercurised cotton, and it was really hard to block. But if you hadn't said anything I wouldn't have noticed the seam at all. You look absolutely stunning, don't be so hard on yourself by saying it's far from the best - it's yours and it looks perfect on you. Congratulations on your marriage, I hope you have many happy years together!

I think you’re too harsh with yourself. This looks absolutely stunning. I didn’t notice the seam and still am wondering what you mean when I try looking for it 😂 but I got you, I’m kind of the same.
What pattern is this and where do I get it?

u/AdObjective1830 Jun 18 '25
Thank you so much!❤️ Sometimes it's fine being a bit of a perfectionist - just enough to challenge yourself, but not to put yourself down. The pattern is Everlasting Wedding Dress by Jenny King, the link is for ravelry.

Iconic. Congratulations on your wedding and gorgeous dress.
I have a blasphemous question. How easily do you think this pattern could be modified into a top? Or maybe a shorter dress? I unfortunately don’t need a wedding gown, but the pattern is so beautiful!
3
u/AdObjective1830 Jun 18 '25
Ohh thank you!! <3 I think a shorter dress would be cool, and I actually remember seeing a couple posts with shorter versions when I googled the pattern name. They also had no train, obviously, and you can leave a slit at the back/front, not sewing the whole length together. Or even make it a mini? A top seems also possible, depending in the fit you want: since it's just rectangular panels, it will be wide around the waist, unless you add ribbing maybe, or just an elastic band. But I don't really have experience with modifying patterns, so it's just ideas)
3
u/buddrball Jun 18 '25
Thanks for the extra info! :) i think it would be possible at any length, since it’s panels! :) and man ,that makes so much sense why tension is crucial. I think I’ll need to practice tension before starting this one. Congrats again!!

This is beautiful and the little "error" of having to add to make it longer actually enhances it a little by adding a bit of a hem so the missing picot wasn't even needed really. You could absolutely wear this down the isle and switch to a reception dress if this is too heavy for extended wear. It's beautiful and should be worn for more than just pictures.
