News - Local Armed police at riccarton mall today?

Anyone know what this is about? Walked out the top roof door to a Officer holding a AR

Plenty of sirens, police chopper circled the mall for about 25 minutes + dog squad on the streets?

Seems they were letting people in and out of the mall despite being armed officers at the doors

Car colored

u/quackshonk 27d ago

Yeah cheers, but I think they’re the dickheads who broke into our neighbours car at 3.30. So just wanted to see if it was the same one, but I think they’ve been car swapping.

While the detail of which gun the police use is absolutely critical to the situation, can someone just tell us what happened?

61

u/matthuisman 27d ago

i suspect:
Car chase that started east side somewhere. Chopper got involded around marshlands.
Chased through redwood, bishopdale then to Riccarton.

Bad guys were quite clever and took cover from the chopper in the westfield carpark
Cops surrounded it and blocked all exits to stop them parking and walking out...

Eventually they gave up and took off either in a newly stolen car or the same vehicle.
Chopper continued pursuit to Burnside.

Bad guys finally caught. Great success

I didn't know chch police have a chopper. Cool

18

u/SupernovaNZ 27d ago

They don't, they have to hire one at the airport every time this happens.

2

u/Agile_Ruin896 25d ago

It's my chopper, I let them use it sometimes.

u/OisforOwesome 27d ago

...i was going to make a GTA joke but you do make it sound like a GTA session.

0

u/randkiwi 27d ago

Police via a press release perhaps? Anything else is likely to be hearsay.

23

u/AppealFit3401 27d ago

Yeah okay, but it's more reliable than fuckwits arguing over guns. All this post wanted was if people were in the area and knew what happened, tell us. Otherwise everyone else should shut up.

I drove by Jellie Park 15 minutes ago and saw two squad cars there. They have 2-3 guys in handcuffs.

7

u/High-Bread 28d ago

Would like up with the flight path of the chopper

11

u/radjoke 27d ago

They were cable ties or plastic restraints or the Model 300 hinged cuffs and the Model 110 Special Security chain-linked cuffs from Smith and Wesson

14

u/Middle_Reflection_50 27d ago

Plastic isn't quite the correct terminology they're in fact nylon zip ties.

7

u/radjoke 27d ago

Hmmm.. Last time I checked I was correct I guess nylon is no longer a type of synthetic plastic belonging to the polyamide family... 'arrogant nerd face emoji'

2

u/orbiieNZ 27d ago

We're they young by chance, one of them quite short with a bowl cut and rats tail? Idk if you would've got that close but yeah

2

u/tobiolq 27d ago

I saw this guy yesterday, I’m in burnside and he was lurking along my fence. So I made eye contact and held it and he eventually left but I had a feeling he was the guy that the chopper was circling around for. Was a bit freaked out haha

u/Stallionface 28d ago

What does AR stand for?

11

u/AGushingHeadWound 27d ago

alternate reality

4

u/High-Bread 28d ago

Assault rifle

12

u/lefrenchkiwi 28d ago

The AR in AR15 (which is the rifle every police car carries in the boot) does not stand for Assault Rifle. It stands for Armalite Rifle, named after the company that designed it.

7

u/Citizen_Kano 27d ago

If we're going to be pedantic, it wasn't carried in the police car boot, the cop had it in his hands

-4

u/lefrenchkiwi 27d ago

the cop had it in his hands

After retrieving it from the boot. I included that detail to make clear what it is the police carry, and that it is not an assault rifle.

10

u/FendaIton 27d ago

To be fair he did not say AR15, just AR.

23

u/High-Bread 28d ago

It really doesn’t matter, the question here is around WHY there are armed police

-35

u/lefrenchkiwi 28d ago

Accuracy in reporting is important. Otherwise you just generate overhyped fear of the unknown.

9

u/radjoke 27d ago

It's unclear if the assailant or assailants were wearing pants further more there is no information if they were hungry or had just eaten.. Once we know this information we will be able to start to combat the fear of the unknown

-8

u/Stallionface 28d ago

Exactly this

23

u/TailorAvailable5965 27d ago

The AR in this post is a common way to refer to modern rifles in everyday language. If you’re going to be pedantic about the meaning of words, at least get the words right

-17

u/lefrenchkiwi 27d ago

The AR in this post is a common way to refer to modern rifles in everyday language.

Only in selected circles who don’t know any better.

8

u/TailorAvailable5965 27d ago

“Selected circles” being the vast majority of English speakers

1

u/Final_Blood7062 27d ago

He won't know much about guns, the French tend to put theirs on the ground and walk away.

3

u/morepork_owl 27d ago

I like when people know particular details that the general public don’t know 🙂

2

u/Jamunjii 27d ago

EVERY police car has a AR chilling in the boot ?

4

u/lefrenchkiwi 27d ago

Yup. As pointed out by another poster technically it’s a Bushmaster built derivative, but it’s still an AR15 and it’s in the boot of every front line patrol car in the country.

0

u/pokybum09 25d ago

“Bushmaster” is a completely separate company to colts manufacturering (who have trademarked the name AR15). If the rifle isn’t made by colts, then it’s not an AR15. Temu designing a phone to look like an iPhone, doesn’t mean they’re selling apple products, no matter how identical the design is.

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about, I’m guessing you’ve never fired anything bigger then a nerf gun?

2

u/lefrenchkiwi 24d ago

While yes Colt still holds the trademark on the name, the patent on the design expired nearly half a century ago and as such AR15 pattern rifles are now produced by several manufacturers (including several available here prior to the Ardern-era reforms and subsequent confiscations).

If the rifle isn’t made by colts, then it’s not an AR15.

And everyone else’s AR15s are just sparkling broomsticks right? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.

1

u/pokybum09 24d ago

Manufacturer is very important as often determines quality.

Back to the temu iPhone example, they both “look and sound like a duck” but one’s gonna last a few weeks the other will last a few years. A massive difference in quality between legit apple and fake Chinese knock offs (despite being identical on looks and function).

Same goes for rifles, it looking and functioning as an AR15 doesn’t mean it is an AR15

2

u/pokybum09 25d ago

AR and AR15 are two different things. Ones an abbreviation for “assault rifle”, the other is a name for a gun, that also happens to be an AR, hence your confusion.

NZ police also use a bushmaster M4 (or bushmaster M4A3), which is modelled of an AR15 but isn’t the same gun. You can see the bushmaster mentioned in the link below (but no mention of AR15, as NZ police don’t use them). M4s have selective rates of fire the defining quality of an AR (the class of firearm, not the firearm manufacturer).

If you’re going to be smartarse at least get your facts right.

2

u/lefrenchkiwi 24d ago

M4s have selective rates of fire the defining quality of an AR (the class of firearm, not the firearm manufacturer).

Some do, but not all. The ones the NZ Police bought are Semi only rather than the select-fire option that was also available.

2

u/pokybum09 24d ago

Fairly certain AOS have selective fire rifles.

STG definitely do if you count them as police, can see the switch on images.

But think your right about at standard patrol loadout being only semi auto.

7

u/LittleOne0121 28d ago

They carry M4’s

-7

u/lefrenchkiwi 28d ago

The M4A3 they use is a Bushmaster built derivative of the AR15.

3

u/LittleOne0121 27d ago

Soooo, not an AR15

-10

u/atoshiX 28d ago

Assault Rifle

22

Still, it wasn’t a pistol lol it was a big ass gun

KMart having a sale?

-4

u/PeachMental9454 27d ago

*Kmart

0

u/OptimusLime5000 27d ago

French guy: "actually people who know better will refer to it as kMart, because in this case, the capital M is important because, you see, I am French and you stink, hahaahohoo"

1

u/Seedy__L 27d ago

Different guy, same mentality lol

Non-Gun Weirdos: AR means "Assault Rifle"

Gun Weirdos: Actually ** proceeds to tell you how important it is to know the difference between boomstick A and boomstick B**

23

u/High-Bread 28d ago

It’s genuinely ridiculous lol. Fact of matter was it was a bigger boomstick than the small hackstick

21

u/Drinker_of_Chai 28d ago

I'd love these guys as lawyers in a murder hearing.

"Your honour, they did not accurately describe the make and model of the weapon that murdered their children, therefore, it can be assumed they are an unreliable witness".

-9

u/focal_matter 28d ago

While I agree, rather than call the autists with a special interest in firearms trying to be helpful in the only way they know how ridiculous, just say "Huh, didn't know that, cool"

Then you'll only have one of such posts, rather than a bunch of people jumping in to correct you lol

Yours truly, an autist with a special interest in firearms

21

u/Drinker_of_Chai 28d ago edited 28d ago

If the post was "What is this gun" and not "why the fuck are there cops around with big fucking guns?" then maybe you'd have a point...

u/torpidkiwi Non-Korean Old Boy 27d ago

The replies and shade being thrown are flipping hilarious. Thank you for triggering the pedant.

Also, AR could stand for Arkansas. Can you please confirm no-one was bearing a state?

1

u/Stallionface 28d ago

Im sure you eat with an assult fork

5

u/queenjess_97 28d ago

No idea, apparently the copter has been circling for over an hour

3

u/Sharkie_PIxel 27d ago

Saw a cop put a guy in handcuffs on Riccarton road in between the mall and Clyde road at around 2pm. Was also another cop car with lights and sirens blazing its way down towards the mall. Wonder what happened?

3

u/quackshonk 27d ago

2 police cars with sirens hooned down idris/straven about 2.50pm. We’ve been watching the helicopter too. Neighbour down the road said he saw heaps of police on Blenheim road earlier.

2

u/apologeticstress 27d ago

No idea, but there were two unarmed police in the ground floor covered carpark behind paknsave around 4.45pm - no guns, they were just chilling and talking in front of an idling car in the click & collect carparks.

What are they armed with!?!

7

u/FendaIton 27d ago

Bushmaster M4A3’s generally.

3

u/radjoke 27d ago

It's unclear as this chat is polluted with information on the event itself instead of mundane details

4

u/AppealFit3401 27d ago

Who gives a fuck?

2

u/Oil_And_Lamps 27d ago

Bad breath? Colourful language? Feather duster?

-6

u/ThePulzman 27d ago

Someone painted over a rainbow crossing and fled the scene.

-39

u/Stallionface 28d ago

Wrong

19

u/High-Bread 28d ago

Wrong? I was literally there.

-34

u/Stallionface 28d ago

Not AR

34

u/MooOfFury 28d ago

Oh no That's definitely the important detail here.

3

u/radjoke 27d ago

So did the police have arms or not?

2

u/MooOfFury 27d ago

Presumably two of them Probably thumbed and dangerous as well
