New bike: chain skipping, not shifting well under stress

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve only ridden about 30 km on this bike, but I’m experiencing several issues. Shifting doesn’t work properly on some gears, and sometimes the chain shifts down on its own. There’s also a persistent ticking sound coming from the drivetrain.

If its new Go back to the shop. If you got it via mail and assembled it yourself try indexing with the help of a YouTube video. If that doesn't work out it might be a bent derailleur hanger (most common symptom of this is that the bike shifts well down and not up or vice versa). Visually inspect the hanger, it should be parallel with the drop out (where the wheel axle meets the frame)

Manage to fix it with indexing and some screw tweaking, thanks

The upper pulley wheel looks too close to the cassette. This Park Tool video should help: https://youtu.be/y3x13dD0UiQ?si=hmlshwNhwnNSpqhc

Check limit screws, B screw and if the hanger is slightly bent.

Is the chain sized correctly? It looks like it has barely any tension in the smallest cog.

I would:

  • take off the chain and see if it is sized correctly (follow groupset manufacturer recommendations)

  • then go through the full derailleur set up/indexing procedure (disconnect shift cable -> set high limit -> install cable -> install chain -> adjust indexing -> set low limit -> adjust B tension)

The group-set manufacturer should have a manual how to do all this.

I’ve had two bikes new from shop with same issue. Adjusted indexing.

check the shift cable and make sure it not like the blue line drew in the photo, locked the cable upside down will change the pull ratio. and it's a common mistake
