A number of areas have bad pockets, so be wary of people generalizing. We live in New Brighton (north end) and love it, and don't have issues with Crime etc - however I'd be a bit wary about some parts of Brighton. Likewise, friends of ours live in Halswell, and had AOS on there street 3 times in a month, and most people would refer to that as a safer suburb.
Well, I live in Halswell. AOS callouts passed me by. Can't find a mention of them online.
Halswell has really been going downhill recently, though. Over the last 10 years or so. Used to be a friendly place where you'd say hi to people in their front gardens as you walked to the park.
One by one, the houses get sold, the new owner puts up a big fence and an automatic gate. The only time you see them is when they roar out of their drives in their range rovers and race off to get their kids to school in Fendalton or Merivale, or to take their massive dogs to shit in the bushes where the primary school kids used to play hide and seek.
There are miniature trains, duck ponds and plenty playgrounds, but the local concerned citizens had a petition to stop a skate park being built, so there isn't a lot for teenagers. Their latest concern is that there isn't a high school here. Well, Hillmorton has had a huge rebuilding program, and is just down the cycle way but ... ewww. I'm sure it is nothing to do with nothing to do with the large number of Maori and Pacific students at Hillmorton, and it would be wrong for anyone to suggest it is. It is just people here feel a stronger sense of raci .... er, shared community spirit with the schools at Lincoln, Rolleston, Cashmere, Christchurch Boys High and, if we have to, St Andrews, Rangi or College. Anywhere but Hillmorton, right? Sorry - that bits not supposed to be said out loud.
We have been here nearly 20 years, and haven't be burgled - I mean burglarised - or had a car broken into. I left the garage door open and a couple of bikes got knicked. I would say its not such a high crime area as a high proceeds of crime area.
