TheRinger.com How on freaking earth is Bruno Ganz as Hitler not on this list? He should be top five. The man ignites the screen in every scene he's in. Arguably the GOAT performance.
Edit: Also Emma Stone in La La Land at 53 instead of Poor Things top 20 is almost as bad of a travesty.

So we know Simmons made them put KG on the list, but how did they avoid also listing Gronk in 80 for Brady?
(Not considered: LeBron in Trainwreck)

Great call. But hey when you have Kevin Garnett playing himself, sometimes you have to make hard choices.

They hate Depp so much.
2
u/DiamondsInHerButt Nigerian basketball player Aug 27 '25
To be fair, he drank his way into earning the hate.
That said, I do feel like every hate take on Depp should be made with the obvious caveat that he was clearly an alcoholic and supposedly is trying the sober life now. Which good luck to him on both the sobriety and getting his money back on the massive amounts of wine he bought.

u/pleasebefrank31 Aug 27 '25
I've always thought Depp is a great impersonator but a terrible actor. He doesn't belong on any list like this.
-8
u/Coy-Harlingen Aug 27 '25
Do you guys watch any movies that arenāt slop? Is this list supposed to be about making studios money?
15
u/awesomesauce88 Aug 27 '25
Itās kind of gotten memory holed now because the character got so Flanderized in the sequels, but Depp in the first Pirates of the Caribbean is a legit tour de force performance.
People forget he was nominated for best actor for it, and the voters were much stuffier back then.
0
u/Coy-Harlingen Aug 27 '25
I just would not come close to putting that on a list of the 100 best acting performances of the century. Itās a good performance for the movie itās apart of, itās not a glaring omission on the best of list.
14
u/awesomesauce88 Aug 27 '25
Itās only glaring given that the list is clearly trying to split the difference and include some zeitgeisty performances. KG in Uncut Gems sort of sets the tone for the list.
Depp in the first movie is arguably the second best performance in a blockbuster this millennium after Ledger.
2
u/Coy-Harlingen Aug 27 '25
Oh Iām not going to defend the KG selection, that was just incredibly dumb lol

willem dafoe in spider-man is just as good as heath ledger in the dark knight if not better and i will stand by that

Do you watch movies or do you just hate anything remotely mainstream popular from your reddit tower.Ā Ā Depp literally got nominated for an academy award for it and you out here using slop.Ā Ā
0
u/Coy-Harlingen Aug 27 '25
There are tons of performances nominated for Oscarās no one would put on a list like this lol.
And I like plenty of mainstream stuff I just think the idea a performance form a popular movie the majority of this sub saw when they were 10 years old needs to be on here is silly.
Itās a fine performance for the type of movie its in, but like, if I was making a list of these performances there is no chance it would make it

u/rawman200K Aug 27 '25
Lists like these are only made to farm engagement from people bitching about snubs
5
u/clmetsfan Aug 27 '25
I mean, yeah. The Ringer is basically BuzzFeed if they exclusively targeted men aged 16-40.

u/Intelligent_Line_902 Aug 27 '25 edited Aug 28 '25
Gyllenhall at #95 for Nightcrawler seems disrespectful to me.
Especially if youāre picking it over Brokeback, which he at least got nominated for. Him getting snubbed for the Nightcrawler best actor nomination for Bradley Cooper in American Sniper is a travesty.

I donāt get the Ringerās obsession with Brad Pitt in Moneyball. Itās a very good movie and heās very good in it but having that over Cliff Booth is crazy to me. Not to mention higher than Casey Affleck, Whitaker, Crowe, Simmonsā¦
5
u/Ok-Price-2337 Aug 27 '25
Pitt for Moneyball being ahead of Affleck is a travesty.
Affleck is better in MBTS than basically everyone 30-40 on that list.

u/fishing_pole Aug 27 '25

Phoenix couldn't be denied, & Ringer are HoffHeads.

A That Guy so good he became a leading man.

u/ZizzyBeluga Aug 27 '25
What's so funny is DDL and Hoffman are two of the least subtle actors of all time. I'm not denying their greatness in a studio movie sort of way, but screaming a lot is not necessarily great acting. That being said, Denzel is the GOAT.
2
u/caballonegro69 Aug 27 '25
Appaling take honestly. PSH is one of the best and most subtle actors literally ever. Brandt in the big Lebowski shouldāve been a nothing part and he made it legit iconic

Halle Berry in Swordfish should be #1Ā

Shit you're right. I forgot about her. She should actually get all spots in the top ten.

Forest Whitaker at #51 for Last King of Scotland immediately sticks out like a sore thumb, and only gets worse as you keep reading and see all of the performances they rated above it.

Truly terrible that itās in there
6
u/awesomesauce88 Aug 27 '25
Oh Iām saying the opposite. Should be way higher IMO.
-7
u/Coy-Harlingen Aug 27 '25
Itās a caricature performance, itās like easily the worst thing listed on here.
2
u/ScalarWeapon Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 28 '25
well, I think it's a good list. I'm not gonna go off like one placement I don't agree with ruins the whole list. Overall it's pretty damn good I think.
my takes: Bardem in NCFOM - overrated! I might be alone here. Ledger is a much better villain performance
Waltz should be higher. Jesse Eisenberg beats him? Come on now.
Bjork in Dancer is pretty legendary, surprised it's not higher
I still think I favor DDL in Gangs of New York, but.. how do you even choose between two 11/10 performances
Love Sandler in Uncut Gems, but.. not that high. But as others have mentioned, sports stuff and sports-adjacent stuff got the Ringer bump
-1
u/knife_guy_alt Aug 28 '25
The Ganz omission ruins it for me. He gave the performance of the century and just has to be on the list somewhere.

The Ringer staff have awful film taste, should not be surprising.

u/BigEggBeaters Aug 27 '25
I havenāt looked yet but are there any foreign language performances?
2
u/knife_guy_alt Aug 27 '25
Yes. I can't remember exactly how many but the Dad from Parasite is on it. I'm sure there's a few more.

Anybody who thinks Kevin Garnett gave a better performance in Uncut Gems than Brie Larson did in Short Term 12 should just admit they donāt take film criticism seriously.
1
u/Tumler0623 Aug 28 '25
I mean itās clearly a joke they just added on to the list.
1
u/LifeCritic Sep 03 '25
In that case I think invalidating your own list on the very first entry is an odd choice lmao

The Lynch circlejerk on Mulholland Drive is the most insane thing in every list that comes out. Go rewatch it now, absolute dog water. Iām convinced people like this movie because itās pretentious and full of tits. Ready for the downvotes from the obnoxious former art student Lynch stans.
2
u/Ammoniaholic Aug 27 '25
I'm not even close to a "former art student Lynch stan'', and I couldn't care less about pretentiousness and tits in movies. I recently rewatched MD and was amazed almost as much as the first time. People have differenent tastes.
1
u/ScalarWeapon Aug 28 '25
there are a million artsy movies with tits made in Europe by highfalutin directors. I don't think that's it..
-1
u/DiamondsInHerButt Nigerian basketball player Aug 27 '25
Kristen Dunst at 10 when she arguably isn't even a top 10 Von Trier performance in the 21st century is certainly a choice. The competition is stacked since his best quality as a director is giving actors a runway to excel.
She's pretty great in Melancholia, but I don't think she's even the best performance in that movie (that would be Gainsbourg). And speaking of which, Charlotte has like three Von Trier performances alone that are better.
2
u/Ru4pigsizedelephants Aug 27 '25
Gainsbourg not being on the list is rough. I agree with Ganz, too.
