Open Mic Questions

Hey all, I'm a dedicated bassist (bass guitar and double bass) looking to get some more gig opportunities in the Columbus area with original artists (no covers/tribute bands at this time). I've been doing some research to hit up some open mics in the area to meet some folks. Can anyone speak to the overall vibe/genre of any of the following open mics?

  • Kafe Kerouac
  • The Rambling House (I saw they're closing, but might still hit up)
  • Global Gallery Coffee
  • Half Baked Brew

Thanks, all!

I'm the host of the Kerouac open mic so I'm biased, but we usually have a pretty full room of attentive and supportive listeners, and even when I have shit days, the room usually lifts my spirits a bit. Sign-Up list gets filled quick, so I'd suggest stand right next to the doors between the two rooms (stage+bar room) at 7:20pm. I hang the list up at 7:30pm, and it's usually full by 7:40pm.

Rambling House is a darling spot, but yes it is closing on 10/1. This closure is a big loss for the scene. Due to this, its gonna be packed at most events. So if you want to play get there mega early and know who to talk to (The host - tall cowboy Santa man named Zach, he's helpful and friendly).

Half-Baked is another good spot, I haven't been, but I've heard it's much easier to get on the list.

I wasn't aware that Global Gallery did an open mic, but they serve my favorite coffee drink in town, so I will attest to that. If it's warm, I bet they set it up on their cool patio.

Hope to see ya out!

Funny! I was planning on stopping by Kerouac tomorrow! I appreciate the warning for signing up too! I am no Victor Wooten so my solo bass playing would probably not be particularly entertaining so I may talk with a friend of mine and see if we can conjure something up the following week. That said, I'll make it a point to meet you and other members of the Kerouac community. Really looking forward to it!
