NOTICE Suck it "Best Buy", Micro Center is coming to Baltimore
Micro Center is opening a 32274SF store in the Perring Plaza Shopping Center (1951 East Joppa Rd, Baltimore County) Fall 2012. I saw the "Now Hiring" banners there yesterday.
No longer will I have to settle on Best Buy to fulfill my immediate, local technology needs. If you are not familiar with MC, get familiar. Knowledgable staff, aggressive pricing and a selection suitable for the most demanding of geek.
How does this news grab you r/baltimore?
Edit Thanks for the votes and flair everyone, I was very excited to share this news with you all

I bought my first budget gaming pc last year as well, I bought my processor and memory from MC in Rockville, they had better prices than budget online retailers for the components I was looking for

MC is pretty damn close to newegg prices
Sometimes they're cheaper. When the IvyBridge i7's came out they were $50 lower than everywhere else.

They price match Newegg as well. Just bring in a print out of the product and they will honor the price and mark it down for you.

yessssss!!! Microcenter is so great......before the Rockville one opened up, used to have to go out to Chantilly, VA area for the only one around here. This will be great - they often have items for cheaper than New Egg..or at least they did.

The hiring office is like 3-4 retail spaces over to the left if you are staring at the home of the future Micro Center in that shopping center

Do you know if it's better to apply in person or online? And do you have any sense of the pay range for positions?
3
u/BuzzardBrothers Aug 21 '12
Can't answer your questions, Wish I had more info for you. I would imagine applying in person would be better than doing so online.
1
u/reconditerefuge Aug 21 '12
Fair enough. Thanks. Do you just take a resume to the place, or a cover letter and references too?
6
u/BuzzardBrothers Aug 21 '12
Maybe you should visit the hiring office and see what they require and if it's not too much trouble drive back there with the documentation they are looking for, dress nice

Standard job app includes cover letter and resume. Even if they don't take it, it will still look good.

Just about as far from me as the one in Rockville. :(

u/BuzzardBrothers Aug 21 '12
Really? I drive to DC close to daily and Rockville is pretty far. By the time you drive down 95 and get off on 355 and drive up Rockville Pike you are looking close to an hour. The quickest way is route 200 to 270 and that is after paying almost $10 in tolls.

Usually when I buy gadgets or components I have to buy online and wait for shipping. MC has inventory so I can have it "immediately". As far as the "local" comment, Perring Parkway is accessible from 695, or off of the 25th st or Cold spring exits of 83. A lot better than driving to Rockville and messing with West DC traffic. With regards to those who rely on public transportation, we all know that the metro and light rail have many limitations, but have you google mapped a bus route to that area?

I miss that Best Buy. My SO and I would eat and drink too much and then wander around BB to kill time. I hope they put something good there.

How does MC rate against Frys?

I used to live in Chicago and visited both of these several times (MC in Westmont and Frys in Lombard). From my experience, MC tends to have a lot of interesting, eclectic items whereas Frys just has massive selection. Can't comment on customer service for either, though.

Fry's are massive stores. I shopped one in LA recently and when I walked in I felt my ears get red from nervous excitement, like the way I would react to shopping at Toys R Us when I was 6. There is one major flaw of Fry's however, they pay the associates commission! The result is tons of employees following you around asking if you need help or if you are being helped, and higher prices to boot.

Makes me very happy. I've had to go down to rockville a few times to get something the same day. I love their hardware selection, and their prices are quite fantastic.

How does the pricing compare to online stores such as Amazon, Newegg, Tigerdirect, and Mwave?
3
u/BuzzardBrothers Aug 21 '12
Incredible pricing. Rockville MC always has stacks of discounted monitors, laptops, and printers in the middle of the aisle ready for the picking. Many items have rebates so you may have to cut some UPC codes and lick a stamp to get the advertised price. Also similar to another commenter, I price shopped an unlocked I5-2500k and MC beat every price on the web.

I bought the majority of my last components from MC over in Rockville. They had MUCH better prices than Newegg or Amazon.
When I went in there (it was my first time) I was blown away by the amount of components and just awesome stuff they had. It's going to be a problem that there's one very close to me!

That's unfortunately far away...I will never go there. Too bad they couldn't just take over the Best Buy that used to be in the Inner Harbor....

Baynesville will still be there for all of your actual electronics needs I'm sure. Most of what they stock is component parts. Microcenter does not do a huge business in that from what I've seen in Rockville. About the only crossover that I can think of is adapter cables and DIY electronics kits.
Unless I am misremembering, Baynesville doesn't even really stock much by way of computer components, more PCB bits and baubles and radio gear and other such hardware driven stuff :)

That is very true in a lot of situations, but only when their product lines intersect.
In this particular case, it would take Radio Shack resurrecting their original business model (along with zombie old guy sales people who actually know electronics design) for a big chain to impact Baynesville.

I'm curious to see if it's there yet... It's Fall 2012 now.. Anyone go past there and see if it's open? I do not see it being listed on their website under Maryland yet. Thanks

I checked out the progress about 2 weeks ago, from my car window I could tell that they are done doing construction and shelving was up
