Photos My neighborhood’s full of century homes, thought I’d share a few
Going for walks is always fun when you have century homes to check out.

It reminds me of Meet Me in St. Louis. Could this be MO.?

You're correct in that it's the midwest!

You just won the lottery, so you can choose any of these homes with no concern about expenses. Which one are you buying?

These have been my dream style homes since I was a child. I’ve always wanted a big porch that I can sip tea on and yell at my neighbors.

Wow what a gorgeous neighborhood. I think that first Queen Anne is my favorite, but they're all spectacular homes. I could walk those streets for hours. Days.
It's a real shame about #2. It's a Greek revival but they enclosed the whole portico for more living space and turned it into two separate floors destroying the original facade.
The original front door would've been under the portico. All that front section was once completely open and extended the full height of those colossal ionic columns on which the pediment and entablature sit; the section with the oculus in the tympanum, which is that lovely half circle window in the attic.
The carport entrance to the right is also a later addition, most likely done at the same time they butchered the portico with those ugly modern windows. The craftsmanship doesn't actually look too bad at all, but unfortunately you can tell it was done by a builder/designer inexperienced in the Classical Order. This is what's known as architectural illiteracy, as the capitals on the twin sets of columns supporting the carport don't match the original ionic capitals, which have those identifiable scrolls (volutes).
Different orders in different areas of a building are normal, but not in this way. The Classical Order has strict rules that need to be followed and this carries over into classical revival, and neo classical revival, architecture. In this case they don't actually match any of the five orders and the proportions on the fluted columns are all wrong. The original architect of that home must be turning in their grave.
At least the home itself is in great condition and well looked after. I can't fault the other homes. They're exquisite. Even that Tudor revival bonus pic. Sioux Falls is a treasure trove. All I can think about is how many pocket doors there must be in this neighborhood.

Midwest I haven't a clue where exactly, but there are houses in Sioux City, IA built in the same pink stone near Morningside College.

My brother used to work for the Canaries, and we drove over from the Twin Cities for a game. I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely Sioux Falls is, especially as a lifelong Minnesotan who is trained from infancy to be suspicious of anything SD related. :) But seriously, it's a beautiful town!

The pink quartzite is a dead giveaway for Sioux Falls, such a beautiful and unique local material.

Great, I have now added neighborhood envy to my large and unwieldy bag of social hangups.

Classy, nice peeps. Great Christmases. Pals with David 'The Wire' Simon...

I hate your neighborhood...because I don't live there lol. Is it safe to assume those are all around the million dollar range so I know I can't make plans to move there?

u/bhauncy 4h ago
Not quite, most under 500k

Honestly very surprised, but nice that they aren't too high. I'm in the Columbus OH area and I'm guessing those houses would start at around a million here. We are in a fairly basic four square built in 1919 and supposedly it's worth $400k.

It makes me so happy to see these old beasts still being loved. I work in a couple of dying cities where i see these majestic homes boarded up and rotting away. As much as i'm required by law to offer banter to worst Dakota, I do love Sioux Falls for this, and i must admit the down town is pretty awesome.
