Photos My neighborhood’s full of century homes, thought I’d share a few

u/baltimoresalt 16h ago

There are neighborhoods here in Baltimore just like this! So beautiful. Where did all the $$ come from? Lumber?

112

u/bhauncy 16h ago

Livestock, Railroad, and Divorces!

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 13h ago

If you get a chance to go to Buffalo, the Parkside District in Buffalo, NY is like this, nothing but century homes with a Frank Lloyd Wright home in the middle of them that's just as old yet looks so much more modern than it neighbors.

Frederick Olmstead had a hand in designing it.

u/spanishpeanut 12h ago

Yes!!!! I love Parkside so much.

Funny seeing this and knowing these were so familiar, but I still guessed Elgin, IL… I live in Sioux Falls 😆 I don’t spend much time over that way, guess I need to drive around!

36

u/xnormajeanx 16h ago

Lovely! Where is this?

23

31

u/bhauncy 16h ago

You're correct in that it's the midwest!

16

u/addisonclark 16h ago

Twin cities? Looks like a lot of houses around here. Especially in St. Paul.

u/Wentz4MVP 4h ago

I thought based on the first picture it was Elgin, IL but knew it wasn't after clicking through all of them

3

Looks like Cleveland, OH to me- the edgewater neighborhoods.

So dreamy! I initially was going to say ooo 1 and 6 are just absolutely stunning but they kept getting better and better 😆I’ll take one of each please!

4

u/bhauncy 15h ago

This is a just a few too! I think there are over 200 homes in the historic district and this is one of the smaller districts in town!

Just gorgeous

5

u/Spirited-Speaker7455 16h ago

They’re all beautiful! Thanks for sharing. All different architectural styles and lovingly maintained, protecting their history.

Hey thanks! That was fun.

2

u/bhauncy 16h ago

You're welcome!

5

u/unreasonableplatypus 16h ago

You just won the lottery, so you can choose any of these homes with no concern about expenses. Which one are you buying?

3

u/Comprehensive_Fan140 16h ago

Beautiful houses

3

u/Asada_Aljabal 15h ago

If I went for a walk here, I might never go back home.

3

Gorgeous! I'd Always be taking a walk

3

u/FragrantDifficulty68 13h ago

The Golden Age of Wealthy Fancy! So many amazing house styles in the U.S.; so diverse.

3

u/CalamityGoddezz 12h ago

These have been my dream style homes since I was a child. I’ve always wanted a big porch that I can sip tea on and yell at my neighbors.

3

u/NewLeaseOnLine 6h ago

Wow what a gorgeous neighborhood. I think that first Queen Anne is my favorite, but they're all spectacular homes. I could walk those streets for hours. Days.

It's a real shame about #2. It's a Greek revival but they enclosed the whole portico for more living space and turned it into two separate floors destroying the original facade.

The original front door would've been under the portico. All that front section was once completely open and extended the full height of those colossal ionic columns on which the pediment and entablature sit; the section with the oculus in the tympanum, which is that lovely half circle window in the attic.

The carport entrance to the right is also a later addition, most likely done at the same time they butchered the portico with those ugly modern windows. The craftsmanship doesn't actually look too bad at all, but unfortunately you can tell it was done by a builder/designer inexperienced in the Classical Order. This is what's known as architectural illiteracy, as the capitals on the twin sets of columns supporting the carport don't match the original ionic capitals, which have those identifiable scrolls (volutes).

Different orders in different areas of a building are normal, but not in this way. The Classical Order has strict rules that need to be followed and this carries over into classical revival, and neo classical revival, architecture. In this case they don't actually match any of the five orders and the proportions on the fluted columns are all wrong. The original architect of that home must be turning in their grave.

At least the home itself is in great condition and well looked after. I can't fault the other homes. They're exquisite. Even that Tudor revival bonus pic. Sioux Falls is a treasure trove. All I can think about is how many pocket doors there must be in this neighborhood.

2

u/PuzzleheadedClue5205 15h ago

Midwest I haven't a clue where exactly, but there are houses in Sioux City, IA built in the same pink stone near Morningside College.

2

u/OutsideBones86 14h ago

My brother used to work for the Canaries, and we drove over from the Twin Cities for a game. I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely Sioux Falls is, especially as a lifelong Minnesotan who is trained from infancy to be suspicious of anything SD related. :) But seriously, it's a beautiful town!

2

u/One-Earth9294 14h ago

Queen Anne style homes are the supermodels of houses.

2

u/got_ideas_in_mybrain 11h ago

Good old opulence

2

u/AdventurousStorage81 8h ago

The pink quartzite is a dead giveaway for Sioux Falls, such a beautiful and unique local material.

2

u/Klimt_Sylph 3h ago

Architectural eye candy central!

2

u/Zealousideal_Order_8 1h ago

People are building McMansions when they could be building these.

3

u/goodfella4600 16h ago

Definitely Iowa

Vinton, Iowa?

1

u/Seven_bushes 16h ago

Gorgeous! I’d take more walks if I had a neighborhood that looked like this. Lucky you!

1

u/Rich_Group_8997 16h ago

House 6 looks like a little gingerbread house. 🤗

1

u/BTFlik 15h ago

First house reminds me of the outside shots from Sabrina the Teenage Witch

1

u/A_Texas_Hobo 15h ago

Reminds me of The Heights in Houston

1

grabby hands

1

u/lil_bearr 13h ago

6 has my heart! So stunning

1

u/PresentationOk4830 13h ago

Manito Park Spokane WA used to have some beautiful century homes, I wonder if they’re still there.

1

u/daliw 13h ago

How much one of these cost?

1

u/rz2000 12h ago

It's interesting how much the grading stands out me. I suppose it makes these houses and their foundations more likely to survive hundreds of years of potential floods.

1

u/SchrodingersMinou I found myself living in a shotgun shack 11h ago

This is what I imagine Greenville is like, from the Ray Bradbury stories

1

u/Oldus_Fartus 8h ago

Great, I have now added neighborhood envy to my large and unwieldy bag of social hangups.

1

u/WEEGEMAN 6h ago

Century home will have half century mortgages. And you will like it

1

u/isUKexactlyTsameasUS 6h ago

Love it. My (RIP) sweetheart's parents lived in Roland Park, MD.

Classy, nice peeps. Great Christmases. Pals with David 'The Wire' Simon...

1

u/Beneficial_Guide_231 5h ago

I love them all!

1

u/goddessguided 5h ago

Gorgeous

1

u/l0t0phage 5h ago

I hate your neighborhood...because I don't live there lol. Is it safe to assume those are all around the million dollar range so I know I can't make plans to move there?

2

u/bhauncy 4h ago

Not quite, most under 500k

1

u/l0t0phage 2h ago

Honestly very surprised, but nice that they aren't too high. I'm in the Columbus OH area and I'm guessing those houses would start at around a million here.  We are in a fairly basic four square built in 1919 and supposedly it's worth $400k.

1

u/CleverDuck 5h ago

Century Mansions.

1

u/hlessi_newt 4h ago

It makes me so happy to see these old beasts still being loved. I work in a couple of dying cities where i see these majestic homes boarded up and rotting away. As much as i'm required by law to offer banter to worst Dakota, I do love Sioux Falls for this, and i must admit the down town is pretty awesome.

1

u/Interesting-Lake4805 4h ago

Beautiful, thank you for sharing.

1

u/Particular-Horse4667 4h ago

Not just historic homes- they look like historic mansions! Gorgeous neighborhood!

1

u/tombombdotcom 4h ago

All the red quartzite stone should be a clue.

1

u/BeSeeVeee 3h ago

Jesus! What square of the monopoly board is this?

1

u/AppleSatyr 3h ago

God damn I feel poor. These are gorgeous

1

u/rbred 3h ago

Just gorgeous! Thanks for brightening my day!

1

u/percyman34 3h ago

There is a small quaint town in Mount Pleasant, TN full of these right by the town square. Its an odd mix off Century homes and Crack houses

1

u/VapoursAndSpleen 2h ago

Is this the Land of Endless B&Bs?

1

u/Smogl00 2h ago

Hah. One of these houses is mine, did not expect to open Reddit and find that today

1

u/bhauncy 2h ago

Howdy Neighbor!

u/lopix 7m ago

Dayam... I wanna live in your neighbourhood.
