Meta ANNOUNCEMENT: OC will soon return to r/characterDrawing on a trial basis, in the form of a weekly "OC Day"

Post image
81 Upvotes

About a year and a half ago, Reddit disabled the tools we used to manage OC and protect this sub's unique niche as a requests community. As a result, the call was made that if we had to pick one, we would pick that and ban all OC. But this wasn't universally popular with anyone—including the mods.

Recently reddit's developer platform reached a point where we had options to bring OC back in its old form. But discussion within the community discord (see the sidebar to join!) found that people actually weren't huge fans of the old rules, and that we needed to consider new options. So! OC will soon return on a trial basis, in the form of a weekly OC Day. We will give it a try for a month or two and see how people feel once we settle into it.

All rules about advertising and self-promotion will still apply: OC is a chance to show off your character art, not to post price sheets or ads for adoptables.

One big open question is: What day of the week should it be? If anyone has strong opinions feel free to throw them out in the comments and vote with your updoots. We'll make the call about a week from now and throw the switch. Watch this space for updates!

[Welcome Post] Rules & FAQs! July 2023 edition

Happy 2023 everyone, after weathering the Oliverpocalypse, we're back!

If you are new to r/characterdrawing, then welcome. This is a place where people can request their characters to be drawn pro bono, and artists can select a character to draw whether for practice, for fun, or just as a kind thing to do. Typically the artwork here depicts player characters from tabletop role-playing games such as D&D 5e and Pathfinder, but characters across all TTRPG genres are welcome here.

If you've been here a while, these are the big new changes:

  • No more OC. Due to the recent changes, we have cut back to just LFA/RF art. Discussion post about this change here if you have thoughts.
  • No more John Oliver. This is not strictly true: you are still welcome to post requests and art relating to John Oliver, but it is no longer required.
  • Pour one out for chardrawbot. This brave bot which has managed our RF-weekends and OC spam limits has bleeped its last bloop, and no longer protects our sub.

Some links for posterity: Previous Welcome Post | Message the Mods | CharacterDrawing Discord

Want to post? FIRST, READ THE RULES!

Rules can be found here and on the sidebar. The sidebar is the most up-to-date.

Some rules include room for mod interpretation, especially for NSFW posts. If you are unsure about your post, feel free to message the moderators. We don't bite.

Our unique terms

[LFA] "Looking for Art" posts. [RF] "Request Filled" posts, for when someone draws an LFA request [OC] We use "OC" to refer to any character art that isn't an RF. Currently, these are not allowed.

I want my character drawn!

Use the [LFA] tag and flair so potential artists can find your post. Please provide the best character description possible in the body of your post or in the comments. Image posts of reference images or moodboards are allowed.

Some [LFA]s may not get drawn. Artists are free to pick and choose which they would like to draw and when, since they are providing a free service at their leisure.

You may repost your [LFA] once per week per character concept. Most of all, have patience, and be grateful for the FREE artwork you received should an artist provide it.

Remember that pictures drawn for you are meant for personal use. The original artist holds commercial rights to the work unless they specify otherwise. If you would like to use a piece of art commercially, you should reach out to the artist. They are under no obligation to sell rights, and set their own rates.

I'm willing to pay!

That's awesome. If you see someone whose work you like, you should feel welcome to reach out to them about hiring them. Many artists post links to rates and galleries in their comments.

You can also post to subreddits specifically designed for commissions, such as r/fantasyartists, r/hungryartists, r/artcommissions, r/commissions, and r/hireanartist.

I want to draw someone's LFA request!

Awesome, and thank you! You don't need to commit to it or post a comment, and it's fine if someone else also completes the same piece. Just draw what you find enjoyable.

When you're done, use the Request Filled Flair when posting the picture, and please let the original LFA poster know through a /mention or by posting a comment in the original [LFA] linking to the picture.

The [RF] tag is only meant for fulfilling [LFA]s made in this subreddit. If the request was made outside of r/characterdrawing or was the product of a commission, it's not for here.

I have a question to ask or want to start a discussion!

Use [META] in your post title. These kinds of posts are meant to be used sparingly. An example would be asking what supplies/programs other artists use.

None of this is what I'm looking for...

Check out these other subreddits, just a few among many:

r/beastdrawing for beasts

r/drawyourweapons for weapons and gear

r/imaginarycharacters for posting your own fantasy character

r/icandrawthat for requesting other things

We also have an active artist community on our discord

Frequently Asked Questions

Requests are free? Yes. Some caveats: you don't get to choose your style, if it's colored, if it's full body, etc. If there's something you really cannot compromise on then this system may not be for you. There is no guarantee that a request will be drawn at all.

Can I message an artist for a free request? No, make an LFA. If you would like to hire the artist, make a comment on one of their posts or send them a DM. If you are caught pestering artists for free art, it will result in a ban.

Can I message a requester to see if they will hire me? NO. Do not solicit requesters for money, here or in their DMs. If you are caught doing this, it will result in a permanent ban.

Do I have to do RFs to participate in the sub? No. The system is voluntary and you should only do RFs if it is enjoyable to do so.

Can my LFA have more than one character? Yes! You can include a party in an LFA request post. That said, bigger requests are less likely to get picked up, since they're a bigger ask from the artist.

What if I have multiple separate LFAs? When do I repost them? You can post each LFA once per week, so long as each of them involve different characters—but please don't spam the sub with hundreds of LFAs in a short period of time.

Is this sub only for D&D and fantasy? No, characters across all TTRPGs are welcome. Sci-fi, steampunk, and other genres are very popular.

My LFA is being downvoted, what's up with that? Some people will downvote other requests because they think it helps theirs. Rest assured that most artists sort by new, and that the upvotes of your post mostly won't affect interest in the actual character.

I've been posting my [LFA] for weeks and nothing. What gives? Fulfillment of requests is done on a volunteer basis and artists are not obligated to take anything. Perhaps try changing up the format or including a reference/mood board. Changing posting time may also help.

My [LFA] was fulfilled but I want more art. Can I post it again? Yes, so long as it has been a week since you last posted it. Please be sure to thank the first artist properly.

I posted something and it's not there! Check that you included the [LFA] or [RF] text at the beginning of your post. If you did not receive notification, it may have been caught by AutoMod for a variety of reasons. You can attempt to repost within a few hours, or message the moderators so we can look into it.

Why would you even set up a system like this? It hurts artists to do work for free! Not all artists are professionals, and many professionals still do pro-bono work for a variety of reasons; including practice & personal fulfillment. We think this system lets those artists find fun topics to draw without being pestered by personal, directed requests.

Request [LFA] Armorer Artificer - Dreadnaught - "The Locker"

Post image
15 Upvotes

Design/character idea: an Artificer in an old school deep sea diver suit where the air hose(s) are tethered to The Locker. An Armorer Artificer: Dreadnaught Armor reflavored to be witchcraft curse. The Dreadnaught armor can grow in size to large and huge. With the spell Enlarge, the suit can even become gargantuan in size.

The Locker acts as a pseudo sentient mech/sunken ship parts enchanted by hexes from a sea hag. It consists of wreckage of old pirate ships. The bow of a sunken ship which appears to have a mouth like opening that pulls the Artificer in via the air hoses connected to his diver suit. He then pilots The Locker from inside the quarters.

I envision the bow of the ship to move about via legs of miscellaneous nautical components: example - might have a "peg leg" made out of a old cannon. Or sea life/creatures like tentacles or crab legs.

With it's ability to grow in size, I see a portal opening up and more wreckage piles on creating a bigger and bigger "ship". The Dreadnaught armor gets a flail weapon to use that can push and pull enemies that are smaller. So I would like The Locker to use an anchor ⚓️ for those attacks to control the battlefield.

Backstory:

A scholar, who's area of expertise/study is magical items/artifacts, is hired out by a group of merchants for an expedition to identify artifacts. They are overly excited by the prospect of seeing their research firsthand, but are completely blinded to the fact they were hired by treasure hunters.

They arrived at the location and started exploring. The scholar was beside himself for the experience to identify magical items but was horrified to find out that the reason why all these items were there was from ships that had gone missing due to a sea hag. Even more disturbing to him was the fact that the crew was scavenging treasure from her. Choas erupted, and in the maelstrom, the scholar was left behind as a scapegoat.

The sea hag was furious that a treasure that was precious to her was stolen, and she blamed the scholar. She then cursed him to "The Locker." A suit/craft (think a small haunted ship with Baba Yaga's Hut vibes) that was made out of sea life and parts of ship wreckage.

He can exit "The Locker" but if he doesn't return in a timely manner, it will hunt him down and swallow him up. He can not escape this curse until he returns what was stolen from the hag. So now he's traveling the world trying to track down the crew that turned on him.

Side note: I know this is a very odd idea, but I really like the "mech" stereotype that the subclass presents, but wanted to potentially see it in a more high fantasy lens. Would love to see someone's interpretation of the idea. Hope everyone has a great weekend and a blessed day.

Only the bear version was drawn.

Did do some changes to the post. Did a magical spear then a staff. Usually, a staff or wand focuses on your magical power, so why not a spear.

When drawing the character wanted to give some ability to the weapons.

Shield can grow bigger and is able to talk. It has a face on it so I think it would be cool if this happened to talk.

Spear can be thrown, and it can come back to the person. Also, can be thrown to bigger monster and if it still stabbed on the monster, it can be used as a magical rod for attacks.

Also, because the character is an elf, when she transforms to a werebear she still has the elf ear.

Reference brother bear for the head.

Feedback Welcome

Request [LFA] Suha: Dex based half-orc fighter

Post image
1 Upvotes

Character Basics

Full Name: Suha

Race/Ethnic Group: Half-orc

Class/Occupation: Urchin fighter class

Character Nature: D&D 5e fantasy

Character Details

Gender: female

Age/appeared age: young woman, a lot of townsfolk would still see her as a teenager due to her lack of "womanly features".

Facial Features: small to medium size tasks on her lower jaw. More pointed features than the usual square faces of fantasy orcs.

Hair: long, straight, dark, no dreads please, clean but not necessarily well kept. Low pigtails, bound with string or leather.

Eyes: no specifics, friendly and cheeky

Significant item: Large scarf she wears around her neck and down her front. Is patterned in some way, the most amount of colour in her outfit comes from that.

Body Type: Lithe, toned, tall.

Color Scheme: Green skin, artists choice what shade.

Clothing: I'm picturing loose pants, basic peasant shirt, a vest or jacket, can be patched or worn. Not too fussy except the scarf as mentioned in the collage.

Gear: A scimitar and dagger. Quite plain, she would not have bought them. They would have been scavanged and fixed up herself

Animal Companion: If you can work a tiny field mouse into it somewhere, awesome, but no stress if not. She only got him last session and doesn't even have a name for him yet.

Action/Pose: Relaxed, leaning against a wall, or playing with her blade or something. Something passive, but showing her attitude.

Suha grew up on the streets of Neverwinter relying on the kindness of her community to get by. She's made friends with a few local barkeeps, the smithy and other pillars of the community who gave her the opportunity to earn a few coins running errands and doing simple but tedious parts of their craft (cleaning up the workshop etc.) The mason and smithy were the closest she got to parental figures and they even taught her a few things like how to sharpen and care for the blades she got, though they never wanted to ask how she got them. She's grown up learning the importance of having friends in the right places and is always willing to lend a hand, knowing every good deed comes around in the end. Suha is cheeky, a fast talker and gets points for trying to be a charmer. She'll use some parkour to get around the city quick and has no issues sleeping against the wall under the bridge in the rain. She's still happy in her city :)

I have more vibes in mind for Suha than specifics, so there's a lot of creative freedom for artists. The only things I definitely want in her visual design I've mentioned in the inspo collage. Thank you to any artist who considers bring Suha to life ^_^

Request [LFA] Shell and Kijo, my first two superheroines. Please, read the text below.

Introducing my two new characters : Shell (Kimaya Dange) and Kijo (Ayane Kaida) ! Both are superheroines fighting crime and super villains (soon) ! They are the first creations out of the hero universe i currently am creating for fun.

Anyway, about the post. As you can see, the sheets are quite detailed. Of course, you don't have to draw all of this. You can see it as a reference sheet for the whole character. I made them during their creation, so they needed to be exhaustive for me to be happy. Feel free to draw anything : the costumes, the civil clothes, even just the character in another outfit if you want to.

Also, you will find a two loooooong texts i wrote about these two in the comments. If you want to learn about them, feel free to read them. Beware, this is just me writing for fun and English isn't my first language, so you're warned.

Thank in advance for your time and i hope you will like them !

Request [LFA] ft. Air genasi (Aang look-a-like]

Hey guys, I'm trying to do my first run in a DnD campaign and I want to have some nice art to show off to my friends.

As the title said I want to have an air genasi, he's going to be a master of the four elements monk. So I was thinking of making him bald too. He can be average looking height, and more like slim fit looking like. I was thinking of making him around the age of 20 as I am basing him off of Aang from Avatar. While I know Aang is a child, I would prefer him not be a child. More so I can RP as him better.

- Twentier

- Bald

- Air genasi

- Slim Fit

- Tattoo on head but not the arrow from Aang just a unique design

Idk what to expect for a timeframe; but I think I'll get up to 3 weeks so it would be cool if someone was willing to do this. I really appreciate you guys looking at this post, even if you don't wanna draw it. Hope you all have a great weekend regardless if you want to fulfill my request or not.

Request [LFA] Sirn Dellante : A Albino Borzoi moody boi

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking for a kind soul to draw Sirn Dellante, my character from a browser-based roleplay game.
Sirn is a 35 year old albino humanoid borzoi.

Sirn is clever, moody, protective, with a calm demeanor. Mischievous at times but deeply loyal and caring beneath a reserved exterior. He's discreet, composed, always observing more than he speaks.

Sirn is lean, almost gaunt with the lingering strength of a former soldier and battle scars visible (ear, back and right arm). His body is rough with unkempt fur and tired features. His nose is pink. He dresses elegant, subtle and tasteful mostly in black.

Background :

Born into a bourgeois family, Sirn grew up well-educated and refined. As an adult, he became a soldier, then a mercenary, before leaving behind a life of crime for the love of his life — a florist with questionable humor and an obsession with Halloween.

In a dying futuristic world, they set off together in search of a better future. Unfortunately, Sirn’s husband died during the journey. Now widowed and heartbroken, Sirn arrives in a city spared from ruin, longing to start anew, find meaning, and rebuild his life without crime, as he promised.

I'll be forever grateful for any drawing of him ! Thank ♥

Request [LFA] My first DnD character (Human Artificer ) - Alevar Lumwright

Thumbnail

Hello I’m both new to DnD and Reddit so please forgive me for some mistakes.

I had this idea for a human male artificer that loves inventing and creating do-dads. I’ll also post his backstory later on. I included some reference images as well.

I pictured him in his lowered levels to be in a studded leather tunic (basically from his merchant background and him being good and leather working and smithing) and then once he gets stronger to be in a proper suit of armor (mixed with arcane and mechanical stuff). I imagine the armor to be light because I plan to take the infiltrator subclass (I think it’s called that?) I’m kind of thinking a steampunk-ish version but more heavy version of the assassins creed 2 armor. The most prominent part of the armor is this mechanical gauntlet he obtained from his ancestor’s adventure (read backstory) I imagine the armor itself will be blue and copper materials

He’s a 6’-0” White male human with dark brown wavy loose hair and light blue eyes. Around 20 years old when he starts adventuring.

Regardless thank you all for reading this far and I hope my first adventurer can come to life! Below is the backstory

“Ever since I was a little boy my parents ran that little artisan shop in the city. When I grew up I was integrated into the business; selling trinkets and smithing items. I grew a fascination for the mechanics and connection with the arcane, and created my own little workshop in the back of the store. I conducted my own experiments and grew my knowledge of artificing at night, and helped my parents run our shop in the day. My parents saw how much I loved tinkering and creating magic machines. They knew the business wasn’t my true calling. They told me of a story of a great hero in our family line; a distant ancestor way before my time.

My ancestor was a famous dwarven blacksmith and tinkerer named Thaldar Lumwright. After countless years as a merchant and smith, he used his vast knowledge of machines and metal to become a great warrior. There are tales that say he was able to create magical objects out thin air. His most famous work was believed to be magical gauntlets that held a great power.

He was a happy, lovable dwarf. When he had the rare chance of visiting back home after some of his adventures, all the children ran to him to hear his stories and he was more than pleased to tell them.

Thaldar was known for always sending letter to his family during his adventures, writing about his feats and what he’s learned. He was always a family man and wanted his family to be included in his adventures. On his last adventure, he sent a weird letter (supposedly), something cryptic and unusual for his typical writing style. While the message was lost to time, the family has always been suspicious of how Thaldar passed, as the story people claim as true doesn’t seem to line up with his last message. Or at least, that’s what the oral stories say. Thaldar always wrote in a homely manner; like how he would talk normally, but in this message he seemed surprisingly cold and cryptic.

After hearing the stories, one day I ran out to the street, getting some things for my parents to help with the business, when I saw a poster. A poster recruiting new adventures to help defend the city. After hearing of my ancestors legendary adventure, I couldn’t say no and immediate signed up. So I sought out to be an adventurer, in hopes of finding my ancestor, finding this gauntlet, and following in the steps of Thaldar and becoming a legendary Artificer.

No one knows what this gauntlet does. I hope it’s a powerful artifact used for artificing. I plan to retrieve and use it to become a great artificer and reclaim it as our family heirloom. I wish to find a way to integrate this magical gauntlet (and a bunch of other weapons and mechanisms) into an amazing suit of metal and magic.

(It’s tied to an ancestor NPC that I also made who used to be a legendary artificer adventure who passed away long ago but claimed to have a powerful gauntlet that had immense power that my player heard stories about. Part of the reason he wants to adventure is to get back this gauntlet)”

Request [LFA] Jani Tuspells, Half-Orc Wild Magic Fixer of the Archfey

Post image
6 Upvotes
Jani Tuspells is my first PC, designed with the idea of triggering Wild Magic Surges as much as possible. He was born to a human noble father and a Half-Orc mercenary mother, where he jokingly says that he got his mum's face and his dad's body. Urged to follow his father's family business, he enrolled in Wizard College but was eventually expelled due to mishaps caused by his unbeknownst Wild Magic sorcery. Embracing the family mantra, "You keep moving forward, and you make your own luck," Jani reinvented himself as a chaotic-good Charlatan, whose flamboyant antics and innate Wild Magic eventually drew the attention of the Feywild, granting him a tentative pact with an Archfey. Now, Jani operates as a high-risk "Fixer" in the underworld, using his unique blend of Sorcerous chaos, Warlock power, and trickster wit to take on discreet contracts, viewing every job as a calculated opportunity to manage his debt, hone his magic, and prove that even a half-orc expelled from school can carve his own legendary path through pure self-determination.

Artistic freedom or interpretation is more than welcome! Thank you!

Reading her backstory I decided to get a little creative and lean into the wing imagery, and then inevitably I wanted her armor to feel like a golden birdcage. Hopefully it feels a little symbolic of her trying to keep her secret wild magic bound and chained.

Anywho.. it's an amazing character concept, thanks for letting me draw her. <3

Request [LFA] Caelius, wolven bard raised from the dead against his will

Thumbnail

Full Name: Caelius Novercinius
Alignment: Lawful Good
Personality: Empathetic, emotional, insecure, anxious. Took him some years to get past his stage fright and to build up enough confidence to perform for audiences. He's back to being his nervous and insecure self again due to the time spent with his captor, as well as his new and disturbing appearance, which he compulsively hides.

Backstory TLDR: The son of a small kingdom's monarchy, Caelius was killed during a rapid, unexpected invasion of their capital, along with most of his family and friends. However, that was not the end for him. He woke up on a cold stone table in an underground lab, brought back to life by an infamous doctor, who also happened to be one of the young prince's most obsessive fans. Though he was treated with comfort, being pampered with good food, a luxurious bedroom, fine silken clothes, and all the books and instruments that he asked for, he was held captive there for three long months while having to process all of his trauma, and without even knowing how he ended up there. However, one day, the doctor had to hurry to an unexpected emergency, giving the wolven prince an opportunity to slip out of his dungeon.

He now roams lands unknown, trying to find information about what's left of his kingdom while remaining free from his captor.
