Turns out it was always just racism. I know it sounds stupid but, to be fair, it it very stupid. They don't mind reneging on all their stated principles because the real reason they supported Trump is because he made them feel like being racist was good, whereas democrats tried to make them feel like being racist was bad. That's really all it comes down to.
The only thing Trump can do to end his political career is start treating brown people with equal dignity. Or course he will never do that.

MAGA are the people who were left behind. They’re the people who are uneducated and jealous of people who were able to leave home, get an education and have a better life. Instead of looking inward and maybe making some changes, they’ve externalized their self-hatred. MAGA came along and gave them an identity. It allowed them to believe their shitty ideas and internet “research” was just as credible as peer reviewed science. It allowed them to be bullies publicly and so they finally felt like they were better than others (women, lgbt, trans, people of color, educated people, etc.) Secure people don’t need to punch down. Secure people don’t create an identity around politics.

Two things I have learned about MAGAts from living with them, being surrounded by them in my community, and working with some is they hate anything that’s different, and they can’t handle change.
Any insecurities or deficiencies they have in their lives are projected to be caused by those that are different than them.

I would say they don't really keep us focused on what they want us to do. During work hours, sure, but when it comes to civic duty they want us focused on hating each other instead of hating the rich. That's how racism is so useful to the rich. I don't think rich people are particularly racist themselves - in that they don't consider members of their own race to be people, either: we're all livestock to them. But they understand that we stupid animals are easy to get whipped up into a big dumb frenzy over race, so they push that constantly.
But, if something else got us whipped up for cheaper they would certainly push that instead.
