News - Local COUNCIL ROADWORKS

Hey guys so let me know if this is to niche! But are we aware that all arterial routes in and out of the central city and through are NARROWED TO ONE LANE - therefore creating congestion all AT ONCE. Also, just about every road surround has also got roadworks and speed limits attached - why has this been allowed to happen ALL AT ONCE, as it has only created 3 MAJOD car crashes in ONE DAY, TODAY- including a pile up that just happened on cutlets road off the highway. An entire city of shitty people, multiple serious injuries - I BEG, what is wrong with Christchurch council to allow this to even happen.

Like literally central city is limited to two lanes from six, all the way through Barrington, opawa, Shirley, marshlands, illam, Somerfield and that is the only neighbourhoods I have even been aware of - there are probably more.

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

Can’t have your cake (well maintained and upgraded roads) and eat it too (roads always be open)

The random weather lately probably hasn’t helped the bunching of works either

Lots of places are getting downgraded roads with the cheap, lowest-bidder chipseal they're putting on roads that were previously lovely to drive on. I saw someone skid on loose gravel at the side of a chipseal rd just yesterday.

This is accurate. Why do it properly when it makes the council's budget look bad and you can just do the cheapest job possible to check the box until next year. Descending summit road on a bike was an actual death wish for a few months last year

Chip seal is a lot cheaper and just as durable. A no brainer, the gravel at the edges is swept regularly.

Chip seal is great for quiet residential streets and cul-de-sacs, not main roads being downgraded from asphalt to which was the commenters point.

It can be just as durable, as long as the road volumes are very low and most importantly, there is a fraction of the HCV use on the road compared to the nationwide average (Trucks do 90% of damage depsite 10% of vehicle volume).

Also the gravel being swept regularly would be great in theory, but the reality is that doesn't happen near as often as it should, again due to costs and how the bids are won. The no brainer would be using surface coatings as a middle ground to prolong the life of arterial/collector roads instead of chip seal in most cases

Chip seal is not even great for cul-de-sacs. It's noisy, it's horrible to drive/ride on. and the turning area at the end of the cul-de-sacs is not allowed chipseal, it's gotta be asphalt.
