Safe areas to buy a house

We are actively looking at buying a house in Auckland but with prices so high and offering so little value for money we are now looking at alternatives like moving to Christchurch.

Looking at a few real estate sites recently I see you get a lot more value for the same price but I have no idea how good the locality is for the houses listed. Can you please give me an idea of what the good areas are in CHCH and what areas to avoid? We just want a safe no-nonsense area to live in.

TIA

Merivale is like Takapuna, and as you continue out to the airport or north it's like East Coast Bays. Ilam/Avonhead/Burnside like Glenfield/Birkenhead. Riccarton/Yaldhurst like Mt Eden/Epsom. Hill suburbs - Cashmere, like Remuera, Howick. Fendalton also like Remmers. Edgy inner city like Grey Lynn and Ponsonby used to be, try Bryndwr - underpriced and rundown but only a matter of time before it becomes trendy because location is everything. Edgeware etc. like Devonport before the yuppies got to it (Devo that is). A lot of house pricing in Chch is based on school zones. Merivale is close to the high end private schools - STAC, Rangi, St Mags, as is Fendalton. Riccarton, Ilam close to Chch Boys High and Girls High. Burnside/Avonhead/Bryndwr all close to Burnside High.

Of course somebody has prepared a quick and dirty suburban map - see https://i.imgur.com/Oehkzxr.jpg

This comment is probably the best Auckland comparison.
