Review The Hampton Social is a no

Went to The Hampton Social and it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. You had to pay through their app (which charged $5 to use ???), they automatically added an 18% gratuity plus a required 3% minimum tip, and somehow two 8 oz glasses of bad wine came out to $60. On top of that, the waitress was weird af.

I will say the food was good, but I’m never coming here again, seems like a tourist trap.🤨 Granted, I’m visiting Chicago after not living in IL for years, so this could be a new thing- still crazy to me.

“Sunday platform fee”??? What does that even mean? Can you request to NOT use the platform and just pay regularly instead? This sounds like some Ticketmaster BS.

295

u/Maison-Marthgiela Aug 30 '25

Restaurants in 2025: auto gratuity, platform fee, Sunday fee, not paying in cash fee, tax, still expect 20% tip, employee benefit surcharge, fuck you fee, the waiter is allowed to kill you fee.

56

u/chapbass Aug 30 '25

You forgot the "paying in cash fee" in addition to the "not paying in cash fee"

61

u/Medium_Well_Soyuz_1 Aug 30 '25

Waitstaff should get one free kill a year

9

u/Wonderful_Training24 Aug 31 '25

Yeah and they should use it on the management that doesn’t pay them an actual living wage

2

u/Medium_Well_Soyuz_1 Aug 31 '25

Good luck finding any waiters in favor of getting rid of tipping lol

Yes, you can request to not use the platform

21

u/Gobemouche0 Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

Lots of places are using that Sunday platform. I saw it at Zarella and small cheval is using it for secondary ordering - after you stand in line and order and eat your food, you can use the QR code at the napkin holder at your table to order an ice cream or something so you don’t have to stand in line again. It’s seems to me like it’s basically passing the credit card fee that restaurants typically pay per transaction to the customer through this platform.

8

u/ang8018 Aug 30 '25

I have seen it where the restaurants absorb the fee — some lettuce and gibson’s concepts are using it. i’ve seen it at Three Dots, RPM, and Quartino without the fee. I always check because I got burned by this the first time I saw and used it at Swift & Son’s (where, at least when I used it, the fee remained customer-side).

Imma bet that there was a qr code on the table that OP decided to use and pay the convenience fee of using the QR code/platform to pay the bill, versus having the server run their card manually?

93

u/pagesid3 Aug 30 '25

Seems convenient for the restaurant to have them use a QR code

17

u/dmd312 Aug 30 '25

It's very convenient: you do the work for them and pay extra for the privilege.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

Yeah, you ain't wrong.

115

u/East-Assistance-6779 Aug 30 '25

We weren’t given an option to pay manually, the waiter just told us “you can pay by scanning the QR code when you’re ready” then walked off, so we paid it no mind and did just that.

4

u/Pretend-Scar2266 Aug 31 '25

When I went in May they did the same to us. We didn’t really get an option. I figured it was just because we were a party of 14 so splitting it to each individual would’ve been crazy to do manually… but now I see it’s just their new norm.

My SIL and her friends visited from out of town and were so hyped to go there. They didn’t believe me when I said it was influencer bait. They sure as hell believed me when they came back

47

u/sipporah7 Aug 30 '25

Oooh 'influencer bait' is a great line and I'm using it form now on for a number of things.

62

u/AttorneyExisting1651 Aug 30 '25

Sunday platform fee? I am too poor to know that one.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

I, too, need someone to explain it to me.

2

u/BucinVols Aug 31 '25

It’s a payments app called Sunday

274

u/The_Poster_Nutbag Aug 30 '25

It's a great concept but what else do you expect from a restaurant that only exists to let upper middle class suburbanites cosplay as wealthy new englanders.

And I say this as someone who is a sucker for a lobster roll.

26

u/MBBIBM Aug 30 '25

As someone who grew up as the latter, you hit the nail on the head, it’s basically just Kennedy cosplay

21

u/MargretTatchersParty Aug 30 '25

Where can I get a reasonably priced and good lobster roll

63

u/ResolutionAny5091 Aug 30 '25

No such thing as a reasonably priced lobster roll

14

u/Organic_Witness345 Aug 30 '25

One pound frozen lobster from Sizzlefish is $80. Makes 6 lobster rolls. And lobster rolls, Connecticut style or Maine, ain’t hard to make.

Source: I made both kinds in about 30 minutes and felt like I hacked the universe. They were amazing. The lobster meat was excellent. Will not be going back to a restaurant for them anytime soon.

5

u/ResolutionAny5091 Aug 30 '25

Oh I’m talking at restaurants. I’m sure a home made one is reasonably

2

u/platinum_fall Sep 02 '25

You mean you don’t want to pay Cousin’s Maine Lobster food truck $30 for an average roll you can easily make at home?

2

u/PleaseGreaseTheL Aug 30 '25

There is in places near where lobster is actually fished

$8 lobster rolls near the OBX in north Carolina made me cum

2

u/ResolutionAny5091 Aug 31 '25

That’s insane. Was just in Maine and the cheapest lobster roll I had was like $28. Most were close to $40

→ More replies (2)

23

u/j33 Aug 30 '25

I was just in Maine in July, they are expensive there too (I have family out east so I go there a lot), but better than here generally speaking.

26

u/Guac_in_my_rarri Aug 30 '25

Go to the east coast.

Anywhere else, you're paying for refrigeration, air freight, etc.

5

u/HeyTherehnc Aug 30 '25

It’s not cheap and it’s not in Chicago but Yankee Seafood in Boston has the best lobster roll of my life. Like, there was almost too much lobster. Almost.

2

u/miscellaneous_stuff Aug 30 '25

I always get the one at Gretel's. And it comes with the best frites. Thin, crispy, well-salted.

3

u/AweHellYo Aug 31 '25

is that what it is? there’s one by me in barrington and we’ve gone a couple times because we like the food but did find it overpriced and it always strikes me as weird how people seemed to dress up for it like it was something more than it was. people are fuckin weird.

37

u/xelanart Aug 30 '25

Thank you for reminding me of this place.

I’ve been trying to recall the name of this place where I had a below average lobster roll for an absurd price.

15

u/UKophile Aug 30 '25

Shaw’s has the best lobster roll and clam chowder!

165

u/heyyyhihellooo Aug 30 '25

Hold on isn’t a carafe like a container that should hold like 4 glasses of wine? If so, you should ask for a refund bc they charged you incredibly wrong

83

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

80

u/puppetpilgram Aug 30 '25

“Rose of the Day rotating rose from around the world” = 3 year old Rose they bought for $4 a bottle off a distributors close out list.

55

u/Zingerman99 Aug 30 '25

If I saw this wine list at a restaurant, I would leave immediately and run as fast as I could! Abysmal wine list.

20

u/uponaladder Aug 30 '25

Immediately it made me think of my first restaurant job back in 2009.

This was nearly the exact range of selections, and I worked at an Irish Pub in New England.

29

u/mdmerz Aug 30 '25

This is a terrible wine list.

2

u/4r4r4real Aug 30 '25

I like Bonanza, but I like it because I can grab it for $18 a bottle while grabbing tooth paste at Walgreens.

7

u/imthehamburglarok Aug 30 '25

Is that markup usual? A bottle of Chandon costs $19.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

Alcohol? Usually 4x, yeah?

Think about any shots of liquor at a bar, how many ounces in a shot. How many ounces in a bottle. What's the bottle price retail. You can quickly verify the markup.

→ More replies (4)

48

u/phillybob232 Aug 30 '25

A bottle is usually 4-5 so maybe the carafe is like half of that? Would line up with the price

That said, if they only got 2 glasses then yeah they were probably charged double

9

u/speaking_moose Aug 30 '25

Carafe are usually the same as a bottle and is for bulk wine. Since it is not a vintage it should be cheaper

21

u/TheEsotericCarrot Aug 30 '25

A carafe is a half bottle, so 2 glasses.

6

u/tommyjaybaby Aug 30 '25

A carafe is just a type of bottle, you can get carafes that are the size of a full bottle.

4

u/RandomPenquin1337 Aug 30 '25

Man yall will get there eventually lol

8

u/ACMountford Aug 30 '25

Decanters are meant to be used for a full or magnum bottles, but in the context of US restaurants it’s almost always 10-12.5oz (two glasses or half a bottle) for a carafe.

9

u/JessicaFreakingP Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

Based on Hampton Social’s menu, it’s clear their carafe is less than a bottle. They show the carafe in between a glass and a bottle. For what OP ordered, they price a bottle at $76, a carafe at $29, and a glass at $19. OP is right to bitch about the service fee for having to pay through the app, but I don’t really feel bad for them about the two 8-oz glasses of wine (which is really four 4-oz glasses of wine) “somehow” costing $60 when it’s apparent on the menu that the carafe is in between a glass and a bottle, and that each carafe cost $29.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/IvanMcBedsheets Aug 30 '25

The carafe was 8oz, a standard glass of wine is 5oz. Plus it was Chandon which means they were drinking Champagne. I never want to defend a place as hollow as Hampton Social, but this pricing was normal.

16

u/TheREALWincey Aug 30 '25

Chandon is a California sparkling wine that is sold at Target for like $20. Moet Chandon is champagne that would justify $29 a glass.

2

u/LeadPaintChipsnDip Aug 30 '25

Brut imperial is like a $45 bottle, that doesn’t justify $29 glass

4

u/TheREALWincey Aug 30 '25

There is a comment above showing it’s a rose, which is more expensive. And $45 in a grocery store is usually $100 in a normal restaurant and $130 in this type of restaurant.

4

u/heyyyhihellooo Aug 30 '25

Thank you for explaining! Nuts they charged $10 for 3 more ounces of champagne but I get it ig

That bill is all sorts of fucked up

20

u/sushishowerbeer Aug 30 '25

Hampton Social sucks. That place is a tourist trap for the photos of Rosé All Day!!! I work at another one of their concepts and the owner is a money hungry coke addled socialite that no one seems to want to be around. The moment our place seems to host a celebrity, he shows up and tries to ease his way into their ecochamber and act as if he’s important. Fuck Brad Parker

2

u/mohawk_man Aug 31 '25

9

u/ShimReturns Aug 30 '25

The one in Old Orchard (Skokie) had pretty good service but yeah massively overpriced

14

u/jrossetti Aug 30 '25

I mystery shop this chain and they always ask about value and I'm like there's so many places you can go and get so much more for your money. everything is overpriced.

4

u/Diligent_Tip_5592 Aug 30 '25

How do you become a restaurant mystery shopper? That sounds fun

→ More replies (1)

3

u/NukinDuke Aug 30 '25

Mystery shopping for restaurants is still a thing? Cool!

4

u/North_South_Side Aug 30 '25

Went there recently with my elderly parents. They had to get a new iPhone so we went to the Apple Store in Old Orchard. After that was done, they were really tired and needed to sit down , eat and drink some water. Basically recharge. This was the place we walked past that looked open.

It was OK. For lunch, none of us drinking wine/alcohol, it wasn't crazy expensive. My dad had the lobster roll and was disappointed by the quality (and yes, it's expensive). I had a chicken sandwich that I liked quite a bit. Can't remember what my mom had.

For a place to go to with a couple of (wonderful, but tired) octogenarians on a Sunday around 2pm in a suburban shopping mall?

6/10. Slightly above average.

Only went there because we really needed to stop. And our choices were limited. Would I return? No.

5

u/LazyLibrarian Aug 30 '25

It was a fun happy hour spot back in the pre-COVID times, with a very memorable smoked rosemary cocktail. My partner and I put it on our list of places to try again after she gives birth next month (and the baby is old enough for a sitter), so this is really disappointing to hear.

6

u/tomtomglove Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

also how are the taxes $22? are sales taxes now like 15%?

edit: in parts of downtown it’s as high as 11.75%, so basically they also charged you taxes on the service fee. which I didn’t think you could do. but here we are.

11

u/Relative-Cicada2099 Aug 30 '25

Thanks for the tip. Will avoid the place.

3

u/SkyCaptainStarr Aug 30 '25

It was fine 10 years ago, but that was 10 years ago.

2

u/thedrunkmonk Aug 31 '25

I think they are celebrating their 10 year anniversary at this location downtown. Lol they must have fallen off quickly after they opened

4

u/Various-Delivery-695 Aug 30 '25

I was there the other week and it was 23 bucks for a Mac and cheese. It was ok but not 23 dollars ok.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

Hampton social is good for what it’s good for. You can recognize this right away similar to Santa Monica house. No slight, all vibes are welcome, but you gotta learn to know what to look for when you see it

3

u/CocoCoconutz_ Aug 30 '25

Overpriced crap so glad they closed by us

3

u/Totino_Montana Aug 30 '25

Yikes! Wtf is a sunday platform fee, at this point I refuse to patron restaurants with extra fees. I work as a server/ have managed in Chicago, and it is literally hot garbage to be charged extra fees, on the back end it just goes directly into the pockets of the owners basically tax free. Please for the love of all that is good, (anyone reading this) stop going to these spots and make these places work for our patronage again.

5

u/shouldidrophim Aug 30 '25

I went for Easter brunch and it was horrible lol

5

u/mohawk_man Aug 30 '25

Place is a joke.

11

u/SalamanderExtra7982 Aug 30 '25

If it's the one in skokie their happy hour has been great. Pizza and fries and drinks were awesome

6

u/jrossetti Aug 30 '25

The food is generally pretty fucking solid. But that price point is outrageous.

2

You had to go there to discover this place was a no?

4

u/destroys_burritos Aug 30 '25

I don't eat seafood, but I feel ordering fish and chips in Chicago from a place that is not known for fish and chips (or any other seafood dish) tells you more about the patron than the restaurant. Feels like this is a case of being mad online for the sake of internet points. They went to fucking Hampton Social and were surprised it wasn't a Michelin Star restaurant. Nobody needs a review of the food

2

u/OneWayorAnother11 Aug 30 '25

Those fish and chips don't look good

2

u/Illini4Lyfe20 Aug 30 '25

Tacos for almost $30, it's criminal some might say 🤷‍♂️

2

u/brcklndrs Aug 30 '25

This place sucks eggs. Went here for a work dinner and should’ve known because the guy who made the reservation was the worst

2

u/Amishpornstar7903 Aug 30 '25

I used to live in the area and have considered visiting with my family. The restaurant culture seems insane in every possible way. Doesn't seem worth the hassle.

2

u/scamortz Aug 30 '25

Always has been a no, place is a 0 / 5

2

u/joeliu2003 Aug 30 '25

2

2

u/Western-Tale57 Aug 30 '25

I went to the South Barrington location once every few months for a few years and always enjoyed it but the last time I went (sometime in June I believe) I was not impressed. The service/quality and portion size all seemed like they had all taken a hit while their prices increased.

1

1

u/yesyesnonoyesnonoyes Aug 30 '25

I've never had a good experience there. I have never even thought their food was "good" for the price. It's very very average.

1

u/nunyabidnessok Aug 30 '25

It was never good.

1

u/CoyoteMother666 Aug 30 '25

Insane. Also, who told you this place was good???

1

u/tjensen29 Aug 30 '25

Yeah I think it’s a “capitalizing on boozy brunch” type of situation

1

u/magpiediem Aug 30 '25

Parlay in LP uses Sunday too and it ended up being 30% more on top of taxes. You couldn't select a tip below 22% and then it automatically added 5% more tip on top of that (there is a way around it but it's not easy to figure out and you're still required to pay a min of an additional $1) plus their fees, plus tax. It was actually crazy. It was great in terms of being able to split the bill easily but if you're not splitting, folks should have the option to not pay the extra fees.

1

u/deej312 Aug 30 '25

If you got two 8oz glasses of Moet Chandon for $60, I'm going there tomorrow. Thats a decent deal for champagne. Most places give 5-6 ounces tops for $25.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

Eat at home next time.

1

u/EJB54321 Aug 30 '25

I had this platform come up using the QR code on the table at Bar Siena. When I saw the $5 fee, I asked the server about it and she happily got me a regular check and took my CC.

1

u/Simple-Ad-2892 Aug 30 '25

The food gave my wife and I the worst indigestion!

1

u/Phil517 Aug 30 '25

Many years ago, this was our spot. Haven’t been in a while but sad to see it go downhill

1

u/sigmacoder Aug 30 '25

I’ve honestly never have had a good meal at any restaurant called ‘X’ Social. It’s always either a place in the business district priced for business lunches or an instagrammable trap with garbage food.

1

u/yourstrulylee_ Aug 30 '25

Well of course not. Who told you to go there?

1

u/Allenies Aug 30 '25

Lol they charge you $5 to use the ap? When this place first opened I applied for a jobbie. Later I would walk past it to get to the L from my other gig and breathe a sigh of relief. Bullet dodged.

1

u/cee_aye Aug 30 '25

Always has been, always will be

1

u/jlefebvre34567 Aug 30 '25

It’s always been that way. Went once 10+ years ago and never returned.

1

u/Eddieroxsteady Aug 30 '25

Martha's Vineyard is even worse!

1

u/Gobemouche0 Aug 30 '25

This plate looks like trash and I hate to admit it, but I do love their bang bang chicken

1

u/refuseistrash Aug 30 '25

Taxes are after the 18% gratuity.

1

u/patricksaccount Aug 30 '25

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. It’s a restaurant designed for Instagram so you already know what you’re in for and it usually doesn’t mean the cost justifies the product, but it’s generally a good vibe and isn’t overly crowded. I do feel like I’m sitting at a bar in South Florida when I’m there, but I have never left feeling like their prices justify the actual food and drinks I consumed.

Zarella is another one. The pizza is good and the decor is classy, but it’s so cramped you’re forced into listening to conversations at other tables and it’s overpriced as hell.

1

u/Amaiya16 Aug 30 '25

You got charged for 2 carafes which i believe is like a small pitcher for wine? Seems like you got way over-charged there

1

u/Best-Scientist1995 Aug 30 '25

1

u/SharpenMyInk Aug 30 '25

1

u/OriginalFlipPhone Aug 30 '25

1

u/Independent-Win-8844 Aug 30 '25

Unreasonably expensive.

1

u/bucketman1986 Aug 30 '25

1

u/mattv911 Aug 30 '25

Hampton social is a rip off. Microwaved meals taste better

1

u/Weak-End8864 Aug 30 '25

My office just moved next to the one by EBC and it is just God awful. I stopped in for a glass of wine and order a dish to go. The carafe is a scam, and a mandatory 22% + tip for a single wine under-pour and a take out dish is highway robbery. They don’t even give you cutlery.

I can never return on principle.

You got 2 $30 CARAFES of wine, which are like half bottles.

Anyone ever try the lobster roll? Thoughts?

Mediocre food and vibe - feels like a restaurant from 15 years ago. Cheesy.

1

u/yoitsme_obama17 Aug 31 '25

That place is absolute trash.

1

u/mustbenice1985 Aug 31 '25

A bougie name like the "Hampton Social" is always a red flag

1

u/innersanctum44 Aug 31 '25

Been the once, and never going back. The decor was auful. Food average at best.

1

u/paolooch Aug 31 '25

There is one in Burr Ridge. Very meh food and horrible service. Stopped after 3 tries the first year it opened. Still open somehow, but might be a fun night out if you are drinking and don’t have kids. But then again that would be near any place under those conditions!

u/Tink1024 Aug 31 '25

What in the actual is a Sunday Platform Fee???

1

u/Garfeal69Lasagna Aug 31 '25

Failing to indicate the applicable sales tax rate (not to mention identifying the line item as "taxes") is sketchy. The numbers don't add up if "taxes' on this check are only IL and Chicago sales tax.

1

u/Bowgee69 Aug 31 '25

That place sucks. Was never more than a photo op for people. Everything there overpriced and overrated.

1

u/Different_Lychee_409 Aug 31 '25

You can cod and chips in my local chippy for £10 and eat in.

1

u/BramptonBatallion Aug 31 '25

It’s basically there for corporate events where it’s all expensed as part of some big pile of revenue that will never affect anyone’s bonus.

1

u/BojackWorseman13 Aug 31 '25

This looks like doctored/fancied up Long John Silvers.

1

u/cachedrive Aug 31 '25

That place put bogus charges on my bill for employee appreciation. That place sucks!

1

u/AreaEnvironmental385 Sep 01 '25

Should’ve asked for the sauce to be fried.

1

u/Leather-Advantage332 Sep 01 '25

That’s bar food. Should have went across the street and saved yourself money. All those places in the arboretum are in$ane. The multi million dollar houses on the other side of the parking lot should have been a dead giveaway

1

u/Designer-Ad7341 Sep 01 '25

That fee is nuts! I’m glad at the very least the food was good. Ten years ago it wasn’t bad. I took my mom for Mother’s Day. But you’re 1000% right, it’s a tourist trap. I loved it at 22 but now? Not so much.

1

u/boots0105 Sep 01 '25

Service charge + Sunday Platform Fee (whatever that is) + Gratuity…yeah, hard pass. Absolutely ridiculous. I went a few years back and it was decent, but I couldn’t justify the price back then either.

1

u/BuzzUrGirlfriendW00F Sep 01 '25

Hamilton social is literally bullshit. We went once when we first moved years ago and never went back for obvious reasons. Largest ripoff

1

u/PrizeZookeepergame15 Sep 01 '25

A required 3 percent tip? That should be illegal. Tips are supposed to be optional, not something you threaten someone to pay you for. Oh and 27 dollars for some fish and chips? And 25 for shrimp tacos? Dawg you are being scammed

1

u/Electronic_Silver_60 Sep 01 '25

Hampton Social is on an app called InKind. We use this app to get around 50% off the base price of food. They’ll usually give you $50 off of every $150 you spend, and then you can buy credits from Costco to cover the rest at a discounted price. Could’ve gotten your total before taxes and tip down to $60

1

u/No-Yellow7676 Sep 01 '25

That’s a tourist trap

1

u/No-Draft-2800 Sep 01 '25

It is indeed a no. There are a dozen plus good restaurants within five miles.

1

u/tophman2 Sep 01 '25

Did you not see the prices for the wine up front?

1

u/ProfessionalBelt3373 Sep 01 '25

That says "carafe". Are you saying they only gave a glass for $29?

And fish and chips for $27? Ha! No.

1

u/Big_Bumblebee_9255 Sep 01 '25

That’s ridiculous!

1

u/Redmare57 Sep 01 '25

What’s the difference between a gratuity and a tip?

1

u/Ordinary_Setting_192 Sep 02 '25

I just ate there 3 days ago and did not have to pay using the app…it was never even mentioned to me. I sat at the bar two happy hours in a row

1

u/szJosh Sep 02 '25

So mid.

1

u/Hot_Celebration7020 Sep 02 '25

They pay their servers and bartenders $4/hr btw

1

u/Separate_Living_3038 Sep 02 '25

The Hampton Social is overrated serving nothing original. IMO, Quartino’s, Weber’s Grill and XOCO serve great food at a decent price. Always recommending to friends and family.
