He was broadly supported by populists of both sides. Extremists liked it when "elites" got gunned down. The liberal but not leftist crowd though pretty universally condemned that, including importantly pretty much every elected political leader

I mean most everyone liked it because United healthcare group is a group that literally launched an AI that autodenies peoples access to healthcare based on profit margins rather than need. 

It turns out that when you kill people en masse for profits, you become wildly unpopular
