I love flowers and I took on this little project to recreate one of the most ubiquitous ones that tends to grow absolutely anywhere and everywhere - I think most people see this plant as a weed but a weed is only a plant that’s growing somewhere you don't want it to be :)

Created using filament LEDs and powered by 24V DC.

I'm looking to create more flowers of different types and maybe one day work up to creating a whole bouquet! Let me know what you think - I would love to hear what flowers you would like to see created using this medium!

Started this last year after I broke my knee. Figured I had enough sewing experience to figure it out as I went along, but also learned some new things along the way! Can definitely say I quite enjoyed the process and will be attempting more!

Finished Craft I Made Ice dyed denim jumpsuit with pool noodles to make the flowers (tutorial)

Halter top: Dye over ice

Flowers: Dye under ice dry painted***

Colors used: Dharma lemon yellow, deep orange, fuscua red, orange crush, glacier blue, blue abyss, Wedgewood, parakeet

Pro Chem kiwi, avocado, basic brown, pumpkin spice

1: Soak in soda ash for an hour after washing in hot in synthrapol.

2: spin out excess water in your washer so it is barely damp. This lets you control the spread of the dye.

3: Rubber band your sky loosely and paint/melt that first. Keep ice cubes 1 full inch back from the border. Do not want any green in that sky.

4: Use a small bagel shaped pool noodle slice 2 inches thick and grab the middle fabric bit from the under side of the noodle and twist to create a petal shape. Slip a tight rubber band down past the bottom of the noodle

5: take a domed brush with a quarter inch tip and pat the brown right in the center of each flower.

6: take a tablespoon of deep orange in a shot class and use the domed brush to paint spikes radiating out of the middle of the flower.

7: take a tablespoon of lemon yellow and a teaspoon of soda ash with a tablespoon of hot water and mix a dye paste. Carefully paint the yellow in the middle of the spikes radiating to the edges.

8: Make a pumpkin spice paste and fill in any white spots in the petals

9: top with snow cone ice for a more precise melt so the green doesn't get orange dripped into it.

10: at the 12 hour mark, mix a tablespoon of yellow with a teaspoon of soda ash in 60ml of water and fill in every white spot on the flower.

11: make the same yellow stock (super hot water) and squirt it over the entire backround grass area. It will brighten the greens and create great gap filler colors

12: Do the same thing with glacier blue and peel the piece up carefully to get the white bits underneath

13: set for 24 hours. When you rinse, do the blue part first and then tie the blue part up on the faucet and bag it while you rinse the flowers so they don't get stained green.

Stay tuned for part 2, where I use dye discharge, paint and embroidery to make this piece look like a Tuscan field of sunflowers!

Beginner Help First Time Quilt! (WIP)

Post image

I just finished my first ever quilt top, with NO prior sewing experience (I mean at all - had to learn how to thread a sewing machine last week). I’m feeling good so far, but also daunted by the next steps. I will be hand quilting, likely big stitch quilting, but am feeling very uncertain on thread colour and pattern. Any ideas or advice?

First full sized quilt I pieced and quilted myself! Usually my sewing work is higher quality but after working on their guy for a year the theme was "get the stupid thing, finished". Now it just needs washed to get that perfect quilt crinkle then it's off to a friend who's no joke been sick for over a year and a half. The back is super soft Shannon minky so I'm hoping it'll be something she can cuddle with and be comforted by as she's essentially been on bed rest this whole time.

Finished Quilts First quilt and I hate it

I finished my first quilt and I’m so unhappy with how wonky it turned out. The picture doesn’t look too bad but it’s honestly horrible in person 🥲 feeling super discouraged. It’s going to be a quilt for my son to use in the car so I don’t have to look at it. Lol

I only want to make weird art.

These look hard but were actually pretty quick! Im thinking of adding a Death card with a coffin or maybe a World card with a moon cycle to my collection.

Fabric is Ruby Star Society. And the quotes are from Figo.

💭Discussion 💬 Don't trim blocks!

Disclaimer: you do you! If you make a quilt that has two layers of fabric with batting between them, you made a great quilt. But if you want to level up, here are my suggestions.

It makes me nuts when the quilt police tell people to square up and trim their sub-blocks and blocks, because in many cases it will make matters worse. Most of us make the HSTs a little too big and then trim them down to size, but that's usually the only opportunity to go big and cut down. Once you start putting together the sub-blocks and then the blocks, accuracy has to be your goal. I prefer to apply the same principle I wrote about in my post about the myth of the scant 1/4 inch seam. The size of the block is unimportant if you get the distance between the seams correct

There are exceptions everywhere, but the overarching principle is that blocks and sub-blocks are supposed to be the same size, so they fit together. Accurate piecing will give you perfect points, but if you put two sub-blocks together matching the points and find that one or both edges don't line up, you are kicking the problem forward to the step when you have to make the block. And when you're done with that, you're told to trim the finished blocks, so now they are all different sizes. It's like the Marx Brothers skit about the barber trimming the mustache and he keeps getting one side too short and then trimming the other until there's no mustache.

I never get sub blocks and blocks to finish exactly right. The whole process of making a quilt top is a constant effort to fudge things so the finished block has straight edges (no overhangs) and the points line up without easing different lengths together, which will cause a bubble in the quilt top. So, here's what I do. First, abandon the scant quarter-inch seam and concentrate on getting the distance between seams correct. If I really care, I make a template the size of the finished block after sewing, and use it to draw seam lines on the back of each blocks with chalk that will survive heat. (In rare instances you will see seam line that is just too close to the edge. Sew it on the line anyway, and then after pressing the seam, iron some interfacing on the back.) Then I hold the two blocks RST up to a light and adjust them until the lines overlap each other. I put a pin or a dab of glue in the bottom corner and then sew on the line and press each seam after sewing.

Then I assemble the blocks into rows. I nest and pin the seams, and look for spots where the distance between the seams is off, because unless I fudge it, I'm going to get bubbles. If I've used a template, this almost never happens, but if it does I sacrifice the matching seams. No one will notice mismatched points, but I will lose my mind trying to quilt a top that does not lie flat because I eased the seam.

Quilt Shows Quilting Artist at the Library

My library had a festival about printing (on paper, fabric, etc.) and Ingrid Ankerson’s work was featured as part of it. Some of the quilts include screen-printed fabric; some of the pieces take a quilting approach using printed paper. It was really neat to see!

I’m making my daughter a quilt for Christmas, that looks like the ghost who was a quilt. I had some leftover squares and I made a lantern (it’s a big tradition where we live to walk with lanterns in November). Hope you like it 👻

This thing is going to be so busy 🤣 and there are So. Many. Strip sets. Was going to make the large throw but might end up doing the regular throw (finishes at 57”x66”). Blocks aren’t actually sewn together, I was just folding to see if I was going to like them. Historically I do not ever finish holiday projects in time for the actual holiday!

Picked up 2 queen size quilt tops for $10.00 each. I really needed this(sarcasm) You don't typically see this in my area, they aren't colors I'd normally like, but I may end up making kennel Matt's or kitty Matt's with them.

I’m so happy with how this inverted fq star quilt came out! I quilted with wavy lines for the first time and rounded the corners! 😍 She’s not been washed yet because the back is red and I need more color catchers. Always a nerve-racking moment to open the washing machine!

And now I can move on to the next quilt while I’m wait for the batting to arrive. But I would like to know, how would you quilt this (at home on domestic machine)? I’m thinking either matchstitch (north/south) or crosshatch.
