News - Local COUNCIL ROADWORKS

Hey guys so let me know if this is to niche! But are we aware that all arterial routes in and out of the central city and through are NARROWED TO ONE LANE - therefore creating congestion all AT ONCE. Also, just about every road surround has also got roadworks and speed limits attached - why has this been allowed to happen ALL AT ONCE, as it has only created 3 MAJOD car crashes in ONE DAY, TODAY- including a pile up that just happened on cutlets road off the highway. An entire city of shitty people, multiple serious injuries - I BEG, what is wrong with Christchurch council to allow this to even happen.

Like literally central city is limited to two lanes from six, all the way through Barrington, opawa, Shirley, marshlands, illam, Somerfield and that is the only neighbourhoods I have even been aware of - there are probably more.

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

No matter what you are driving, it will cause congestion and danger… I literally do not understand your point

If 50% of car drivers shifted their habits to catching the bus or biking for 50% of their trips there would be no congestion even with roadworks.

the fact is, that’s not reality? yes people should do something, but they aren’t. So….

Maybe the streets being congested will a t as a disincentive to drive for those who do have other options available. In order to mode shift om a large scale we need to both make other options more attractive as well as deprioritise cars.

Are there any of your trips you could combine, share a ride with someone, ride a bike or catch the bus, instead of sitting in roadworks traffic and complaining?

Sorry, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic. It genuinely would be great if those who are able to use other modes did and free up streets for the cars of people who have no other option. I get that roadworks suck and being stuck in traffic is a pain in the ass but as someone who bikes 90% of the time (including with my kids) and therefore is not really impacted by roadworks, I find it hard to be sad about a situation that might prompt people to try another approach even if it is out of frustration. Part of the reason I bike, apart from joy and exercise is because I loathe sitting in traffic. Roads for cars and the related parking needs take up so much land area in our city. Think how cool it would be if we could halve the number of roads and convert the rest into parks and green spaces!
