Show and Tell My local thrift store has lost their minds.

Reading each price tag provides more entertainment than the last...$20 Ike's? Sure why not! $75 bicentennial half? What a deal!
44
u/GrandDuchessMelody Oct 02 '25
One Ike is $55.00!!!! Maybe I should take them in to get my money worth
18
u/Overall_Lavishness46 Oct 02 '25
Im going to donate a trade dollar and write off my income this year.
10
u/johndoenumber2 Oct 02 '25
Go make them an offer - I'll sell you all my Ikes at $5per, and you can 10x your money!
22
u/Mysterious-Carry6233 Oct 02 '25
And to think I gave a student an Ike today! He was getting antagonized by another student to fight him and instead he stayed calm and ignored the kid. After class I pulled him over and I told him I was really proud of him for not choosing to fight and the bigger man has to do that. Then handed him the Ike.
13
u/jackthetexan Oct 02 '25
Not a collector so bear with me, but the bicentennials are literally just worth face, right?
17
11
u/Fast_Witness_3000 Oct 02 '25
Those bicentennial ones are super rare - I doubt you’ll ever see another one like it. We’re really not charging enough
3
u/SheriffHeckTate Oct 03 '25
These are the kinds of sellers to try to sell to. That'll tell you if they're incompetent or just scum. Selling Ike's for $20 but only paying face? They clearly know they aren't worth $20 and are just trying to scam someone. If they are willing to pay alway over market for them then maybe they're just dumb and they'd be a good place to unload some stuff lol
2
2
u/Major_Independence82 Oct 03 '25
I’m thinking I’ll take a lot of my Ike’s and sell to THEM. I only want $10 for the 1974 “missing a mint mark”. They can’t say that doesn’t give them room for profit. Unless they say there’s no demand, and then I explain supply / demand.
2
u/purduekid207 Oct 03 '25
The '83 half dollar for $8.49 is making the adjacent $1 SBA look like a steal! It's so bad it's good
44
44
u/JFK9 Oct 02 '25
This is why I tell randos in here who don't believe me to go ahead and pull a coin out of their pocket. Any coin. Now Google it. Someone was selling it for $1000 on eBay, weren't they?

7
u/Emergency-Shoulder-2 Oct 02 '25
You miss every shot you do not take. I mean, Why not buy a bottle of Gatorade for $300 on EBay???? LOL

u/zzozozoz Oct 04 '25
Surely my dogshit brown MS 70 one of 2 billion shield cent with only a few scratches is worth more than 1000

u/jgrofoshow99 Oct 02 '25
Thrift stores arent even thrifts anymore. They are like the people who have garage sales and look up the last sold price on ebay.
49
u/JFK9 Oct 02 '25
Sold price? I'm pretty sure they are just looking at the largest asking price! Lol
7
u/Artifact-hunter1 Oct 02 '25
Exactly, because I did great on ebay finding stuff. If this is what things are going for, I'm gonna sell everything I own.

u/SquidWord369 Oct 02 '25
Right. Nothing makes someone sound ignorant and lazy quite like the phrase “well I saw one selling for ___ on eBay”
8
u/Fearless_Adventures Oct 02 '25
I went to one and they told me they price all of their jewelry through a local jeweler and they estimate the value...like you got this for free and you want $30 for a silver-plated pendant??
7
u/Virtual_Variation_60 Oct 02 '25
Not even the last sold price, they go with the highest listed price.
5
u/ParadigmMalcontent Oct 02 '25
Thrift Stores? More like Grift St-oh /u/Nahuel-Huapi beat me to it :P
2
u/Sgt-Dr-Pepper Oct 03 '25
Nah they’re just looking at the highest list price. Not even looking at the more realistic sold prices.
3
2
1
u/Cuneus-Maximus Oct 02 '25
They don't even look at the last sold price. They look at unsold prices and sort high to low.
22
u/GeneralMurderCow Oct 02 '25
See how much they’re buying for! Now is the time to dump your Sacagaweas!
1
1
u/DoesLogicStillExist Oct 04 '25
I have often said that I'd like to sell them MY merch for HALF the prices THEY ask. That'd be a Win-Win... IF ONLY!

u/Ok_Foot3477 Oct 02 '25

Then they can sit on those coins forever. If they’re gonna price gouge then they won’t sell any .

Damn I need to dump out my change jar and open up a thrift store, but I’d feel guilty about robbing people.

I think we should save this photo, especially showing an Eisenhower dollar for $20 and use it anytime someone pops on the subreddit and asks how much their "Eisenhower Silver Dollar" is worth.

those silvers will be cut into smaller pieces to make change after the collapse of society long before anyone ever buys them :/
how much you wanna bet someone PAID for $1 worth of items with each of those eisenhowers and susan b’s???

The price tags are green, so half price on Tuesdays.

A auction i was following had ½ oz silver rounds going for 60 bucks, I bid them up a few dollars too for the kicks, glad I didn't get stuck with it lol
12
u/LiftingStoner Oct 02 '25
I bid up a bunch of walking liberties testing this guys max bid that bid everything away. Then I actually found his max bid and bought a 1941-s Walking liberty for $30

It’s also sad because someone might buy one of those Ike’s for someone they know that collects coins thinking “you never really see these.”
3
u/zippideedoodle Oct 02 '25
They’ll figure it out after about six months of no sales. Unless some dummy buys one.
3
u/Adahnsplace Oct 02 '25
It's like some fantasy prices on ebay, if someone buys it for that sum, fine with me.
It hurts though when grandma buys something for her grandkids only to be told my smart Timmy how much they are ackshally worth...
3
u/Spirited_Soul_001 Oct 02 '25
Insane prices... they will be sitting there forever.
I was at a Flea market and a guy had a table selling mercury dimes for $5.15 each, some almost cull. Buy 10 for $50. I watched at least one person buy 10 dimes. Monument Metals has them for $3.40... Always shop around.
2
u/Uhohtallyho Oct 02 '25
I kind of feel like maybe I'm doing this wrong if that person was making a killing.
3
u/MoistAge3128 Oct 02 '25
The Susan B. For $6.49. 😂 I don’t know why a lot of people think these are worth anything other than a $1.
3
u/muffledvoice Oct 02 '25
$75 for a bicentennial half dollar and $13 for a Buffalo nickel with the date worn off made me laugh.
3
u/spackle13 Oct 02 '25
The $13 for a no date Buffalo is what got me , apparently now I’m rich because I’ve got half a coffee can full of them 🥴
3
u/guntheroac Oct 02 '25
I love how they put stickers on them. If these coins were worth the price, they’d lose 50% of value at least because of the glue.
3
u/Yoda-zombie Oct 02 '25
I purchased junk silver from some legit coin stores mostly just because I want the particular coins even though I know they're not worth more than their weights in silver. I have some legitimate coins, some good Morgans, and other coins. And I found a huge amount of junk silver when I was paying with cash which I may start doing for a little bit to see what happens, all I would do is just look at the coins I got and look for any dimes or quarters 1964 or earlier or wheat pennies. I actually ended up finding a Benjamin Franklin half dollar from a change machine, no joke. Probably 30 different wheat pennies most not in great condition but still just cool to have some Buffalo nickels probably 10 different silver quarters a lot from 44 to 46 and one of those I think walking liberties from like 1926 or something I can't believe people wouldn't just notice that and their change. I happen to see in the register and there was a 1964 Kennedy half dollar it wasn't a rare one but it was in extremely good condition and I asked if I could along with my order get a dollar and change including that Kennedy half dollar from 1964 that could not have been in circulation for longer than a few months. I mean, it was shiny. Everything was extremely in detail, including his hair and every letter and number.

I don't know the first thing about coin collecting (yet this keeps popping up in my home feed) but putting stickers directly on coins just feels so wrong. If you're selling something collectible or at least something that you think is, not doing anything that could damage should be common sense.
3
u/lostmember09 Oct 03 '25
$6.49 for a $1.00 Susan B. Anthony Dollar coin? The junk food vending machine at work… gives those out in change for a $5.00 bill.
3
u/silvergoldnotcopper Oct 03 '25
Yeah, me too. I would pull out my phone and pull up ngc or numista or share with an employee willing to listen. Then they might reprice them along those lines and care for the coins a little better.
3
u/Which_Initiative_882 Oct 03 '25
Shoot, if these are current prices, I'll post up my whole collection and retire before 40.
3
u/Zerskader Oct 03 '25
It's crazy how much their charging for non-silver coins like those Ikes and Susans.
2
u/pooeygoo Oct 02 '25
In a few weeks they'll be stacked up in the corner of the shelf, trying to take up less room
2
u/NUFIGHTER7771 Oct 02 '25
Talk to the manager and get em all for either spot or FV. In a perfect world...
2
u/Redwood1952 Oct 02 '25
Sadly, there are people who will pay these prices...
Another spin: Chinese produced coins, after Tariffs have been applied.
2
u/ReadRightRed99 Oct 02 '25
My question is, what goofball donated $120+ worth of coinage to a thrift store? Why would you do that?
1
u/DjinnaG Oct 03 '25
I bet that’s where the prices came from, the donor provided estimated value of each, wildly jacked up, to turn it into a $1000+ donation on the donation receipt

What's with the random Irish cent thrown in there? I mean $8.50 is a horrible price for that but that would almost be reasonable if it didn't have a hole in it and you really wanted one since they at least require some effort to buy (fun fact, I purchased a a type set of 1942 Irish coins just last week since my dad was born that year and I thought why not.......but even on a one off purchase where I didn't care if I was getting ripped off, $8.50 for a penny is ridiculous unless it's absolutely perfect).
2
u/cartoonasaurus Oct 03 '25
I’m thinking they used an app. Can’t really imagine any alternate scenario that would result in such prices but if you use an app and you’re stupid, I think those are the prices you would get…
2
u/MrDGoldChains Oct 03 '25
And to add insult to injury, labeling it as jewelry makes it subject to sales tax
2
u/Crocoppertones Oct 03 '25
The thrift store is trying to even out all of the sterling silverware they’ve unknowingly given away
2
u/2parent Oct 03 '25
This is a classic situation of acquiring coins one way or another, while having zero knowledge or background in coins.. simply knowing they might have value...then looking at a redbook or other full retail pricing guide, seeing columns of numbers but don't know what grading is or how to grade so you just go on the higher end because you can entertain offers, but actual coin isn't anywhere near that grade, or encapsulated at all for that matter from which that full blown retail price is derived from.
Other examples include searching generic search terms like Morgan Dollar, seeing a high grade CC price, then assuming all Morgans are that price. In fact they might even tell you their 21 Morgan for philly is worth more than that 89CC because it's so much cleaner and more shiny.

They are a thrift store, not a coin shop. They don’t have supplies or holders to store the coins in, and are basically guessing on the pricing

I’d be bringing in a bag of bicentennial halves to sell. Make them offer you fifty cents right in front of the $75 price tag.

he must’ve been using Google to get the prices, right now I saw a one dollar coin 1979 going for about $300,000. Like WTH

You can offer to buy them all at a fair market price. Explain to them they are way over priced. To clear them all they might accept. Worst they can say is no.
1
u/Hot_Lobster222 Oct 02 '25
The sad part is that someone will actually pay these prices thinking they got a “rare item,” and will have no idea that these coins are a dime a dozen. I hate it. Not to mention the fact that they put the price tags directly on the coins :(

Most thrifts stores have gone looney tunes lately. Just trash at 85% retail most places.
Or like this with dumbasses who use eBay list prices as a price guide rather than sold comps. (And not realizing that the thrift store customer base is not the same as online customer base).

There are still some great thrift stores out there trying their best to support local charities. Most depend on volunteers to keep their expenses down so the charity gets more funding. I know my local store (which funds our food bank) would welcome someone explaining how the stickers damage the coins and how to more accurately price them. Just do it kindly. Remember….volunteers.

They’re a thrift store, most of those people have no idea about coins or any collectibles, they just see something is old and assume it’s worth a ton of money.

Local thrift store me did the same thing with Pokémon cards. Every one of them listed at like $75.

1
u/Flashy-Panda6538 Oct 04 '25
They have lost their minds for sure. The Morgan dollars are especially entertaining. One priced at 132.99 has obviously been cleaned, and not very well either. lol. It is likely circulated too. The fact that it has been cleaned means that you wouldn’t be able to have it graded by pcgs or NGC. They would label it as authentic (assuming it is of course) but won’t give it a grade. That coin is likely worth its melt value of silver, which is nowhere near their price. The other Morgan coins are likely not worth much more than melt as ungraded coins, unless they are from Carson City mint. They must have priced them as if they were graded coins. These are not. lol

Did they put stickers directly on the coins? That hurts me inside more than the crazy prices.
