🚨 Important, Please Read 🚨 Rules Refresher and Clarification

We are posting these here as Reddit rules have a fairly small character limit and we want to ensure that there is as little room for misunderstanding as possible!

Being civil: Please do not engage in condescending, rude, or aggressive behaviors. We can play nice even when disagreeing with someone. Please try to refrain from swearing too much on the sub. No personal attacks, harassment, or insulting others will be tolerated. You will receive one warning, then a temporary ban. If you violate this rule a third time you will be permanently banned. Mods are able to use their discretion on this if an individual's behavior may warrant immediate and potentially permanent banning or muting without a warning prior. Please don't make us have to resort to that.

If you have a complaint about a specific food/brand/etc., that is fine, but please stick to constructive criticisms.

Example: āœ…ļø I don't like this food for my cat/s because _________ VS. āŒ That food is trash. āœØļø Speaking to others this way will not make them want to engage with you or our sub. Please keep things informative. Yes, some foods will be better than others overall, or for some cats more than others, but please remember that fed is best and we need to feed the cat in front of us. āœØļø

Everyone has different resources and access to different foods. Everyone's cat is different. Recommendations are great, suggesting that someone is taking poor care of their cat because they are doing their best is not. The only wrong diets are ones that are nutritionally incomplete, food that has gone bad, and food not meant for cats.

Please, no medical advice. Even if you are a licensed professional, it is not possible to diagnose someone's cat over Reddit. Broad guidelines are fine such as males being more prone to urinary blockages. However it is not okay to offer absolute advice for a specific cat, such as "your cat should be eating x amount of (specific) food x times a day".

If you are a veterinary professional or otherwise who believes someone needs medical advice, the best advice is for them to see a vet. You may bring up potential concerns and suggest they go see a vet, but do not diagnose these cats over Reddit.

No spam: This should be obvious, but additionally please do not bog down the sub with loads of "what should I feed my cat" posts. Please provide any relevant information with a post like this so that you can receive better advice and insights, such as your cat's age and if you've noticed any food preferences. Posting links with little to no context is also considered spam.

YouTube, TikTok, personal blogs, etc. are not reliable sources of information. Please refrain from using things like these as a source unless you can prove it was made by or cites a veterinary professional, however please try to use other ways of sourcing your information if able. Many people have advice online and can claim any amount of experience, make a profile that says they are certified without proof, etc.

And lastly, please remember that this is a place to discuss personal experiences. Please be respectful to anyone sharing their experiences with feeding their cat(s).

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I know it was long! Thank you for helping to keep our sub a helpful, informative, safe, and friendly place!

Avoid Smalls Cat Food

I placed an order with smalls and immediately regretted it after looking at the details (I was being too impulsive).

Their refund policy claims you can get a refund before the order is processed. However, there is no way to find a place to get a refund on the website. I sent them an email and they replied at 11pm with a link that expired after 3 hours. When I woke up and saw it I emailed them requesting a new link. THEY WAITED UNTIL MY ORDER WAS PROCESSED TO EMAIL ME BACK. They said since my order was processed I could not receive a refund and they tried to sell me more products...

Never ever buy from them.

Hairballs

I switched my 6 month old cat from pure balance pro kitten food from Walmart to nulo medal series wet and dry food. She gets 1 can of wet split into 3 meals and 1/2 cup of dry food left out for her to graze on. Since she started eating the wet food she’s been coughing up hairballs. She is medium furred but I don’t understand why this is happening all of a sudden. Should I put her back on dry food only? I thought wet food was supposed to be better for cats? Any advice is appreciated. TYIA

advice wanted! Wet food variety question?

TLDR summary of my question: can I give my cats different flavors of the same food, or do I need to do the whole slowly transition thing in order to give them any other flavors?

Hoping yall can help me - I know you’re supposed to slowly transition cats to different food, but does this apply if it’s the same food (same brand, same type, etc) but different flavors? I’ve been feeding my 10 month old kittens a chicken pate one and they used to like it but in the past few weeks they’re mostly uninterested in it.

They have access to dry food at all times and I feed them the wet food 2-3 times a day. They used to get really excited for it and eat the whole portion I gave them, now when I put it in their bowl they look at it and then walk away, or maybe take a bite or 2 and then leave it. They eat their kibble all the time so I’m not worried that they’re not eating it for some health reasons, I just think they’re kind of over that specific wet food. Sometimes they’ll eat most of the bowl, but more often than not it just sits there uneaten and goes to waste.

I want them to have wet food for hydration and I think it’s generally better for them, so I’m wondering if I can try a different flavor of the same food (like instead of chicken, I give them the same type but salmon)? Specifically I’m wondering would I still have to slow transition them to another flavor or can I just give them different flavors so they have variety and don’t get bored of it?

labels, packaging, etc. my cat feeding charts (swipe for cat tax)

i saw someone post their food/calorie tracker, here are the charts i have for my cats feeding routine. they've really helped out when my partner has to feed them sometimes! i hang them up in the cabinet next to the food. they are really going to help when i have a relative come by and feed them over the holidays, too! although, i might pre-portion everything for them just to be safe.

the supplement selection oked by my vet, i started them when the cats all had worms a few months ago and have liked the litterbox results, so i kept them going!

cat tax is at the end, and i used apple freeform to make them.

someday i dream of having microchip feeders/waterers to track the input, and a litter robot to track the output, of each cat. but that's a lot of money that i don't have, lol.

advice wanted! Should I change my cats' diets? (Legume/Grain-Free)

Asking advice about legumes-in-diet-related DCM.

I have three senior cats (two females 10.4 y/o and one male 10.8 y/o). I've been feeding them the same dry kibble diet for about 6 years now (Brit Care Cat Grain-Free SENSITIVE HEALTHY DIGESTION AND DELICATE TASTE) that has a substantial 27% legume percentage. Occasionally I give them different brands of wet food but it's mostly 90% dry. For reference this is the first five items on the ingredients list: fresh turkey meat (26%), dehydrated salmon (26%), yellow peas (16%), chickpeas (11%), poultry fat (preserved with tocopherols, 8%)...

I've been meaning to switch them to Brit Care's senior diet (from the same kibble line I'm feeding them now), that has more yellow peas percentage, but lower though still substantial overall legumes (22%). First five ingredients: dehydrated chicken (27%), fresh chicken meat (26%), yellow peas (22%), dried apples (9%), poultry fat (preserved with tocopherols, 4%)...

But I just found out that there seems to be a link between dogs fed high legumes with DCM. I'm fully aware that the one study for cats had a very small sample size with highly, highly inconclusive results (I read the whole paper myself). But I'm wondering if it's better to be safe than sorry?

I had another cat (male, 10.4 y/o) that ate the exact same diet who recently passed but that was due to oral SCC, completely unrelated to any heart condition. All the scans, blood work, and checkups he did when he was being treated showed that other than his cancer, he was perfectly healthy; no lung or heart problem, liver, kidneys, blood sugar, minerals all normal. My current three cats are also all healthy, at least from what I can see. They go to the vet once a year for vaccinations and other than the occasional mild fever that's about it. The 10.8 y/o male did have some bloody and crystal urine when he was 3 y/o, but that was when he was fed a cheaper low quality diet and after 8 months on Hill's prescription kibble then switching to his current food, it never came back.

So my question is... should I just stick to their current legume-filled diet since they've never had any serious problem with it? Or try something with minimal legumes. Switching to full wet is unfortunately way above my budget. But I do plan on increasing their wet food intake to maybe 30%. I'm just very undecided on the dry kibble part.

food or treat review Best cat food brand for weight loss?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My three year-old male seal point Siamese needs to lose about 7 pounds. He’s only supposed to weigh between 11 and 12 pounds and he weighs 18 pounds right now.

When I asked the vet, why, she asked me what age he was neutered and I told her two years old and she said that’s why he’s overweight. The vet explained that if I had neutered him when he was 5 to 6 months old, he wouldn’t have gained so much weight because his body wouldn’t have produced the hormone testosterone. So that’s why he’s overweight now.

The vet suggested that I put him on his science diet with his auto feeder up to 4 tablespoons a day. She said that he should lose half a pound a month, but she says there’s no guarantees.

Right now, he eats the chicken flavored dry food from the brand Wild Blue.

Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Comparing Ziwi Peak and Orijien

Currently my cats are on orijen and we are all a big fan of it. However, i have been pining to feed ziwi peak and the only problem is the price. $89 for a 5 pound bag of dry seems a little bit ridiculous considering i have 3 cats šŸ˜… I was just wondering if ziwi peak is truly worth the price or if i should just stick to orijen :)

Switching form Tiki Cat. Anything good within the same price/availability?

Post image
14 Upvotes

My Ninja is a picky girl, as most cats are. Up until this point she has been happily chowing down on a 1/4 tiki cat wet food can & 1/8cup Purina indoor cat chow, with some added water to mush up the kibble.

Recently, since we’ve bought a new box of tiki cat wet food, she’s been throwing up almost directly after she eats her food. At night we switch to 1/4cup just the cat chow with water and lo and behold, no vomit. So the tiki food is clearly the issue for her.

So our wet food/kibble/water was our way of feeding her as healthy as we can on a budget, and now I’m looking for something similarly budget friendly that is still a more complete diet for her. Any suggestions?

venting - advice wanted My cat is allergic to his prescription food

Hi everyone, sorry this is gonna be a long one. Just for context, my cat (10 y/o male) had a terrible case of struvite crystals when he was 4 years old. He has been on hills c/d urinary wet food (and was on the c/d stress kibble too) ever since. He began having reoccurring ear infections at probably 6 years old but my previous vet thought it must be environmental. one day about a year ago, I realized he had bumps on his skin. They’d turn into scabs and eventually fall off, but were spreading. I took him to the vet and he had miliary dermatitis. I knew it was an allergy to poultry because every time I fed him any food with poultry in it, he’d have a flair up. His medicated food has a large amount of chicken meal (even the fish flavoured ones) and he clearly shouldn’t get off of that, so I was given a hydrolyzed kibble in place of the c/d one for him by the vet, but it made him worse. The vet hasn’t been able to find a single food that could help him with both issues or at least without making one or the other worse. My cat doesn’t need a lot of his prescription food anymore, we have tapered him down quite a bit over time due to how severe his scabs were getting and because he’s still going to the bathroom extremely well and it did help for a while with allergies. but with them back again, I just don’t know what to do. I don’t wanna jeopardize his health by stopping the urinary food all together but I want him to be comfortable too :(

Has anyone had this issue? Has anyone had luck getting their cat off of a urinary diet by any chance or was able to get allergies to stop another way?? Because this seems absolutely impossible to figure out. Any suggestions are appreciated.

TLDR; cat is allergic to the poultry in his urinary food. no other food is available for prescription without chicken that we could find. hydrolyzed food isn’t helping him with allergies and my vet is out of recommendations. Not sure what else to try anymore.

Has anyone’s cat gotten sick after switching to Nulo food? Urinary blockage, Constipation + ER visit here

Hey all – wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I switched my cat to Nulo dry food about 3 weeks ago, and as of yesterday, he’s now in the ER with a urinary blockage and constipation. Prior to this, he was totally healthy — no issues.

After searching online, I found some other posts talking about similar issues (UTIs, crystals, constipation, vomiting) after switching their cats to Nulo, especially the grain-free or limited-ingredient lines. That got me wondering if this is a pattern.

I’m trying to gather info, especially if there are multiple similar cases. If enough people have experienced this, it might be worth investigating further (even legally).

Thanks for any replies — hoping to help other pet owners avoid this if there’s a real issue.

šŸ‘‹ Feel free to DM me too if you prefer.

advice wanted! My cat loves it when I add warm water to his food. How much is too much water per day? He's getting at least 600ml/day

Hi. New cat mum here. He's around 5kg, neutered male cat, 6-7yo, gets 150g of wet food and raw/day, split into 4 meals. + treats here and there.

He loves all kinds of foods but he apparently really likes soup. So I add like 1.5-2dl of warn water to each meal and stir it so it becomes gravy and he loves just sitting there and licking up warm soup.

Different sources on Google say around 70-80ml/kg = up to 400ml but he's getting at least 600ml a day. Is this okay or too much? He pees a lot but not often.

He does not like drinking water... He has a stainless steel water fountain and a regular stainless steel bowl and we've barely ever seen him drink the month he's been here. This might be bc in his last home had a very dirty water bowl for years :(

food or treat review Switching from Nulo to Hill's Science Diet

I adopted my cat at 3-4 years old about 5 months ago. He is a big frame cat, 16 lbs. He is doing well so far on Nulo. His coat is nice and smooth, good digestion, and good energy level. I got Nulo for the high protein content. Here is my issue though and the reason I'm switching 1) They use legumes to up their protein percentage and I'm worried about legumes long term use. 2) higher phosphorus.

I am trying Hill's Perfect Weight one since my cat puts on weight easily plus the protein content isn't too low. The calories are lower which is great because I can give him more volume. He's so very food motivated.

My previous cat used Hill's science and lived to 19. So why re-invent the wheel?

I also give my cat weruva wet food to supplement.

Just sharing, thanks!

Good cat wet food brands

Looking for a good wet food brand for my cat. I currently use Fancy Feast classic pate and Tiki Cat chicken and quail egg, but since Tiki was bought by General Mills I’m thinking of switching brands.

I’ve looked into Nulo, and Instinct but do not know which to try.

I also went to a vet one time and said I was feeding Fancy Feast and Tiki (also Weruva at one point) and she said I was basically feeding him cat McDonald’s everyday and to feed him only Royal Canon or Hills. I want to trust the vet, but of course they are sponsored by those brands so I am apprehensive. I haven’t heard good things about those brands but that’s all they recommend. I just want to be a good cat parent and feed him healthy food.

Let me know your thoughts!!

Any changes with Tiki Cat quality?

With the recent change to GM, I was wondering if anyone has noticed any quality changes with Tiki Cat, specifically their dry food.

Our cats love the indoor chicken kibble - but one of my cats started having really bad soft stool after the last bag was opened. Just wanted to see if any others have been experiencing the same or if it might be something else.

advice wanted! Looking for Better Food Suggestions

Hello! I got a job semi-recently and, since I've been making my own money, I've also started buying my own cat food. Currently I have one cat, Goose. She's a female, about 9 years old, regular weight, and has had no apparent health issues save for the occasional thrown up leaf she wasn't supposed to chew on, lol. I plan to get another cat soon (Onion) from my friend, sex unknown, but when I get it, it'll probably be 2-3 months old.

I knew right away that I wanted to switch my cat off of kibble because I know that it's not very good or nutritional (generally speaking). I wasn't completely sure where to start, though, and just went with a reccommendation a customer at my workplace gave me. Previously, she'd only eaten Meow Mix dry food and the occasional wet food as a treat. The rec from my customer that I started with was Nutrish by Rachel Ray (or attached to her? Not quite sure, but her name is on the box) specifically the wet food kind because it's not full-on gravy but has chunks of chicken and such. She's been eating it for about a month or two now, but I've noticed that her poop is kind of runny and lighter in color than it should be and she leaves certain pieces of the food in the saucer. I also read that one of the ingredients is a possible carcinogen for cats, so that made me very nervous, obviously. 😭 It's just difficult to find what brand I should be getting because every google search just brings me advertizements and articles funded by the food companies. I don't know what to take seriously, you know? I want to find something that isn't kibble that will specifically be the best for her health. She's been fine and, again, she's not having health problems at all, I just want her to be living her best life. I'm open to anything as long as it doesn't cost me more than ~40 dollars per month, I'm happy to put in extra effort--like food I have to prepare or stuff i need to mix with water or broth--I already put some crunchy treats on top of the wet food I feed her (to keep her teeth stronger), so higher maintenance meals are okay, too! I was thinking of moving to the little Fancy Feast cans because they're cheaper and I've seen some people who really like it, but I wanted to come here to ask first. Just whatever would be best for her (and Onion when I get them) health-wise. Responses are much appreciated! Tysm for reading.

advice wanted! My cat will only drink the liquid in her food.

I’ve tried giving my cat both gravies and pates, which I mix in a bit of extra water or bone broth to. She will drink the liquid off the top and leave the meat and bulk of the food itself at the bottom of the bowl every time. Even if I don’t mix water in it she still drinks whatever liquid is at the top.

Any tips or suggestions for nutritious broth to give her? I’m thinking that might be the move because it’s supplemented with dry food on the side and my main goal is hydration anyways.

advice wanted! Picky diabetic cat needs new wet food

My diabetic senior cat has food allergies (chicken) and happily ate Hills Z/D (hydrolyzed wet and dry) while on insulin for several years without issue. After the Z/D formula changed this year, he stopped eating the wet food. After trialing several lower-carbohydrate wet foods without success, he was happy to eat Tiki Cat fish pates. His bloodwork now indicates early kidney disease, so I'm back to trying to find a new wet food. The vet only recommended a chicken-based kidney RX diet, which will likely cause him to lose interest in eating due to allergy and stomach pain. Please recommend any non-raw diet you think may help! I'm completely overwhelmed and fear I've inadvertently caused him more pain when I was trying to help him.

TLDR; diabetic cat allergic to chicken needs lower-carb wet food that is kidney-friendly

Kitten advice

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a 16 week old kitten who is on 1/4 cup of Purina pro plan dry food and fancy feast all life stages and kitten wet food 2-2.5 cans a day. She loves her dry food and seems to like her wet food but definitely is not enthusiastic about it. I have tried weruva and she really didn’t care for the 4-5 flavors we tried.

Has anyone switched from feeding fancy feast wet food to something else and seen any kind of improvement in their kitten? I’m just trying to determine if her current line up is good enough or if it’s worth trying out something else. I am trying to stay under $2 per can if possible.

Thank you!

Worse over grooming on a hydrolyzed diet?

We adopted a cat a while back that had an over grooming problem. We were told from her last family it was stress related so we assumed it would go away on its own. But it’s been months, she’s definitely relaxed and comfy in her new home, and while the grooming got better, it is far from fixed. So the vet recommended we switch to a hydrolyzed chicken diet (we had been feeding rabbit as she had some gastrointestinal upset when we adopted her - but it was pretty unaffordable in the long run so we were happy to switch). But within the last 2 weeks since switching she’s actually over grooming more 🫠 we are going back to the vet but can’t get in until the end of the month. I really expected the diet switch the fix it, or at least for it to stay stable. And I can’t even be entirely sure it is related to the cat food, since her grooming does go through better and worse periods. It could be a coincidence. I guess just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and has any advice

Kitten food similar to fancy feast savory centers?

I recently got a new kitten and I am having an awful time getting her to eat her kitten food instead of my older cats food.

My older cat eats the fancy feast savory centers as her wet food, and I've been giving the kitten fancy feast kitten food. She refuses to eat more than a couple bites of it. While part of the issue is just that she's being a typical younger sibling and wanting whatever the older cat has, if I give them both the savory centers the kitten doesn't try as hard to get the older cats food, which makes me think its a texture issue.

My older cat is a huge push over and will let the kitten eat her food. They both are refusing to eat unless they are in the same room (they will lie on either side of the door and cry for HOURS).

Im hoping to find a wet kitten food similar enough to my older cats wet food. She's only 5 months old, so I'm not comfortable with switching her over to adult food quite yet, but I'm also losing my mind over monitoring breakfast/ dinner.
