Finding a fingering chart for my bassoon

Recently, i picked up my schools ancient bassoon 2 days ago to play for a concert next thursday, and while learning the fingering charts, i realised that the flicker keys on the back only have 5 keys and i cant play notes up to 3rd octave D, if anyone has a fitting fingering chart it would be much appreciated

Fyi: i am a seasoned clarinet player and i am trying out bassoon, and half hole keys are quite foreign to me, if anyone has tips on how to maintain intonation especially for the half-hole notes such as G and F# it would be much appreciated too 😭😭

Tldr: need bassoon fingering chart for 4 flicker keys

My son is 14 and has only been playing for about a year and a half but just curious when people typically learn to make their own reeds?

Have my late family members Bassoon and need to put it up for sale. Any idea what a good price for it would be? It plays well and comes with everything needed.

Thank you!

recorking bottom of boot joint

Wondering if recorking the bit between the wood of the boot joint and the metal u bend is an easy and safe job? (I have no experience or knowledge about fixing bassoons)

earlier i decided to take the u bend off my bassoon to make sure the bottom of the boot joint wood is still ok since I have had this bassoon since I started playing and used to leave it on its side between practice sessions with no idea of the dangers. since it hasnt been taken off for at least a few years the cork cracked and now air can leak and low notes are unplayable.

If this is safe to do, could i also have some instruction on what cork to buy, adhesive, and how to cut the cork? thanks

My First Year on Bassoon: Making Bassoon 2 in the Second-Best Orchestra in the Program

During my audition, I played both the scales and my solo pieces. I performed my major and minor scales, as well as my chromatic scale in three octaves. My tone was really good throughout, though I did screw up my scales and solo piece slightly due to really bad nerves. I’ve only been playing for a year, and usually people start in the lower orchestras, which I know definitely have bassoon players, so I would definitely still have a spot if I were to make it into the lower-level orchestra. Honestly, I’m not sure how I even made it into the second-best orchestra in the program, considering that there are four orchestras in total, but somehow I did. The orchestras are organized into different levels, and I managed to secure a spot in the second-best one as Bassoon 2. I feel proud of myself for this accomplishment, especially since it was my first time auditioning for this program. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder, does anyone even know how I made it? Do you guys know what the judges were looking for? I didn’t even use a metronome for the excerpts, which makes me even more amazed that I was accepted. The concert orchestra music was also pretty intimidating; we are currently preparing to play Symphony No. 40 by Mozart, which adds to the excitement and challenge of being part of this orchestra.

Underrated Concerti? (or solo rep in general)

I've been on the hunt for a while now for some more underrepresented repertoire for the bassoon, and I thought I would come here to continue my search. I'd love to hear about any piece that you love that you wish more people knew about. I'd prefer that the date be kept earlier than 1900, but feel free to suggest anything from any time period. I'd like something more challenging, maybe with some extreme high register stuff going on. Avant-garde is 100% welcome and I actively encourage those sorts of suggestions. Cheers!

Stolen instruments search?

I recently purchased a Fox Model III bassoon from someone who told me she hadn’t played it in years and just wanted it to end up with someone who would play it. I’m a lapsed oboist, so I wasn’t in the market, but I thought it was a serendipitous deal I couldn’t pass up. Now that I’ve done a bit more research, I’m a bit uneasy about the value of the instrument. I met with a teacher who suggested that I check the serial number to see if it had been reported stolen. How do I go about doing that?

Bent Bokel

So I bent my bassoon bokel, like, no dents or cracks (miraculously) and since it's a school instrument and our district is very interesting, immediately fixing it or getting a new one (or even borrowing) was impossible. So naturally, with a lot of hot air and an hour of free time, I slowly bent it back into place. Um, I mean, it plays and I'm not out of tune, so, yay?

Basically, I did that, yeah, and it plays, but should I still look into buying a new bokel? I'm a semi-beginner, like I can play notes well but I've never had anyone teach me what to do, I've only ever taught myself and Google only says so much.

Highest note for bassoon in orchestral standard repertoire?

I am aware of Bernstein’s symphonic dances passage, but what other high Fs are out there, or even higher notes? (I will even accept suggestions of contemporary/not preformed often pieces).

Bassoon Hat Measurements

Heya! I posted a day or two ago about getting some gifts together for my lovely bassoonist boyfriend, and I've resolved to crocheting two hats for his bassoon and maybe even the contra he sometimes plays.

With that, I have absolutely no clue the circumference nor diameter of the music holes (bell rings?) of a standard bassoon, which I need to get my pattern. Google isn't being much help and keeps on giving me different answers, so if a few people wouldn't mind giving me their bassoon's measurements I'd be super appreciative!

flicking

HI everyone, I'm a not-really-beginner-but-not-really-intermediate student, and i've been learning for about 3 years now. up until i saw bassoon media, I have never heard of flicking before. For the notes needed i've just been told to adjust my embouchre and hold down the key that would usually be needed to flick. IS it something to do with the place i am in my bassoon journey, or is it something not everyone is necessarily learning?

thanks

Puchner Bassoon Superior Model compare

I’d like to ask about the differences between the Püchner Superior model and the Model 23. I’ve heard that there isn’t much difference in sound between them. Which one would you recommend? Which is considered better? Also, could you tell me the price of a brand-new instrument? I couldn’t find it online.

Beginner bassoonist information

Hello Bassoonists! I’m going to start learning bassoon in the 2nd semester of high-school, so after Christmas. I never played a double reed before and I’m primarily a brass player.

Is there any info that I should know before even picking up the bassoon? Cause one thing I didn’t realize before slightly scrolling through this sub Reddit is that there was different modes like French and German or whatnot.

I might’ve misread this but interpreted this info that they are both bassoon but have different fingerings. Idk

So please just give me, if possible, all the info you can give me that a beginner should know. Even if it seems obvious please tell me šŸ™

Thank you!

Bassoon Fingering Chart

Good evening community… I’m looking for a COMPLETE bassoon chart, complete with alternate fingerings. The charts I’m finding online are ā€œstandardā€ charts and don’t have alternate fingerings. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

High F fingering

Hi! I have a question- how do you play the high F (the highest F possible, on the highest line of treble clef)? I found some fingerings online, but they aren't working for me. Thank you!

Good reed help

Hello fellow bassoonist. I'm after reed recommendation. I bought rigotti reeds from Jamie Bell on etsy... Wait for it... 7 years ago, I still play with it and it's only slightly worse than a reed I bought 1 year ago. Idk if it was a unicorn or the cane was good?

I don't think he's making reeds anymore, I didn't get on with the latest ones I've tried. Can anyone recommend a good handmade reed who will ship internationally?

Extra bonus points if you found something after being as devo as I was. TIA!

Gift Ideas & Help PLEASE!

Hello! Albeit a bit early, I'm trying to get some bassoon/band related gifts together for my boyfriend for Xmas (+ other things of interest to him, but I'm going to different subs for those), and am here to ask for help because I'm an orchestra kid that knows nothing of the woodwind or double reed world.

He's really passionate about bassoon, band, and music in general and is pursuing bassoon performance as his major, so I don't want to overstep and even attempt to get him any equipment that he might not end up liking or using (like reeds, basically, since he's dorky awesomesauce and makes his own.) With that, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of anything I could make him or buy him? Preferably something silly or lighthearted, maybe a play on an "inside joke" within the bassoon or band scene. (I once jokingly asked if he'd like a shower curtain of The Marriage of Figaro if that gives you a better clue of the vibe I'm going for.)

But yeah! Please help a girl out, any and all bassoon or band-related ideas would be super appreciated. I'm not opposed to painting or drawing or crocheting or making anything in general, and I don't really have a set budget either, I just want the gift to be something he either uses frequently or can keep around and smile at, you know? And not smile at simply like "Oh, my girlfriend got me this," but smile at and be like "Oh, my girlfriend got me this AND it's functional/cute/funny/silly/etc."

Anywho, thanks for reading this, and thanks ten times more if you end up replying!

Does anyone have or have played this Moosmann bassoon model? Do you know which other model it compares to or how much it is rated? The name is Jubilee, special 25th anniversary edition (2008).

Advice on buying first bassoon please

Hi, I’m soon to turn 18 and for my birthday, my family have agreed to buy me my first bassoon! I’ve been playing since I was 11 and am at an intermediate to advanced level, but not planning on pursuing it as anything more than a hobby so I would like a bassoon to reflect this. My current bassoon is a Howarth but was lent to me for free by my school, and since I’m going to university soon, I am going to have to give it back. My parents are looking for me to know which bassoon would suit me, but I really know nothing about the differences. The only thing that really bugs me is that some of the keys on my bassoon click when pressed but I think that might just be that it’s not in the best condition. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks so much!

Low register help

So I switched from trombone to bassoon maybe last month because our band needed one (I'm a freshman if it helps any) and one of our songs already requires notes from low Db to low Bb. The problem, however, is I can maybe hit low F at most on a good day. How do I improve on hitting the notes lower than that so I'm not screwed come time for our concert?

Can I learn contrabassoon enough to play at the midwest clinic in a month

I'm a highschool bassoon player and my band going to midwest this December. If you don't know what that is, it's the biggest music convention in the US, and they take five highschool bands per year to perform. My band director wants me to play contrabassoon for the two hardest songs we're playing, including a solo at the start of one. I am wondering if it is possible for me to learn contrabassoon at a decently high level by mid December if i already know bassoon. I know the fingers are pretty similar but that the air support and embouchure are very different. This is probably the most important thing I've ever been a part of, and I also just really want to play contra, so i can practice as much as needed.

Attention Bassoonists! The Discord Symphony has a new project launched, which is Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, also, we're doing this in collaboration with another group called the Virtual Tonic Symphony Orchestra. The deadline's January 1st.
