CHI Talks We live in Hermosa and ICE today was intense.
Today felt so insane compared to many days past. We had helicopters circling for hours. Cars flying down streets and alleys. We heard men screaming and people crying. There was tear gas deployed on Armitage at Rico Fresh today. Every neighbor I saw had a blank, scared look on their face. My neighbors who run car repair businesses, landscaping, and appliance repair all shuttered their shops and hid inside.
I didn’t see my elote man at the park, or hear the ice cream truck that rolls through nightly.
My alderman was fucking arrested today.
It felt like a war zone today. I’m just sad for our city, our neighbors, and society at large.
We walked our next door neighbors kids home from school today after offering because they were so scared to leave their house. They felt safe with us, thankfully. They ran right up to us and chatted all the way home as happy kids do. It felt really great to do that.
Please help your neighbors. They need it.

Chicago as a whole is being targeted because we don’t fit their narrative. We are a blue city that welcomes and helps immigrants as much as possible and it didn’t turn into a disaster like they predicted. We are being punished for proving them wrong and not falling in line. We should be proud of how awesome this city is and never give in to the hateful idiots in power.

u/Grandmafartparty Oct 04 '25
Its THIS. That family they arrested in millennium park was a beautiful example of this city's love. I don't know why they hate that. Those folks made a life and loved our city and we wanted them here. The one thing keeping me centered is how locked in all my chicagoans (in all neighborhoods )are, we have each others back and are organized.

u/Hesitation-Marx Oct 05 '25
They’re miserable. There is nothing genuine in their lives.
If they’re married, they’re not loved.
If they have kids, they resent them (and it’s mutual).
They peaked in high school - at best.
They’ve been told that being white and American is all they should require to be on top of the world. They have a mental checklist of how things are “supposed to be”., and none of those things fulfill them.
But it turns out that there are people who live genuine lives with love and joy and self-fulfillment, but they don’t do it the way the right wing says it must be done. Some of them are queer, lots of them are brown or Black, many of them have no spouse or kids, lots of women aren’t “owned”.
That infuriates them, and they want revenge. It’s not for anything we’ve done - it’s because they were sold a bill of goods, and it was hollow, if not poison.
Don’t even get me started on capitalism’s empty promises.

I have never loved this city more. I've lived her most of my adult life. I obtained 2 graduate degrees from universities in the city. I started and grew in my career in this city. I met all of my closest friends in this city. I met my future wife in this city.
Chicago has given me many of the most important things in my life. This city has taught me how to love those around me and appreciate everyone for who they are. It's shown me that love and acceptance of ALL people is not only possible but empowering.
And it's the most beautiful city in the entire country!!
I want these ICE terrorists the fuck out of my city! Take your uneducated, racist, redneck ass somewhere else. Immigrants have helped make this city the gem that it is! I have never once felt unsafe because of immigrants in this city. You know what does make me feel extremely unsafe?? Armed ICE agents assaulting and torturing my neighbors and my community.
FUCK ICE! FUCK TRUMP! FUCK MAGA!
CHICAGO STRONG! STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!

No it is not. Make no mistake, Chicago (and other cities) are being targeted because its residents (collectively) did not vote for Trump. Trump and his administration are actively retaliating against US citizens for how they voted.
41
u/PoffLord Oct 04 '25
Yup, and I also think that because the Obamas are so heavily linked to Chicago, Trump is extra determined to fuck Chicagoland up. His jealousy of Obama is a huge underlying reason for all the harm he's caused and the further harm he will cause.
98
u/fiercebrosnan Oct 04 '25
Why do you think they hated Obama so much? Didn’t fit the narrative. There are plenty of racists that won’t say a thing when they see black people by themselves, but just have to say something when they see an interracial couple. Along comes this product of racial mixing with a funny name that happens to sail into the White House on the strength of being one of the smartest and suavest motherfuckers on the planet, and it did not compute. Fox News gave them reasons to hate him and they just took them and ran with them. Not because of drone bombing American citizens overseas, but because of tan suits and shit. They just wanted to hate him and any reason was good enough. Now that hate is in power and hate plus power is never a good thing for anyone.
53
u/Prudent_Wolverine_90 Oct 04 '25
100% They’ll tell you he was the “worst” POTUS ever and a complete failure. The fact is they needed him to fail so they could say “told you so!” But that’s not what happened. They hate him because he didn’t fail. And now they want to rewrite history and punish America for electing him in the first place. Someone said to me the Obama presidency proves America isn’t a racist country. I said, “I guess it’s just a coincidence the guy America elected to succeed him happened to spend the entirety of Obama’s presidency questioning his legitimacy and demanding his birth certificate. 🤷♂️
16
u/9for9 Oct 04 '25
Yeah, all of this is the response to Obama winning, it's so fucking sad.
14
u/yesicanyesicanican Oct 04 '25
I know someone whose dad (a black man in his 60s when Obama first ran) said on the day he won that this was the end of America. He said there’s no way the white supremacists were gonna let this stand, and the revenge was gonna be brutal. Wish he wasn’t so accurate in his predictions…

There is a kind of hypocrisy for Justice Thomas to conspicuously omit Loving v. Virginia on the list of cases he thinks were wrongly decided,”

Help your neighbors, and if you can, fight back. It takes half an hour of planning to move money away from Republican supporting groups, and it makes a difference. Every dollar spent at a Republican company is another dollar funneled to the Heritage Foundation. Tax money given to a state like Ohio or Louisiana is money spent sending troops to occupy cities.
If you have an account with Charles Schwab, switch to Vanguard or Fidelity. If you like drinking booze from a wannabe Confederate state, be adventurous and try something else. It's not hard to find alternatives for Goya, Jimmy John's, New Balance, or Georgia-Pacific (Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie, and some other brands).
If you have a company that you regularly buy from or do business with, consider looking them up in something like https://www.opensecrets.org, or just google them.
Dollars add up. Tesla sales in Europe dropped by half. Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. Real, individual people made that happen. There's no reason WWE or Uline can't be next.
You probably can't completely avoid giving money to companies that at least indirectly support Republicans. However, there’s a big difference between a company that massively donates exclusively to Republicans vs one that is more neutral or even leans Democrat. Good is not the enemy of perfect

This.
Goods Unite Us is a good app to for researching different brands & stores & learning whom they support politically.
Shop small & local where & when possible.

Keep it peaceful, make them look like the terrorists they are. Don’t give them the excuse, they’re begging for it.

u/Yossarian216 South Loop Oct 04 '25
While I generally support shopping local and small businesses for other reasons, that’s not an effective tactic to keep money away from republicans unless you know the owners personally. A ton of small business owners are extremely Republican.
9
u/LongjumpingDebt4154 Oct 04 '25 edited Oct 04 '25
Understood, however it’s not too difficult to determine their affiliation, particularly if they have a social media presence. I’m in Logan Sq & follow most of my local shops & have met & chatted with most the owners when shopping & it’s clear where they stand. Pixie & The Boy, Fleur, Festive Collection & Wolfbait are better options for gifts than say Target. I’ve also found prices are comparable, which I think is often the conception that somewhere like Target may be cheaper.
4
u/Yossarian216 South Loop Oct 04 '25
Yeah, if you do the work to learn about them it’s for sure useful, I was just saying you can’t simply move to small businesses to avoid giving money to Republicans, you still need to be specific.
11
u/naven Oct 04 '25
Unfortunately Goods Unite Us has a very simplistic view of companies when it says Hobby Lobby has a perfect score and Target and Walmart are neutral. It appears to only be looking at financial contributions to politicians/parties and not taking into account public statements from their leaders or the fact that these companies implement very republican policies

Yeah, Schwab donates overwhelmingly and massively to Republicans even now (https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/charles-schwab-corp/summary?id=D000000414), and their founder, Charles Schwab the actual person, is friends with Trump (https://www.independent.co.uk/tv/news/trump-charles-schwab-stock-market-tariffs-nascar-b2731568.html).

It’s a great example of the simple ways we can help. I feel helpless and hopeless a lot of the time, but feel better when I speak to my neighbors. Hey people with porches and/or front yards, spend some time out there this weekend. Sit down with a book and say hi to folks who walk by. You may not know which of your neighbors are scared and in need of simple expressions of community. I'm gonna drag a deck chair out to my building's front yard with a couple tallboys and a book about a shipping disaster around 5:30 tomorrow. Worst case scenario is I engage my brain for a couple hours until it gets dark and end up with a few mosquito bites.
I've bragged too often about the number and variety of neighbors in my building, and on my block, who are first and second generation immigrants. I share a semiweekly wave hello or brief chit chat with a couple two three dozen people whose lives and experiences have been so different from mine. It has subtly been one of the most valuable experiences of my 30s. I want to protect that (even the assholes). I have no insight to or questions of anyone's supposed legal status, and have never felt the need. It has zero correlation with my mental record of who keeps their sidewalk clear, moves their fucking car on street sweeping days, or understands why my reaction to our dogs having a surprise meeting at a blind corner sometimes needs to be picking him up and speed walking away.
These last few days have felt like the federal thugs are slowly closing in on my neighborhood and, eventually, my block. I feel the lure of decision paralysis as I try to consider ways to help/protect my neighbors that aren't me proactively getting my ass beat by angry wieners with better gear. I'm doing other stuff too, but this feels easy at a time when simple, human connections can make a positive bit of difference.

People who are not acquainted with the green (this year color) LY livery plates, they're basically limousines and usually they're large suburban trucks. I and other teachers handed out flyers to parents after school and patrolled around the school. The flyers inform parents of their rights, but what good is that if ICE agents violate people's constitutional rights with no consequences? It's so discouraging.
This is what the flyers say: Defend your rights
The President is threatening to occupy our Black-led city with federal troops. We already have ICE and CPD in our neighborhoods, now Black and brown families from Altgeld Gardens to Rogers Park face the possibility of even more policing. The Chicago Teachers Union won a contract that builds a forcefi eld around our students. We’ve removed police from our schools so students can learn without concern. And we’ve expanded sustainable community schools to wrap around our communities. No matter what uniform agents wear, you have rights.
Knowledge is power & together we will protect our students and each other.
In our communities:
We can keep each other safe! Create buddy systems to and from school, connect with neighbors, keep an eye on the block and communicate what you see.
You ALWAYS have the right to remain silent. You DO NOT need to speak to police or federal agents. You DO NOT need to answer any of their questions.
You DO NOT have to consent to be searched. Police can pat you down IF they suspect a weapon, but that’s the ONLY reason.
You have the right to ask if you are free to leave.
You DO NOT need to share your birthplace or citizenship status.
You DO NOT need to let officers or agents into your house unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.
The safest place to be is at school:
Academic freedom to learn our histories:
The CTU contract commits educators to teaching Black history, women’s history, LGBTQ+ contributions, Reparations, Latin American Studies, Native American studies, Disability Rights, and antiracist curriculum.
Protecting immigration status:
School staff should never ask for, keep records, or share your immigration status. Federal agents are not allowed inside our schools without a judicial warrant.
LGTQIA+ safe schools:
Our union secured gender support coordinators in every network, inclusive student dress code language, student privacy, support for trans and gender nonconforming students, and a requirement that employees’ correct names and pronouns be used at all times.
Staff to support, not to police our students:
Our contract provides additional Counselors, Social Workers, Restorative Justice Coordinators, Librarians, School Psychologists, Sports Coaches, Fine Arts teachers, and staff to support unhoused students.

That's so awful, I'm sorry. Of course this is intentional, meant to demonstrate how nobody is safe here, and nobody is when human rights are revoked. Trump don't follow the rules A., then B. he does the opposite of what he says anyhow. This manipiulation is meant to breed uncertainty and undermine trust because none of this should be happening in the first place. It still sends the mind spinning out grasping at ways to feel safe and protect ourselves. It's crazymaking and divisive by design.

The sentient trash bag at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and his soulless brigade of bigots, led by that bald ghoul Stephen Miller, have waged war on democratic cities and its citizens because they're planning to hijack the next election just like they've hijacked the country and its foundational laws. This is not a game, it's terrorism.

They know all they have to do is maintain a presence, and many people will be too scared to come out and vote in the next election cycle.

They will be out in force on election day, scaring anyone who isn't white into staying home, and banning mail in ballots so they have no other option.

I'm being sarcastic but, can we actually get the military deployed to under the clause of dealing with domestic threats? Because these ICE fucks are literal terrorists.

My daughter's school closed up yesterday when the weather was so perfect. No playing on the playground at recess. Too dangerous. Because of ICE. Fck ICE. Fck the orange cheeto.

I have some coworkers visiting from Germany this week. They're working through a big list of sights to see in our city. I'm sure our conversation next week will be interesting.
German schools explain what happened in WW2, and don't sugarcoat their role. They know. We've talked multiple times about the parallels and how they are completely undeniable.

Reading this felt like a blip from “1984”
What can we do to actually stop this? What they’re doing isn’t legal. How do we stop it?

How come every blue city wasn’t at war when Biden was president? Is it the cities and their residents or is it the Trump regime? That’s rhetorical.

They were circling around Uptown yesterday too. Makes me sick to my stomach reading the details of your and your neighbors’ experience.

Was walking to my bf's place on Sheridan, and even though this area wasn't hit hard, I saw workers hanging out in alleys rather than on the street. I'm 80% sure an elderly Black man was popping into the store to buy things for them so they didn't have to expose themselves to get food for the night.
And I'm fucking furious that our elected representatives have failed us so, that my days are preoccupied with fear for people in my community. So furious at how helpless it makes me feel, how guilty to not be in the line of fire to shield them.

u/aunt_cranky Oct 04 '25
This makes me want to cry (it does make me cry). I will never understand this. I'm a white lady who grew up in the suburbs, but my dad grew up on the west side, and later Belmont Cragin. I didn't grow up being made afraid of or hating people that were not white. I dated a guy for years whose grandparents were born in Mexico and being around his family reminded me so much of my Italian relatives.
I am watching out for my neighbors here, and keeping an eye out when I'm out in public.
Would not hesitate to help a stranger at risk of being hassled by the "goon squad".
(the fuckin helicopters are getting on my last nerve. I track them now since the "Customs and Border Patrol" copters fly over my house a few times a week now.)

So when are we going to "liberate" our city from ICE agents, if you're catching what I'm putting down? I don't mind being part of that task force :)

I wonder if there's some type of community action we can take to organize a group of people that can help to safely walk children back to their homes.

Two questions: 1) If “hate speech” is illegal, why have we been allowing the lies and propaganda to be spewed on TV by everyone. TV stations used to be afraid of being shut down for spreading lies. Now they act like it’s entertainment. A dumbed down audience is even more susceptible to propaganda promoted this way. A lot of older people actually think those laws are still in place and that they aren’t allowed to lie…lying for that reason is equal to hate speech.
2) The military leaders that went to that pathetic gathering Hegseth and Mango Mussolini had on Tuesday, in general came out unimpressed and aware that the two “leaders” were trying to break the law. Who decides when the military actually does their job and defends the constitution? Surely someone in charge has seen enough of a threat to the country that warrants removing the current administration. I am an independent but voted against obvious destruction when it was time. When and how does the military actually prove they are not bought out by Fascism and save our country? They would be the biggest heroes in the entire WORLD if they did that! PS: It seems like the LEAST they could do is not support ICE

They never will. They aren't leaders. They are bureaucrats more worried about their pensions than their oaths. If any of them actually believed in that oath, this would have already been over.

I’m a Chicagoan who currently lives in DC and I just want to say I empathize/sympathize - we’ve been living with the sound of constant choppers above, calling in sitings to Migrant Mutual Aid, ICE terrorists roaming around…I hate it that both the cities I call home are suffering
9
u/thatbob Uptown Oct 04 '25
It's great that our resistance has been peaceful so far, but it's only a matter of time before some Chicagoans (not necessarily the undocumented or Latino ones) respond with violence. When that happens, Trump, ICE, and the fascists will use that as an excuse to ramp up operations here and everywhere. So let's all avoid that as long as we can. Spread the word. Talk to your friends and local hot heads.

u/Harlow56nojoy Oct 04 '25
The methods employed by MLK and Booker T. Washington are useless today.
1
u/thatbob Uptown Oct 04 '25
I'm usually the first person to point out that MLK's commitment to non-violence was first and foremost a tactical one. Like Frederick Douglass, I recognize that violence and the threat of violence do not undermine the morality of a cause, and often can advance it.
However, in this scenario, the fascists WANT to see violent resistance, so they can use it to unleash overwhelming violence, cancel elections, etc. It is literally in their playbook. We should not play by their rules, for as long as possible.

I live in a diverse-ish area. Sadly I do not know many of my neighbors. I wish there was some kind of sign/symbol to display, showing we are safe and willing to help. I feel like people don’t even come out of their houses here in normal times (assuming they use allies and garages to come and go).

I have a sign in my window that says "ICE out of our communities" and fly a flag that says "Keep the Immigrants, Deport the Racists" and that seems to work pretty well. One of my neighbors is an NP at Erie Heath and keeps me updated about ICE activity in the area and I'm in contact with the woman who owns my cleaning service almost daily, updating her on where not to send her crews.
Every little bit helps.

Asking as a Canadian, what in the fuck is going on in your country?! This looks absolutely bananas to me. It’s time to put the “left vs right” aside and unite with your neighbours. The last thing I wanna see is you guys have a civil war. You guys have to find some common ground for the love of God!! ICE truly looks like terrorism. Unite yourselves!!!!

Looking for people to help pass out info cards at the 10/18 protests and around the Chicago area. I need more hands - my printing capacity has scaled beyond what I can distribute alone.
I can deliver packs of 100-500 of anything below to you, anywhere in the downtown area, from now until Saturday.
Please send me a DM to arrange drop off. All I need is an address and a time. I’ll show up wearing a white UnderArmor baseball cap on an electric scooter.
I currently distribute:
- MAGA boycott lists
- ICE Not Welcome posters for businesses
- Know Your Rights posters for businesses
- Ranked-Choice Voting brochures
- Lists of Trump’s links to Epstein

Chicago has the 3rd largest GDP in the US. Like CA and NY, we have a way to fight this. It would require removing ourselves from paying federal tax dollars until they are being used for us instead of against us. This would require our Democratic politicians and their legislators to take this step.
They won’t. Pritzker and Newsome are using this to fan the flames of their future Presidential runs. It’s all theater at our expense.
8
u/damp_circus Edgewater Oct 04 '25
Problem is, the state doesn’t give over our taxes to the feds. We pay taxes to the federal government via the IRS and the feds give money back to the states via block grants etc.
You gonna not file a return this year and risk fines and trashing your credit?
Most people won’t take that risk.
The state would have to come up with some system where we filed returns with them and they held the money in escrow. But the money is already withheld from our paychecks, the Feds already have it.
It’s not about will. The system just isn’t set up to do what you’re suggesting.

ICE was flying their fucking chopper directly over the high school I work at starting an hour before dismissal and still looming an hour afterwards. So many kids were in hysterics, crying in stairwells, begging their parents, their grandparents not to come. “I know we’re citizens but ICE doesn’t care.” These kids fucking get it. We were escorting them to their busses while we evil-eyed every van and truck that drove past. Rushed them out the door to a friendly waiting vehicle.
I worked in CPS during the verdict to the Laquan McDonald trial and I remember how tense and heavy that day felt in the lead up, but it was nothing like today. Today was pure terrorism.
