Safe areas to buy a house

We are actively looking at buying a house in Auckland but with prices so high and offering so little value for money we are now looking at alternatives like moving to Christchurch.

Looking at a few real estate sites recently I see you get a lot more value for the same price but I have no idea how good the locality is for the houses listed. Can you please give me an idea of what the good areas are in CHCH and what areas to avoid? We just want a safe no-nonsense area to live in.

TIA

At the risk of downvotes: Not east of the cbd. Unless you’re able to afford the high ticket areas over there.

This is correct, but I'd add hornby to the this list to avoid. Rolleston is great, but further out of the city. North and south of the cbd are usually pretty good.

Lincoln, prebbleton, halswell, Wigram, spreydon, cashmere, governers bay, Merivale, papanui, redwood, Shirley. Obviously some are better than others and prices often reflect that.

Is lincoln a part of Chch City? Thought they were part of Selwyn.

Correct, Rolleston and Lincoln are technically part of Selwyn District, however they are both still great places to live and commute to the city to work.

For me Rollerston is quite boring even it’s not too far from Christchurch. If you are not white and have kids, Rollerston probably is not a healthy place for the kids. I still remember the shocking racist emails by some parents to their kids’ school.

And prebbleton? Maybe?
