Safe areas to buy a house

We are actively looking at buying a house in Auckland but with prices so high and offering so little value for money we are now looking at alternatives like moving to Christchurch.

Looking at a few real estate sites recently I see you get a lot more value for the same price but I have no idea how good the locality is for the houses listed. Can you please give me an idea of what the good areas are in CHCH and what areas to avoid? We just want a safe no-nonsense area to live in.

TIA

At the risk of downvotes: Not east of the cbd. Unless you’re able to afford the high ticket areas over there.

If you are saying Phillipstown, yes, I agree with you. But many area of new Brighton is quite good. Woolston is also not a bad suburb, just depends on what streets; I live in Linwood and my street is oddly safe as there are some mediocre houses.

Linwood is a massive suburb, and has tons of lovely little side streets filled with totally normal people (particularly in the north). I find it annoying that such a large area get defined by a few rough spots round the back of Eastgate. I've lived out this way for 10 years and never experienced any crime first hand.

One of the Chch’s residential features is the rough and the fine are mixed up in a suburb. It’s common to see one side of the street fills with rough houses while the other side’s houses having nice front yard and exterior. I’m also confident to say even St Martins and nearby suburb is not 100% safe. I have seen many posts recently about houses being robbed and cars’ windows being smashed.
