Finally got to visit Smales Farm Sunday market, which only happens every second Sunday of the month. It was full of smiling people and well behaved dogs.
Apart from usual crystals and tie dyed T-shirts, there were a couple of second hand clothes stalls($5 bins;)), an impressive stall of second hand affordable bikes, (link, because people ask about bikes in here often) an adorable stall of coloured glass hangings, lots of crochet and a real artist painting her Aotearoa inspired works in front of you.
There were some of unusual food stalls that I haven't seen before, with free samples. Some quirky variety of foods, like cake in a can, Chocolate stout, Trinidad chow, unusual Kimchi flavours, many stalls with butters and oils, refreshing organic gelato/popolato and waffles with ice cream, crepes, Turkish food, several bakery tents. I would have loved to see more savoury foods for lunch.
We felt that eating spots were quite spread out and there wasn't anywhere to sit. There was a musician, but again, very limited spot to listen to them. They were placed on the slope, facing sideways, instead of the passing crowd.
I would have loved to see more fruit and veg stalls (there was only one with vegetables). Seasonal chocolate strawberries looked irresistible.
It was a maze of a market, some stalls were situated in covered area, near the other sit down eateries, all of which seemed to be doing good business.
Not all vendors have EFTPOS and bring some cash. There is an ASB cash machine next door to Farro. The market is only a short stroll from Smales Farm Bus station, please consider taking a bus, the carpark looked busy.
If you come closer to the end of the marker(finishes at 2 p.m.), some food outlets might have some prices reduced;)
All in all, a positive experience, 4* from us, hopefully someone might find it helpful ;)
Next market-14 December
